Kassen et al, I'm comfortable with neural nets, I like the feedforward type with backprop because that's the old standby of neural nets, works great as a pattern recognizer. I trained some ChucKian little-bitty neural nets to do some music processing and they seemed to work OK, though in my implementations they might have learned the "null pattern" of becoming a pass-thru netowrk. I'd enjoy having native neural net capability so I can do more work with more neurons as implementing them in the signal chain is expensive. Maybe one day ChucK will run on multiple processors and we could dedicate some of those processors to neural net processing. Les Hi Nuno, This would be a great application for our new SMIRK toolkit (small music information retrieval toolkit for MIR in ChucK), soon to be up at http://smirk.cs.princeton.edu. This is a great example of a problem that could be easily solved with a machine learning algorithm, wherein you 1) Extract features from a training set of animal sounds 2) Use them to train a classifier (now available in chuck: kNN, adaboost) 3) extract features from the mic input 4) use the trained classifier to classify the new inputs You could start with playing with FFT, centroid, RMS, rolloff, and other standard features, then use whatever features end up capturing your idea of similarity the best. I'm learning some Python now and I really like it. Is there a reason why is ChucK is so strongly typed? Another feature that I'd like to see is score timing that supports tempo changes. With the basic timing scheme things go easily out of sync if you change the tempo on the fly. So I'm asking for global tempo control, score duration ( sdur ), score time ( stime ) and score now ( snow ). The type sdur would measure beats in quarternote durations. The type stime is an absolute measure of score duration. snow holds the current score time measured in quarternote beats. So calling: 12::whole => snow; would advance score time by 12 whole notes and take tempo changes that other shreds might make in to account. I know this might unnecessarily complicate ChucK and similar score timing scheme can already be made in ChucK as it is (using floats instead of sdurs). Simulating environmental audio

I have a research project for which I need a variety of environmental audio streams, but for a number of reasons, I want to use purely synthesized sounds rather than just using pre-recorded tracks and sample-based simulation. I'm wondering if anybody in the ChucK community has any convincing environmental patches that they'd be willing to share. Almost any environments will do, so long as they're evocative of a place. Wind, rain, leaves in the trees, crickets chirping, waterfalls, waves on a beach - those are all fairly obvious examples of natural environments. I'm also interested in urban settings as well: traffic, stadium crowds, murmuring theater audiences, applause, industrial machinery... In addition to complete environments, good simulated sound effects that can be used as elements in an environment would also be useful: a car horn, closing door, breaking glass. I'm hoping that such synthetic effects will have parameters that can be adjusted to modify the character of the synthesized signal. For example, I have a "footsteps in the hallway" patch I've been playing with that can be adjusted to sound like footsteps in gravel or footsteps in grass, on sand, etc. (Mine isn't very good yet, so if you happen to have a good footsteps simulation, I'd love to compare yours with mine.) There are lots of environmental sounds that I haven't even mentioned, too, so if you have something you'd be willing to share, I'd love to hear from you. I like alias-noise and 8bit

Hi I'd like to resample a 44100 signal to something like 10K *and* hear the alias noise. Also I'd like to resample to lower bitdepth, something like 8 or 6 bit. 1) How it that most efficiently done with chuck? 2) I event thought it might be possible for me to implement this as a real UGen. My plan would be to start from one of the simple UGens (gain), and expand/modify from there, but before even looking into the chuck source, is there any documentation about doing this? Should I expect this to be more effective in implenenting in chuck-code, and if so about how much?
