I knocked together a quick sonic experiment in Chuck last night that uses the Fibonacci sequence and φ to determine each note's pitch, duration, and vibrato settings. I haven't done much with Chuck in quite a while but was highly pleased how easily the experiment converged (about 15 minutes all told). SL2OSC

Hi, My friend woody and I have just got this cool OSC server working. It receives messages from the 3D VR world of Second Life and sends them to another computer's OSC receiver. The purpose of this is to provide a means of 3D VR GUI control of ChucK, pd, and well anything that will work that way. This has the potential to form a bridge between the music software community and the Second Life community, to the benefit of both groups. So we can get it to work with pd but not with ChucK. I basically read, understood, and copied the example snippets from the manual where it talks about OSC in the beginning of it. I also tested that things worked using localhost. So the receiver should receive across the web as well, right? Or does the listen() need a parameter? Anyway, ChucK blocks the port so even pd won't work, but when I quit ChucK pd works (with a restart). So somehow I think ChucK or rather the ChucK program that I wrote, is clogging up the port and listening only on localhost. This should be an easy fix, what is it? Thanks in advance, Les

WvOut and Bit depth

Hi, How does one set the bit depth for this ugen? I want to record a 32bit float wav file. In the documentation the only methods are to set the file type and close the file after the recording. Are there any other methods that aren't documented, or there extra arguments I can use in the .wavFilename method? many thanks

Very cool. I'll have to give that a try. Speaking of interoperability, what's the best way to talk to ChucK from Processing (on OS X)? Calling out to the command line? Have Processing send out MIDI notes, and ChucK listening for them? Or has anyone written a Processing library that either wraps ChucK or provides an interface? Those are some great FFT resources, Rebecca - thanks for sharing! I also wholeheartedly second the recommendation for the DSP Primer book. In addition, I have linked the following FFT overviews to people who are intimidated by articles that lean towards the more academic end of the spectrum: 1. this was just wrong, though perhaps some will get amusement out of it. the first message subject i heard about the new chuck msp max object or what ever that is, i heard the words new chuck and got all excited, thinking that the new version of chuck had been released. i was planning a pizza celebration for me and a few close friends just on hearing those first two words. then the subject continued and i heard about the object for that other program and realized it wasn't new chuck at all. so much for the pizza party, having that now would get me all depressed because it didn't have any reason to happen any longer.

new [chuck~] max/msp object

(Most of you on this list already know what ChucK can do, but here is my generic announcement for those interested) Everyone -- Version 1.6 (Max5) of the [chuck~] Max/MSP object is available for free download: http://music.columbia.edu/~brad/chuck~/ for Macintosh OS X (10.5/6). The new [chuck~] object is up-to-date with the latest (v 1.2.1.3) release of the ChucK language, including the LiSa live-sampling unit generators and the unit-analysis generators in the 1.2.1.3 package. [chuck~] imbeds the ChucK music-programming language in Max/MSP, bringing a sophisticated set of synthesis and signal-processing tools into the Max/MSP environment. [chuck~] also features an advanced timing and scheduling system in addition to a functional-style programming interface for algorithmic operations. Removing room reverb - any algorithms or chuck programs to do this?

Is this even possible? I know very little about DSP. I was talking to a former Lexicon employee and he said they were looking into building hardware to do this, but the projects seems to have suffered an untimely death. -- Rich
