Yo All....I'm trying to download and study some of the best music out there which features granular synthesis. I haven't heard much yet beyond Iannis Xenakis, but I'd love to know what your favorites are. Perhaps it would be worthwhile putting up a torrent of the same. If possible, kindly provide links to mp3 files or any other type of free downloads. embedding ChucK, and Windows8, ARM, etc.

I am using ChucK on an x86 based Windows8 large multitouch screen; as nothing more than a way to create a multi-voice OSC synth that I can describe to users how to install (at minimal cost) and get setup (with little expertise on their part). But Windows store apps (ARM, sandboxed - like on iOS), forces generally conspire to have you try to embed everything into a monolithic process. So: 1) The GPL licensing (SuperCollider as well as ChucK) seems to be an issue for anyone trying to host ChucK embedded into a controller process. Is this an actual problem, given that we are generally just linking in unmodified build of the sources? 2) What is going on with the future of ChucK? After tinkering around with the options for making an OSC synth to match my controller: 1) visual spaghetti code (Pd), 2) An ugly language in wide use (SuperCollider) 3) Hard (CSound) 4) Nice but not well known (ChucK). 3) Performance. I saw Ge Wang say that performance isn't a priority for ChucK, but have no idea what the practical implications are. Will there be (and do there need to be) target specific optimizations to take advantage of SIMD, and other ways of meeting performance goals, especially in the more constrained ARM environments? I haven't tried to do an ARM build of ChucK and get it installed onto Surface, but I read that you can't in general freely communicate between processes on localhost for store apps anyway (ie: OSC over UDP localhost); so that leads back to the problem hosting ChucK as an embedded library. -- http://www.youtube.com/rrr00bb http://rfieldin.appspot.com http://rrr00bb.blogspot.com

Musical Metacreation Weekend (MUME-WE-2013) - Call for Participation ======================================================= Musical Metacreation Weekend (MUME-WE-2013) Sydney Design Lab, University of Sydney June 14th-16th 2013 http://www.metacreation.net/mumewe2013/ ======================================================= Musical Metacreation is a forum for the emerging community of people making software that autonomously generates music. It engages with science, design, technology, philosophy, culture and aesthetics. Following the 1st International Workshop on Musical Metacreation of October 2012 (MUME 2012: http://www.metacreation.net/mume2012/), we are happy to announce MUME-WE-2013 in Sydney, a weekend of concerts, installations, panels, demos and other music listening. ======================================================= *** Call for Contributions and Participation *** Contributions are invited that fit the MuMe themes, in any of the following categories: music composition and performance systems, generative sound installations, audio-visual documentation. Contributors are not required to attend in person, as long as their work can be easily run in their absence. MuMe 2013 is music-only, with no paper track. * Themes * Musical Metacreation is concerned with autonomy and agency in software that makes music. A precise definition of how these terms apply to music remains itself an active area of enquiry, and individual projects can make their own case for how they address these aspects of behaviour. MuMe accepts submissions in the form of: • Systems that compose and/or interpret music • Systems that improvise with human musicians • Generative sound installations • Composition based on artificial life and artificial intelligence • Systems that engage in creative search or enhance the search process using advanced computing methods * Composition and Performance Systems * Music generating software that is designed to generate music all or in part by itself, either in the context of original music composition, or interactive improvised music performance. Three music events will be held, providing three different contexts. Instrumental musicians will invited on the basis of successful contributions. - algorave: an electronic dance music event consisting entirely of generative music in a club environment. - instrumental improvisation: a concert of free improvised music in which instrumental musicians are paired with algorithmic software systems to perform duets. - composed/conceptual: an electroacoustic concert for work involving computer-composed (realtime or offline) musical elements. * Generative Sound Installations * Continuously running generative installations, ranging from full artworks to high-quality demos. No budget is available for the setup of installations, but we can provide computers, speakers and projectors, as well as a number of spaces to present works. This includes a computer lab (Macintosh), allowing for the presentation of distributed works. * Audio-Visual Documentation of MuMe Systems * Recordings of music-generating systems with additional film content. Producers of algorithmically generated music are invited to submit fixed works in video format, for presentation in a “continuous listening room” at the event, but also later on the web. The work should take the following form: the audio should be a standalone, professionally produced stereo track of up to 15 minutes in length. The video should be an additional layer synched to the audio, strictly for the purpose of describing and explaining the work. This could be a slideshow, an informative visualisation of the music or a film with subtitles. The video should be treated strictly as an explanatory element for listeners to gain a detailed understanding of the system, and not as an artistic element, whereas the audio should be considered the opposite. Submission format: minimum requirements, HD 1920x1080 Quicktime Movie, with 44.1Khz, 16-bit stereo audio. * Panel Sessions * Panel sessions will be by invite from amongst participating artists. Please indicate if you would be interested in participating in a panel session. Non-attendees may join in over Skype. * No Paper Submissions * Although MuMe also exists as a conference workshop, the MuMe Weekend will not have a paper track. However, the MuMe weekend will be flanked by three conferences that will be highly relevant to participants (see below). Polyphony/Multiple Instruments in ChucK

Hello, In my experiments with ChucK I've reached the point of wanting to use multiple instruments in polyphony (two Moogs in this case). My example is on GitHub here<https://github.com/curtisullerich/computer-music/blob/d37a98cb4f7b237b1791b…> . My usage pattern feels awkward and not very clean, and I'm hoping someone else has encountered the same situation. My question: What is a good way to manage and use multiple instruments in ChucK? It seems like a simple thing to want to do, but I haven't found any examples in the doc that work this way. Am I completely backwards about how I want to accomplish polyphony? My particular use case is made most awkward because I'm using an ADSR envelope. I think it's mostly ChucK's style of time tracking/advancement that's derailing me. If I'm not describing this well enough, please let me know. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! Curtis

C function integration problem into a chugin

Hi all, I am currently trying to create a chugin with IBNIZ http://pelulamu.net/ibniz/ (it generate weird and loud sound, take care of your ears, headphones and speakers if you try it!!). My target is to only have sound from it. Ibniz source code is C, so I added the C file defining the functions I want to reuse inside the chugin make file: C_MODULES=vm_slow.c I call 3 of these functions inside the code generated by chuginate script: ibniz class defined in ibniz.cpp (chugin cpp source file) Compilation seems ok except 2 warnings: ~/Chuck/chugins/ibniz$ make clean; make linux rm -rf vm_slow.o ibniz.o ibniz.chug gcc -D__LINUX_ALSA__ -I../chuck/include/ -fPIC -O3 -c -o vm_slow.o vm_slow.c g++ -D__LINUX_ALSA__ -I../chuck/include/ -fPIC -O3 -c -o ibniz.o ibniz.cpp In file included from ibniz.h:12:0, from ibniz.cpp:15: vm.h:46:3: warning: anonymous type with no linkage used to declare variable '<anonymous struct> vm' with linkage [enabled by default] ibniz.cpp: In constructor 'ibniz::ibniz(double)': ibniz.cpp:45:24: warning: deprecated conversion from string constant to 'char*' [-Wwrite-strings] gcc -shared -lstdc++ -o ibniz.chug vm_slow.o ibniz.o Then I perform the: sudo make install And the problem occurs when I try to launch a test.ck file [test.ck]:line(1): undefined type 'ibniz'... I added verbose option 3 to check what goes wrong and I found that my ibniz.chug is not loaded cause of the following error: [chuck]:(3:SEVERE): | | error loading chugin 'ibniz.chug', skipping [chuck]:(3:SEVERE): | | error from chuck_dl: '/usr/lib/chuck/ibniz.chug: undefined symbol: _Z6vm_runv' vm_run() is one of the C functions I call in the chugin cpp file. So I suppose _Z6vm_runv is linked to it. As a test, I tried to remove all these C functions and the chugin is loading and running. So I think I made something wrong to integrate these functions correctly inside the chugin code. Any idea? What is chuck_dl? Thanks for your help. Ju

Dealing with String objects?

Hello chuckers I am looking for a reference to the 'string' object class in chuck. I am having a hard time trying to guess what methods are available for the class. I also recently came across with the StringTokenizer object but it seems to work only when the token is a white space. Is it possible to assign a different token to the object? here is what I am working on UGen uArray[3]; new SinOsc @=> uArray[0]; new TriOsc @=> uArray[1]; new PulseOsc @=> uArray[2]; for(0 => int i; i < 3; i++) { <<<getType(uArray[i].toString())>>>; now + 1::second => now; } What gets printed is the object's type plus what I believe is a reference to memory that I am currently not interested in, separated by a colon ( TriOsc:1001f36a0) Happy holidays! -- http://www.wolfganggil.com <http://www.wolfganggil.com/about>

Hello ChucKers, I got lost for several hours recently reading Sean Costello's The Halls of Valhalla blog http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2011/01/21/reverbs-diffusion-allpass-delay… I can't help but think that if I could figure out the notation of say Moorer's Figure 2.30 above to the point where I might translate into higher level ChucK delays, gains, and filters I could get lost for several hours making strange reverbs in Chuck instead. Can anyone help me get started? Thanks, michael
