Dear all, Question from a rank ChucK beginner There's something about envelopes or gain or shreduling that I don't understand. I created a Cartesian matrix of impulse generators, whose frequencies are given as mx+ny {x,y btw -3 and 3) where the gain & 'tempo' of each generator is correlated with its distance from a line segment (a1,b1 - a2,b2) - later on I will be manipulating x,y,a1,b1,a2, and b2. This code runs well for a while, but within a few seconds or minutes it starts to get overwhelmed. I'm not sure whether the following is relevant or not. Looking at the chuck source code (in ugen_stk.h), it appears the common superclass of BlitSaw and BlitSquare is BLT, not Blit. Would what you tried work if you used BLT for your common array instead of Blit? Bob H

This code works: SinOsc pls[0]; <<< "sinosc", pls.size() >>>; for (0 @=> int i; i < pls.size(); i++) { <<< i >>>; <<< pls[i].freq() >>>; } But this code fails: 2 => int siz; SinOsc pls[0]; siz => pls.size; <<< "sinosc", pls.size() >>>; for (0 @=> int i; i < pls.size(); i++) { <<< i >>>; <<< pls[i].freq() >>>; } It gives a run-time error: "[chuck](VM): NullPointerException: shred[id=1:untitled], PC=[53]" error. How do I dynamically resize an array of objects? (I just reinstalled miniAudicle today. running on Windows 7.) Thanks, George Locke

Not exactly sure why this is failing. Also tried declaring Blit osc[], but nope. Here's a fix for now, assigning all elements individually: BlitSquare pls[10]; BlitSaw saw[10]; Blit osc[10]; if (myVariable) { for (0 => int i; i < pls.cap(); i++) pls[i] => osc[i]; } else { for (0 => int i; i < pls.cap(); i++) saw[i] => osc[i]; } 1. how do I assign a Blit array with a BlitSquare array? Hello George, You have an interesting point there. I wanted to suggest to you that you wrap your BlitSaw in an extension of a Chubgraph class, but that also doesn't work! It appears to me that Chuck in general doesn't let you assign arrays from subclasses to superclasses: a bit of a surprise indeed! For example : class ClassA { float v; fun float value() { return v; } } class ClassB extends ClassA { fun float value() { return v * 2; } } ClassA myObjectA; ClassB myObjectB; //ChucK allows: myObjectB @=> myObjectA; //but does not for arrays :-( ClassA myObjectArrayA[10]; ClassB myObjectArrayB[10]; myObjectArrayB @=> myObjectArrayA; // gives error Of course there are less pretty ways of achieving what you need, probably by just switching the routing of the UGens : BlitSaw blitSaw[10]; BlitSquare blitSquare[10]; Gain output; // => or the rest of your patch for (int i;i<blitSaw.size();i++) { blitSquare[i] !=> output; blitSaw[i] => output; } for (int i;i<blitSaw.size();i++) { blitSaw[i] => output; blitSquare[i] => output; } Happy chucking! how do I assign a Blit array with a BlitSquare array?

Hi, I have a class that I want to use either (multiple) BlitSquare or BlitSaw oscillators, where i can switch between them during performance. I thought the easiest way would be to have a single Blit array that holds either, but apparently I can't do this: BlitSquare pls[10]; BlitSaw saw[10]; Blit osc[10]; if (choosePulse) { pls @=> osc; } else { saw @=> osc; } Any suggestions? How is the Blit type ever to be used if not in this way? (My chuck experience is limited, but I am an experienced programmer.) Regards, George
