Yo All....I'm trying to download and study some of the best music out there which features granular synthesis. I haven't heard much yet beyond Iannis Xenakis, but I'd love to know what your favorites are. Perhaps it would be worthwhile putting up a torrent of the same. If possible, kindly provide links to mp3 files or any other type of free downloads. Chunity (ChucK for Unity): Release!

Dear all, Hello! I'm happy to announce the initial official release of Chunity (ChucK for Unity)! http://chuck.stanford.edu/chunity/ http://u3d.as/1bvM Chunity is the integration of ChucK in Unity. (For those of you not familiar with the Unity game engine, Chunity gives you the ability to do realtime sound + music generation natively in Unity, tightly coupled to interactions with graphical objects.) You can use most (possibly all?) ChucK features, run new ChucK code on-the-fly at any time, and communicate between Unity and ChucK using "global" (new keyword!) ints, floats, strings, Events, and 1D int and float arrays. (More types to come!) You can even run multiple VMs that share the same strong timing! chuck hoarding the soundcard

Hi chuck-users, Not sure if this mailing list is still in use but I've signed up for the chuck course on kadenze and am having issues after installing chuck. I'm on Debian bullseye which is the current (as of April 2020) testing release. I've git clone'd the chuck repo and make'd and make install'd. I tried both `make linux-pulse` and `make linux-alsa`. My version of chuck is 1.4.0.1. I'm able to run ck files through `chuck` and hear output as expected, for example echo " SinOsc s => dac; 0.6 => s.gain; 220 => s.freq; 1::second => now; " | chuck /dev/fd/0 plays the expected sound and exits cleanly. However, if I'm watching a tutorial video on kadenze or youtube (in firefox if that matters), I get unexpected results when I run the above command. I see [chuck]: RtApiAlsa::getDeviceInfo: snd_pcm_open error for device (hw:0,0), Device or resource busy. Similarly if I run `speaker-test`--while this is running and making noise, `chuck` spits out the same resource busy error. However, if I run `speaker-test` and play a youtube video, it works as expected, the speaker-test noise and youtube noise mix and play at the same time. Interestingly, if I run `chuck` with nothing else and get the expected sound and soon after start `speaker-test`, `speaker-test` will wait / not start until `chuck` exists, suggesting that chuck somehow "hoards" the soundcard so that other sound-producing apps can't get access and mix-in. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? I believe (I'm not 100% sure as I'm not very familiar with sound hardware and software) I have both alsa and pulseaudio? This is why I tried make'ing with both. I'm not sure how they interact. Thanks and hope everyone is staying safe and home, Geoff

This is truly odd. I don’t have easy means to test it. I don’t know why it wouldbe broken dependent on the dac, however. For fun you might try something like this, just to verify that the valueAt() function is what’s busted. Using chuck linux-jack this gives me reasonable numbers between -1 and 1. Using chuck linux-alsa I'm able to play the file I've read into sndBuf; but trying to copy it via .valueAt gives absurdly high ["out of range"] numbers at each point. [It can be a different high number different times I run chuck, but the number it is turns up at every point I sample.] Is there a fix for this? Aside from using jack on a computer where it befnurgles the midi?

memory usage

Hi, I was trying to better understand how ChucK deals with memory management. I know there's no garbage collector in place and I also checked on the mailing list, where I found several really interesting conversations about this topic. But still, I've got this scenario where the memory in use keeps growing.: >From terminal I launch: chuck --loop then I run several times: chuck + gc_empty.ck every time I wait that this ends first. gc_empty.ck contains just 1 line: 1::second => now; at the same time I'm monitoring chuck using top (on MacOS High Sierra 10.13.1) and I get the following values for MEMORY: as soon as I launch ChucK: 9008K 1st time I run "gc_empty.ck": 9108K 2nd time I run "gc_empty.ck": 9112K 3rd time I run "gc_empty.ck": 9196K Why is ChucK using more and more memory? Sorry if this is maybe a silly question. Cheers, Mario

Oscillosope UI

Hi, Recently I've been poking around with Chugins and created a couple of things I thought were 'missing' in the official ChucK and Chugin repos, UGens like Wrap, Clip, Sample and Hold, etc. ( https://github.com/mariobuoninfante/ChucK_chugins), and I was thinking about adding an oscilloscope as well. Recently I also put together a clunky class that allows you to plot things using gnuplot, but it's an offline thing, then you need to use Std.system() (that means using --caution-to-the-wind), I mean it's not ideal to be honest, especially if you're looking for an oscilloscope. I was wondering, would a Chugin be the right thing to work on to create an oscilloscope? I never dealt with UIs before, so I could be saying something completely naive here, but I was thinking about having a Chugin you can connect UGens to then display their waveform. Then have methods that allow to change the oscilloscope settings (ie x-axis and y-axis resolution, etc.). Does anybody have any experience with this kind of things? Chugins with UIs?
