I believe one way would be to have the trigger to activate an ADSR release.

i.e.

if(trigger) {
   adsr.keyOff();
   releaseDur => now;
   chuck - 1;
}

Or have the fade out trigger a milli counter that subtracts a Gain object before removing the shred
