It was mentioned on a gamelan mailing list. The deep gong they say has a way to penetrate the performance. An interesting fact is that one traditionally play outdoors, where there is no reverb. Then the inharmonicity of the instruments do not shine through as much as in a room. So for indoor performances, one might lessen the inharmonicity when synthesized. Hans
