I don't use the mA at all, but I just built it (1.3.1. gidora) and ran your example and did not see this issue.
Did you maybe build mA against an older, crappier version of chuck?

Using formerly compiled ChucK -

$ chuck --version
chuck version: 1.3.1.3 (chimera)
   linux (jack) : 32-bit

I got as expected -

$ cat float-issue.ck
2.3 => float a;
<<<a>>>;
$ chuck float-issue.ck
2.300000 :(float)
