Re: [chuck-users] negative duration syntax and bug
Press Release: In a startling discovery made earlier today by musician and self-described ChucKist "Kassen", it was revealed that negative time actually exists. Long theorized by science fiction authors and audiences, the discovery has baffled modern scientists. When questioned, the mysterious "Kassen" was unavailable for comment because he had travelled back in time to enjoy last weekend's party one more time. It is, however, suggested by other ChucKists that the time reversal phenomenon exists only in the mind of ChucK and is in fact a bug. Presumably a bug that flies backward, but that, again, is pure speculation. In fact, the whole concept of negative time in a ChucKian universe may actually be a very carefully planned practical joke created by the ChucK Dev team in the future of the past which is actually now. This has been an up-to-the-minute report (so to speak). Les (Inventor)
Les,

I don't think it does.. but you can have negative durations and LiSa may end up with a negative duration indicating her .playPos(), which was what I was investigating. There isn't the slightest problem with negative durations. You can add them, you can subtract them, you just can't advance now by them but they may be useful in other contexts, for example to indicate a timing offset that may be in either direction. Shuffle might be expressed as such a offset. "Five hours ago we met" and "The movie will start in three minutes" are both fine sentences yet they refer to durations (as offsets to "now") in different directions, so I'd say we are fine with negative durations in natural language as well; "She was five minutes late" may be a even more clear example, with "late" expressing the sign. Sorry to be so factual at your (great) humorous post but I'm really tired right now, that would also explain why I haven't yet gotten back to you on your personal mails. Rest asured I'll be doing something with that material. Regular silliness will resume tomorrow. Yours, Kas. P.S: aren't bees and dragonfly's bugs that can fly backwards?
Guys, behave as adults. There's always more than one way to understand things, and we can or can't, be agree. Les: Also, there are more than a way of expressing things
Guys, behave as adults.
Lucas, I'll be the first to admit I can be quite immature (and cheerfully so!) but I really don't see what I may have done here that could be taken that in way. I also took Les's post to mean "this is a rather obscure and unusual area to find a bug in, why did you even try this?"... and I think he does have a point there and that what he wrote was quite funny. Maybe you read something in this that I missed entirely; If I accidentally wrote something immature or offensive I apologise and I assure you I wasn't at all offended (more like pleasantly surprised) by Les's joking post. After all; negative durations, while they can be practical, may well seem counter-intuitive in a funny way. If there is a problem here I'd appreciate it if you'd point it out to me. I assure you I meant no ill will and I'm sure neither did Les. Yours, Kas.
