Fellow ChucKists, I'd like to suggest we note ChucK's inability to run on 64 bit platforms on the download page. I feel this limitation is under-documented, particularly compared to the relative availability of 64 bit processors and OS's (especially Linux). This turns out to lead to confusion and disappointment; a single line on that page would save people the effort of downloading, compiling, troubleshooting and finally posting to the list or forum. There have -of course- been list topics on this limitation, as well as some effort to remidy it; most of us will be aware of that but this isn't clear to potential new users who aren't -yet- on this list. It's a very minor issue but IMHO it doesn't reflect well on us to not point this out. Yours, Kas.
Hi Kassen! This is a very good idea - I will update the release page this week! Thanks and rock on! Hi,
I am below a newbie in my use of ChucK so don't expect much from
me. I'm not a programmer, don't know much about C or ChucK itself.
However I can report that ChucK is running fine on my Gentoo 64-bit
system, but I got there in a special way. I built ChucK on my wife's
Gentoo 32-bit desktop and then simply copied the 32-bit executable
over to my 64-bit machine. It runs fine as far as I can tell. I've run
pretty much every demo file I can fine. No problems with any of them,
at least to a casual observer.
I am careful to keep all of our Gentoo machines more or less in
sync with the same libraries, C compilers, etc., and I keep 32-bit
emulation libraries on my 64-bit machine for numerous reasons so this
might just be luck but there isn't any problem so far running ChucK on
64-bit here.
Maybe a better statement would be that ChucK won't build on a
64-bit machine? I was unable to do that.
Cheers,
Mark

Greetings! We've updated the release page (under "Linux") to reflect that 64-bit support is not there yet. I hope this helps! http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/release/ Thanks! I'm certain this will cut back on unpleasant surprises and save some people a lot of time figuring out what they "did wrong". I Think this sort of clarity is important; the first few hours (installation, getting started...) are probably one of the hardest things about ChucKing and first impressions do count. People can and should jump into the deep end but I think we should at least try to make certain there are no big rocks right below the surface. Yours, Kas.
