hi and newbie problems executing chuck

Hi all chuckers. This is my first message on this list. I'm jesus gollonet, a web designer and interactive developer living in barcelona. I've been following toplap's movements for the last four or five months and now am really interested in getting into chuck, but... I've downloaded the exe (for windows) and extracted it but it doesn't seem to work. When i double click it, an ms-dos windows appears just for an instant, and then nothing. At first i thought that i had to compile it using cygwin (i'm not much into compiling programs myself and don't find the intructions on the web really clear), but someone in a forum told me that the exe was all i needed, so... any idea of what's happening? I'm on a 2 ghz centrino, 1 gb RAM, dell inspiron laptop. Much of this could obviously be better written once the next version comes out, but what I have works fine for the most part. When running this on OS X, every time a new process is spoked, the audio cuts out for an instance. This has happened with versions 1.1.5.5 and 1.1.5.6. I'm afraid I haven't been able to test this on any other machines. Is this likely a problem with my machine's configuration? If so, how can I try to fix it? Is there something better I can be doing in my code to avoid this? returning values when sporking

I'm making a call along the lines of: spork ~ sporkFun(arguments) => int value; to a function: fun int sporkFun(arguments) {returs something in here} As I'm sure most of you know quite well, value doesn't get the return value from the function called by the spork, but rather the shred ID. That makes sense just fine and I can see lots of value in that. What I'm wondering is if there's a way for the child shred to return values to the parent, or as a wider question, for them to communicate in any way. I've figured out that global variables can be accessed both by parent and child, so I guess using those as flags is one way to go. Any other ideas? using emacs mode

I think it requires in .emacs the line (setq auto-mode-alist (append '(("\.ck$" . chuck-mode)) auto-mode-alist)), but i think maybe at least one other line as well. Is this very familiar to others? Also being new to os x and emacs as a .app, I'm not sure where to place the chuck.el file. Long Now Chimes.app

I've mentioned over on the ChucK wiki that I was working on an OS X application that used ChucK to ring peals of the Long Now Chimes. I've got a simple first-cut version up at http://ibiblio.org/emusic-l/LNC.dmg.gz for anyone who's interested. The project was done in AppleScript Studio, letting me have Cocoa user-interface widget without having to write the support code in C, and the audio is all synthesized in ChucK, to avoid having to learn the AudioUnit stuff. The interface is currently a little rought, but it makes pretty noises, and I like it. Hope you guys enjoy it, and thanks for Chuck! (Of course, the program gets much more sophisticated when we've got arrays; I could probably port all of the peal generation code direct to ChucK at that point. Note that I am *not* rushing anybody - it works great now.) Long term, I'm planning on making it more customizable by being able to write ChucK-based plugins to make different sounds, etc., and to have a nice way of entering dates other than typing them in. --- Joe M.

Dear All, Today is April 1st (since it's noon here, that should still be true for just about everyone), so technically, we are already late on our release 'date' of March. Our apologies. We are still in the testing/bug fixing/packaging stage of chuck-1.2.0.0, and hope to release something reasonable by this weekend. A quick status report - arrays are implemented and tested, objects are mostly implemented/tested. The only minimally essential 'showstopper' component we must complete is the bare-bone object importer. We are working around the clock to make this release as soon as possible. Stay tuned. Thanks!
