In this talk, I will discuss my research on understanding and advancing these models, centered around how they use the very large text corpora they are trained on. First, I will describe our efforts to understand how these models learn to perform new tasks after training, demonstrating that their so-called in context learning capabilities are almost entirely determined by what they learn from the training data. Next, I will introduce a new class of LMs—nonparametric LMs—that repurpose this training data as a data store from which they retrieve information for improved accuracy and updatability. I will describe my work on establishing the foundations of such models, including one of the first broadly used neural retrieval models and an approach that simplifies a traditional, two-stage pipeline into one. I will also discuss how nonparametric models open up new avenues for responsible data use, e.g., by segregating permissive and copyrighted text and using them differently. Finally, I will envision the next generation of LMs we should build, focusing on efficient scaling, improved factuality, and decentralization. Bio: Sewon Min is a Ph.D. candidate in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on language models (LMs): studying the science of LMs, and designing new model classes and learning methods that make LMs more performant and flexible. She also studies LMs in information-seeking, legal, and privacy contexts. She is a co-organizer of multiple tutorials and workshops, including most recently at ACL 2023 on Retrieval-based Language Models and Applications and upcoming at ICLR 2024 on Mathematical and Empirical Understanding of Foundation Models. She won a paper award at ACL 2023, received a J.P. Morgan Fellowship, and was named an EECS rising star in 2022. These advancements would not have been possible without the support of scalable and efficient infrastructure systems. In this talk, I will introduce several underlying systems I have designed and built to support the entire model lifecycle, from training to deployment to evaluation. First, I will present Alpa, a system for large-scale model-parallel training that automatically generates execution plans unifying data, operator, and pipeline parallelism. Next, I will discuss efficient deployment systems, covering the frontend programming interface and backend runtime optimizations for high-performance inference. Finally, I will complete the model lifecycle by presenting our model evaluation efforts, including the crowdsourced live benchmark platform, Chatbot Arena, and the automatic evaluation pipeline, LLM-as-a-Judge. These projects have collectively laid a solid foundation for large language model systems, being widely adopted by leading LLM developers and companies. I will conclude by outlining some future directions of machine learning systems, such as co-optimizing across the full stack for building AI-centric applications. Bio: Lianmin Zheng is a Ph.D. student in the EECS department at UC Berkeley, advised by Ion Stoica and Joseph E. Gonzalez. His research interests include machine learning systems, large language models, compilers, and distributed systems. He builds full-stack, scalable, and efficient systems to advance the development of AI. He co-founded LMSYS.org, where he leads impactful open-source large language model projects such as Vicuna and Chatbot Arena, which have received millions of downloads and served millions of users. He also co-organized the Big Model Tutorial at ICML 2022. He has received a Meta Ph.D. Fellowship, an IEEE Micro Best Paper Award, and an a16z open-source AI grant. In this talk, I will present two systems that can withstand component compromise. I will describe (1) a single sign-on system that protects user security and privacy from a compromised single sign-on server, and (2) a secure-hardware-based backup service that protects user backups from compromised secure hardware devices. These systems provide strong security and privacy properties while taking into account practical constraints such as compatibility requirements, hardware limitations, and user expectations. Each splits user secrets across different system components, using new cryptographic tools to provide necessary functionality while protecting user data. Bio: Emma Dauterman is a Ph.D. candidate at UC Berkeley where she is advised by Raluca Ada Popa and Ion Stoica. Her research interests include computer security, systems, and applied cryptography. She has received the Microsoft Research Ada Lovelace fellowship, the NSF graduate research fellowship, and a UC Berkeley EECS excellence award.

DeCenter Seminar: Accountability in Central Bank Digital Currency March 6, 2024 12:30 pm Friend Center, Convocation Room Speaker: Giulia Fanti, Carnegie Mellon University Abstract: Today, over 110 central banks worldwide are actively exploring the deployment of a centrally-banked digital currency (CBDC). A (retail) CBDC is central bank money that is (a) digital in nature, and (b) widely accessible to the public. Some of the proposed benefits of CBDCs include greater flexibility in implementing monetary policy, improved financial inclusion, and more efficient money transfers at lower fees. However, in parallel with the momentum surrounding CBDCs is a growing fear that CBDCs will significantly increase the attack surface for the financial system at large. In this talk, we will explore how to provide accountability for CBDCs. In other words, instead of preventing malicious activity outright, we want to design protocols that are rich enough to provably attribute malicious behavior to the faulty party. An essential question is how to provide accountability without compromising the efficiency of the system. We will discuss challenges and proposed solutions to the accountability problem at the consensus layer, the payment verification layer, and at the interface with end users. Notably, each of these problems is challenging in part because of partial decentralization that arises naturally in certain CBDC designs, despite their ostensibly centralized nature. Bio : Giulia Fanti is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests span the security, privacy, and efficiency of distributed systems. She is a two-time fellow of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Cybersecurity and a member of NIST’s Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board. Her work has been recognized with several awards, including best paper awards, a Sloan Fellowship, an Intel Rising Star Faculty Award, and an ACM SIGMETRICS Rising Star Award. She obtained her Ph.D. in EECS from U.C. Berkeley and her B.S. in ECE from Olin College of Engineering.

However, as a result of their generality, databases often achieve adequate performance for the average use case but do not achieve the best performance for any individual use case. In this talk, I will describe my work on designing databases that use machine learning and optimization techniques to automatically achieve performance much closer to the optimal for each individual use case. In particular, I will present my work on instance-optimized database storage layouts, in which the co-design of data structures and optimization policies improves query performance in analytic databases by orders of magnitude. I will highlight how these instance-optimized data layouts address various challenges posed by real-world database workloads and how I implemented and deployed them in production within Amazon Redshift, a widely-used commercial database system. Bio: Jialin Ding is an Applied Scientist at AWS. Before that, he received his PhD in computer science from MIT, advised by Tim Kraska. He works broadly on applying machine learning and optimization techniques to improve data management systems, with a focus on building databases that automatically self-optimize to achieve high performance for any specific application. There is also a clear generalization gap: whereas machines struggle with systematic generalization, children can excel. For instance, once a child learns how to "skip," they immediately know how to "skip twice" or "skip around the room with their hands up" due to their compositional skills. In this talk, I'll describe two case studies in addressing these gaps. 1) The data gap: We train deep neural networks from scratch (using DINO, CLIP, etc.), not on large-scale data from the web, but through the eyes and ears of a single child. Using head-mounted video recordings from a child as training data (<200 hours of video slices over 26 months), we show how deep neural networks can perform challenging visual tasks, acquire many word-referent mappings, generalize to novel visual referents, and achieve multi-modal alignment. Our results demonstrate how today's AI models are capable of learning key aspects of children's early knowledge from realistic input. 2) The generalization gap: Can neural networks capture human-like systematic generalization? We address a 35-year-old debate catalyzed by Fodor and Pylyshyn's classic article, which argued that standard neural networks are not viable models of the mind because they lack systematic compositionality -- the algebraic ability to understand and produce novel combinations from known components. We'll show how neural networks can achieve human-like systematic generalization when trained through meta-learning for compositionality (MLC), a new method for optimizing the compositional skills of neural networks through practice. With MLC, neural networks can match human performance and solve several machine learning benchmarks. Given these findings, we'll discuss the paths forward for building machines that learn, generalize, and interact in more human-like ways based on more natural input. Related articles: Vong, W. Howard Yen will present his MSE talk "Long-Context Language Modeling with Parallel Context Encoding" at 1pm on March 7th, 2024 in the 1st floor conference room of CSML (26 Prospect Ave). Advisor: Prof. Danqi Chen; Reader: Karthik Narasimhan Abstract: Extending large language models (LLMs) to process longer inputs is crucial for numerous applications. However, the considerable computational cost of transformers, coupled with limited generalization of positional encoding, restricts the size of their context window. We introduce Context Expansion with Parallel Encoding (CEPE), a framework that can be applied to any existing decoder-only LLMs to extend their context window. CEPE adopts a small encoder to process long inputs chunk by chunk and enables the frozen decoder to leverage additional contexts via cross-attention. CEPE is efficient, generalizable, and versatile: trained with 8K-token documents, CEPE extends the context window of LLAMA-2 to 128K tokens, offering 10x the throughput with only 1/6 of the memory. CEPE yields strong performance on language modeling and in-context learning. CEPE also excels in retrieval-augmented applications, while existing long-context models degenerate with retrieved contexts. We further introduce a CEPE variant that can extend the context window of instruction-tuned models with only unlabeled data, and showcase its effectiveness on LLAMA-2-CHAT, leading to a strong instruction-following model that can leverage very long context on downstream tasks. Standard design and construction practices are often wasteful, expensive, and exploitative, undermining a mission to create spaces of dignity, comfort, and delight. Within this context, this talk will present an alternative approach, focused on promoting design and construction methods that produce high-quality, low-carbon, and inexpensive outcomes, empowered by emerging advances in computational design and construction robotics. In addition to general methods, the talk will present a range of recent projects, including robotic planning and assembly of complex yet highly efficient truss structures, robotics-enabled fabrication of low-cost, low-carbon earthen and concrete structures, and algorithmic design and fabrication approaches for unconventional and circular material use. Bio: Caitlin Mueller is an Associate Professor at MIT's Department of Architecture and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in the Building Technology Program, where she leads the Digital Structures research group. She works at the creative interface of architecture, structural engineering, and computation, and focuses on new computational design and digital fabrication methods for innovative, high-performance buildings and structures that empower a more sustainable and equitable future. Mueller holds three degrees from MIT in Architecture, Computation, and Building Technology, and one from Stanford in Structural Engineering. Her research is funded by federal agencies and industry partners, including the National Science Foundation, FEMA, the MIT Tata Center, the Dar Group, Holcim, Robert McNeel & Associates, and Altair Engineering. Mueller has won best paper awards from the International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures, the Symposium on Geometry Processing, and the Journal of Mechanical Design, and was awarded the ACADIA Innovative Research Award of Excellence by the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture in 2021 and the Diversity Achievement Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture in 2022.

Speaker: John Jumper, DeepMind Date: Monday, September 25 Time: 4:30pm to 5:30pm Location: Friend Center 101 Host: Ellen Zhong Event page: [ https://www.cs.princeton.edu/events/26500 | https://www.cs.princeton.edu/events/26500 ] Title: Highly accurate protein structure prediction with deep learning Abstract: Our work on deep learning for biology, specifically the AlphaFold system, has demonstrated that neural networks are capable of highly accurate modeling of both protein structure and protein-protein interactions. In particular, the system shows a remarkable ability to extract chemical and evolutionary principles from experimental structural data. This computational tool has repeatedly shown the ability to not only predict accurate structures for novel sequences and novel folds but also to do unexpected tasks such as selecting stable protein designs or detecting protein disorder. In this lecture, I will discuss the context of this breakthrough in the machine learning principles, the diverse data and rigorous evaluation environment that enabled it to occur, and the many innovative ways in which the community is using these tools to do new types of science. I will also reflect on some surprising limitations -- insensitivity to mutations and the lack of context about the chemical environment of the proteins -- and how this may be traced back to the essential features of the training process. Finally, I will conclude with a discussion of some ideas on the future of machine learning in structure biology and how the experimental and computational communities can think about organizing their research and data to enable many more such breakthroughs in the future. Bio: John Jumper received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Chicago, where he developed machine learning methods to simulate protein dynamics. Prior to that, he worked at D.E. Shaw Research on molecular dynamics simulations of protein dynamics and supercooled liquids. He also holds an MPhil in Physics from the University of Cambridge and a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University. At DeepMind, John is leading the development of new methods to apply machine learning to protein biology.

Vincent Poor and Sanjeev Kulkarni Abstract: Computation and machine learning hold tremendous potential to improve the quality and capabilities of imaging methods used across science, medicine, engineering, and art. Despite their impressive performance on benchmark datasets, however, deep learning methods are known to behave unpredictably on some real-world data, which limits their trusted adoption in safety-critical domains. Accordingly, in this talk I will describe white-box, interpretable methods for photorealistic volumetric reconstruction that match or exceed the performance of black-box neural alternatives. I will also present recent theoretical results that guarantee correct and efficient reconstruction using our white-box approach in nonlinear computed tomography. Bio: Sara Fridovich-Keil is a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, where she works with Mert Pilanci and Gordon Wetzstein on foundations and applications of machine learning and signal processing in computational imaging. She is currently supported by an NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Sara received her PhD in electrical engineering and computer sciences in May 2023 from UC Berkeley, where she was advised by Ben Recht and supported by an NSF GRFP fellowship. Sara received her BSE in electrical engineering from Princeton University in 2018, where she was advised by Peter Ramadge and supported, in part, by a Barry Goldwater Scholarship.

The new approach applies techniques from online convex optimization and convex relaxations to obtain new methods with provable guarantees for classical settings in optimal and robust control. Time permitting we will discuss recent extensions to nonlinear adaptive control and iterative planning, as well as model free reinforcement learning. This theory was, and continues to be, developed here in Princeton with numerous collaborators, including Naman Agarwal, Brian Bullins, Karan Singh, Max Simchowitz, Xinyi Chen, Ani Majumdar, Sham Kakade, Udaya Ghai, Edgar Minasyan, Paula Gradu, and many others. Bio: Elad Hazan is a professor of computer science at Princeton University. His research focuses on the design and analysis of algorithms for basic problems in machine learning and optimization. Amongst his contributions are the co-invention of the AdaGrad algorithm for deep learning, and the first sublinear-time algorithms for convex optimization. He is the recipient of the Bell Labs prize, the IBM Goldberg best paper award twice, in 2012 and 2008, a European Research Council grant, a Marie Curie fellowship and twice the Google Research Award. He served on the steering committee of the Association for Computational Learning and has been program chair for COLT 2015. In 2017 he co-founded In8 inc. focusing on efficient optimization and control, acquired by Google in 2018. He is the co-founder and director of Google AI Princeton.
