Ed,
I think you're referring to the instructions posted here:

The person from Apple you spoke with was "kind of" right. Any time you type sudo in the terminal, you could potentially cause some serious damage. That said, if you copy the commands posted on that page exactly, you won't have any problems.

If you'd like to avoid this Terminal stuff all together, just install the miniAudicle - you'll be able to get started with ChucK and run ChucK programs:

http://audicle.cs.princeton.edu/mini/mac/

If you'd ever like to run your ChucK programs without having to run the miniAudicle, you'll have to install the chuck executable to /usr/bin/ as described in the instructions you saw.
