Hi again, I would like to intercept the output of iTunes on my eMac and send it into ChucK so I can use the Ambiophonic Processor that Howard Moscovitz of the forum wrote, then send that to the dac. Can I do this with a freeware package of some sort, and is it something to add to the feature request list of ChucK? It sure seems like the sort of thing that one should be able to do. Les

Have you tried JACK? http://www.jackosx.com/ Steve

Soundflower http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower will almost certainly let you do this. Looks just like another audio device, but lets you route things round to your heart's content. --- Joe M.

I didn't recommend soundflower because I didn't know that is free and open source.. that's pretty cool. Glad to see it. Steve

The only thing I know of is Virtual Audio Cable: http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.html But I guess it's not free. Rumours of JACK for Windows, but as far as I know, nothing has come of it.. http://jackaudio.org/node/13 Steve

You could install a linux vmware image and run jack (and chuck &c.) inside that vmware image from a windows host. http://vmware.com/products/player/ http://vmware.com/appliances/directory/1224 I have found the virtual sound card provided to the linux image to run reasonably well. As far as I know, you wouldn't be able to "mix" the linux audio and windows audio though. michael

EMU soundcards use a driver that includes a mixer that can route inputs to outputs. Both in and out may be real (as in jacks on your hardware) or virtual (to connect programs to). I think you are still stuck with one ASIO client max but I find it quite convenient. You route at will between normal Windows audio clients. Hardly a general purpose solution but it could be worthwhile to keep in mind when picking a card should you be in the market for one. Sadly open/free programs like ChucK can't use Rewire and I'm not sure I like Rewire's master-slave architecture. I hear good things about Reaper, a audio editor that can create virtual devices for routing, it might be worth a look is that would suit your needs. Yours, Kas.
I know it is not a cheap solution, but with an RME Multiface you're able to
use multiple clients with ASIO, MME or GSIF (even mixed!).
i think this is now also possible with WDM.
however, there are also some limitations:
- all clients need to work on the same sample rate
- the clients need to play/record from different channels. the same channel
can not be used by different clients, but you're able to route any channel
to any channel you want (on the dsp of the multiface).
cheers
