I am trying to install Chuck on a Fedora Core 16 system with ALSA. Greetings and happy holidays!! I am forwarding a most excellent message from our one and only Kassen that nearly got lost in the servers (we are looking into why). ChucK on! --- Fellow ChucKists, I just realised I was in danger of breaking a mult-year habbit of wishing everyone a merry ChucKmass. Callendars may be a cultural phenomenon and as such not something that we ChucKists can depend on for universal time-keeping. The solstice, however is a objective phenomenon and a quite nice occasion to turn our "=>" operators 90° counter-clockwise with some green syntax highlighting. Merry ChucKmass, all! Yours, Kas.

mod tracker style ChucK ugen, anyone interested?

Hi, I extended the chuck source code with a new unit generator what can be used to play sound samples in a way what is somewhat similar to "tracker" software like renoise, fast tracker, buzz etc. There is a concept of "samples", "instruments" and "tracks". A "sample" is a sound sample, an "instrument" adds new parameters to samples like loop points and a base frequency. A "track" is a chuck unit generator which can play back the "instruments" mentioned before, and it can be thought of as a column of a pattern in a pattern sequencer software. The main feature is that the track ugen has support for volume and frequency modulation, slides and sample retrigger effects, and each of these is computed for every sample. (So the control rate is the sampling frequency of the dac.) The volume and frequency of a sound sample can be modulated by any other sample. Note that this all could be written in chuck itself, but I chose to write it as an ugen to have better efficiency, because I like to make sounds this way. I think the system provides more or less the same functionality as the LiSa ugen, but the track concept allows even more interesting possibilities. To make it clear: This is already written and (more or less) tested by myself! So if there is general interest in such a new ugen I am happy to share this work with the public. (In my opinion it is somewhat special, but some people might find it useful.) Note that for testing one has to compile ChucK from the source code with a patch.. Imre

Hi there. I hope this is the right place to post that ... Some time ago I announced that I was working on a rewrite of ChucK in Python. I started this project because I thought creating a new programming language from scratch was a bad design decision, and ChucK as an approach to audio programming would benefit greatly from piggy-backing on a well established language. After a first proof of concept version written entirely in python, I'm happy to announce that the thing is getting real. The new C++/python version does some actual real-time sound synthesis (audio I/O is based on RtAudio), you can manipulate the Ugen network on the fly from the python interpreter and you can write/execute shreds. Beware that it is pre-alpha - no packaging, almost no testing done, nasty bugs here and there, almost no ugens (only a few oscillators) You can grab the sources and follow the evolution of the project here : https://github.com/tgirod/pyck dependencies : - cmake - boost + boost::python - RtAudio - python 2.7.x - ipython (shreds are causing a segfault on the regular python interpreter but not on iPython, and I don't know why). Any idea? BTW, we live coded for more de 2 thousand people here in Brasil at Festival Contato. Some say about ~5 thousand, i guess ~3,5k. Chuck live-coding with Vim rvl3z.
