Hello, ChucKers, I want to know if I can check whether a shred has finished running or not. For instance, lets say I run: chuck foo.ck bar.ck and bar.ck must exit immediately after foo.ck exits. chuck --probe crashes (SEGV)

Lately chuck --probe has started crashing consistently on my OSX computer. I just ran it with all midi and audio devices unplugged, and it still crashed. Any ideas? timing without audio?

As I understand it, you send some number to 'now' and for that length of time the confuser will continue to run whatever oscillator instances you've started, then go on through your code. So if you only used it to generate values to trigger voices and changes in other software, you could run Chuck without much overhead? Is this right, and how can I minimize that overhead? bandwidth in band reject filter

Hello, I'm currently using the C*APS Eq10 10-band equalizer http://quitte.de/dsp/caps.html#CAPS_for_Electric_Guitar via the LADSPA ChuGin https://github.com/jwmatthys/chugins as part of an effect but all I really need is something to scoop the mids. I thought I might use the BRF band reject filter http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/doc/program/ugen_full.html#BRF I can't tell how to set the bandwidth (or described another way, the range of frequencies around the center frequency that are rejected by the filter). I went off into reading Miller Puckette's book Theory and Techniques of Electronic Music http://msp.ucsd.edu/techniques.htm and am now lost somewhere in the imaginary plane. The definition of the Q parameter seems to vary among the different ChucK filters (resonance vs quality vs Q) and I suppose I should understand what that means. Feel free to tell me to go back to my reading. :) michael

Identifying special keys (e.g control, alt, arrow keys)

I'm interested in making a ChucK program which responds to key presses to assist users' typing. Using ascii codes from HidMsg.ascii, I can differentiate between many keys, but not some keys like the arrow keys, (on windows) control, alt, shift, tab, home, end and some others. I wasn't able to find documentation for the Hid or HidMsg classes. Is there any way to identify these keys in ChucK?

confused about time/control

greetings! a little help for a newbie?.... when i run this bit of code, i would have expected the while loop to run for only 5 seconds, printing out a new value for "beat" whenever new data comes in from MIDI. then, it should print "done". instead, it just keeps printing the new "beat" values for as long as i let it run, never getting to the "done" line. i don't understand why the "while( now < later )" doesn't kill the loop after 5 seconds. also, xruns go through the roof and i have to kill it externally. i'm on linux, using jack. Static attributes and instantiation

Casting behaviour

I have this (unexpected?) behaviour when casting. I can cast a object to its parent class, but the methods that get executed are still their own (and viceversa). What's the point of casting then? I might describe too what I'm trying to do, maybe there's a better approach. I have a .create method in Parent that returns a Parent object, and I wanted to create that same method in Child, but I can't do it because the arguments are the same, and it won't let me overwrite the method when only the return type changes. So to create a child with the .create method, I do this: Parent.create(...) $ Child @=> Child ch; Which works, but then it still behaves as a parent, so it defeats the whole purpose. Thoughts? greetings! it seems there's no command-line option for simultaneously replacing multiple shreds, right? i.e. something like this isn't implemented: chuck = 1 firstreplacement.ck 2 secondreplacement.ck did i miss something? if it's not possible, what are some good workarounds? Miniaudicle not showing Preferences menu

Not sure to what triggered it... I upgraded the miniaudicle on my computer but the problem persisted. Help? Please? questions about the Bowed UGen

Hi - I am using the Bowed UGen, and after reading the docs, trying to hear what's going on, and looking at Chuck's src, I still have some questions: (1) rate: Chuck complains that the rate method is not valid for Bowed. However, it's mentioned in some docs, and the source code has an ADSR inside, whose rate is set by noteOn/Off (but not by start/stopBowing). Also, this ADSR has reasonable decay and sustain values, but they are fixed. Is there any way to at least set the rate from Chuck code? (2) volume: it is a multiplicative factor, completely independently of whatever amplitude one sets with start/stopBowing set, right? (3) start/stopBowing: does the model have a transient, during which the string is vibrating with a different spectrum than in steady state? If not, to control the attack/decay, should I leave it bowing constantly, and control the attack/decay by adding an ADSR after Bowed, which would "gate" the sound? (4) in STK there's an asymptotic decay - is there anything like that in Chuck? (sometimes one may want a dampened, quick stop, but others one may want to let the string decay asymptotically, just as with plucked strings, regardless of having enertgized the string with a bow). Hello list! I just spent a little time scratching my head over these little functions: fun void startRecording() { <<< "Record! ", index >>>; true => lisaLeft.record; true => lisaRight.record; } fun void toggle() { !active => active; paintActive(); if (active) { startRecording; } } Everything seemed to be in order, I added a lot of print statements, and could for the life of me figure out why the startRecording function wasn't executed from toggle(). There was no error message, everything seemed to be in order. Then I peered more closely and saw that I had forgotten to put parenthesis in the function call: startRecording(); After that everything started working. Really basic question

I'd like to call a .ck program from the Mac OSX Terminal command line, and feed values to variables in the given program. For example, here's my program 'fooprint.ck': =begin program <<< foo >>> ; =end program So on the command line I'd like to write &> chuck fooprint.ck --foo=25 or whatever. Could we be looking at a running status problem? It's legal in MIDI to skip the status byte if it doesn't change. Not sure how ChucK/RTMidi handle this. I sold my WX7, or I'd check it. Prc

Chuck's capture of Midi broken?

Hi - I think that Chuck's Midi methods seem not to be working (except for very simple examples), as Chuck is dropping Midi events - I'm using the pre-compiled version of Chuck 1.3.0 (gidora), on a Mac Mini (2.7GHz I7), with OSX 10.7.5 (Lion). The only type of ON/OFF sequence in which Chuck seems not to "swallow" any notes is of the form Note1 ON, Note1 OFF, Note2 ON, Note2 OFF… Instead, I'm generating Midi streams in which there are new note On events before the prior note goes off. They happen when I play legato with a Yamaha WX5 wind controller, but any Midi keyboard would also generate such sequences if one presses a new key before releasing another one that is already sounding. I captured the following short sequence with the "MIDI Monitor" app (http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/). To make sure it was not some bug in my code, I captured the Midi using just Chuck's example in miniAudicle->File->Open Example->MIDI->gomidi (the numeric output is converted below, just for readability): Note On E2 22 CC BC (msb) 20 CC BC (msb) 25 CC BC (msb) 27 CC BC (msb) 29 CC BC (msb) 30 CC BC (msb) 32 Only by fully ending each note before playing the succeeding one, all the Note ONs/OFFs show up. But that's not useable... Any help on incantations for Chuck, workarounds, or a fix would be great! (particularly since after learning to ChucK from Rob Poor's Oxygen8, the rest of my ChucK code seems to be working nicely :-) Thanks! Daniel
