Hi Is it possible to split a string into an array of chars? Or work with parts of strings in other ways? src/util_string.h mentions these string related functions: std::string itoa( t_CKINT val ); std::string ftoa( t_CKFLOAT val, t_CKUINT precision ); std::string tolower( const std::string & val ); std::string toupper( const std::string & val ); std::string trim( const std::string & val ); std::string ltrim( const std::string & val ); std::string rtrim( const std::string & val ); I couldn't find some of them (like ltrim) in the manual, although they were mentioned in examples. Getting the status of running shreds *into* chuck

Hi I'm working on my chuck live setup again, and have a question I'm fairly sure I asked a (long) while ago: Is it possible to get the status of the VM inside a piece of chuck code? Machine.status() does the same as chuck --status, which is printing the info I need, but unfortunately to a terminal outside of chuck. The thing is, I'm sporking a lot of files from my code, and I need to keep track of which of them are still running at certain points... If this is not directly possible, does anyone have an idea for a hack? If anything else fails I think I might roll up my sleeves and hack in the chuck source, but that the last resort, since I'm not really speaking C++ that fluently... -- Atte http://atte.dk http://modlys.dk

CPU performance and Jack

Hello all, So, I'm doing a bit of heavier crunching and was wondering what aspects of CPU performance are the most critical the JACK's DSP percentage? I've not been able to find a very clear answer and was wondering if this group might know? Does running the dual core version of JACK make more sense with a slightly slower processor, or is speed the real winner in this case? To clarify, I'm basically just heavily crunching incoming audio. Thanks for any insight! -Matt

Hi Mike and others, Thanks again for your advice. I’ve read through the documentation, and I think I understand it for the most part. I had luck with taking my data, converting it to a tab delimited file and printing it to ChucK. I’ve converted the data entries to a string, but I can’t convert the values to an array. Am I just overlooking something simple? Thanks! That will disintermediate the entire process and remove the need for using Open Sound Control to send the data into Chuck. UNLESS, you mean to generate this data in realtime with Matlab and sonify it using Chuck, in which case, you should definitely use Open Sound Control to send the values to your Chuck script as they are generated. (The relevant Chuck examples will be found the folder called "osc". Those should tell you how to send and receive OSC messages.) Also, if you're sending OSC from one local program to another on the same machine, you'll probably not have to change anything with regard to your firewall. On the other hand, if you're sending from one machine to another, then you might want to disable the firewall altogether in order to test the connection. Once you get it operating, then you should probably put the firewall back on and change the settings to allow connectivity through only the ports you're using. Hope that helps! Good luck! Matlab data help

Hi guys, Thank you so much for your advice! I hadn’t realized the meaning of OSC, so I really appreciate you bringing this to my attention. I’m still a novice at programming, so I might need some time to digest the codes and examples. I’m still a bit confused about how to plug OSC outputs from Matlab into Chuck. I understand that I could eventually save the OSC values in a variable, but would I need to use UDP and take down my firewall? As was suggested, I’ve attached one of the data sets I’m working with. It’s a csv with some 3,000 data points representing the stress-strain diagram for aluminum. I’m hoping to put the values in the left column (strain) in a time array and the values in the right column (stress) in a frequency array. These values were converted from matlab. Hi Chris. Yikes, anything above about 40% CPU is pretty dicey for live audio. The OSC listeners themselves should be fairly trivial, CPU-wise. I suspect that the bulk of your power is going to calculating audio, so that's where you should look to optimize. Do you have 26 simultaneous voices sounding? If so, that might be too taxing for ChucK (or any other live audio language, for that matter). But if any of the voices are only occasionally active, I suggest unchucking UGens when they're not in use (myOsc =< dac etc.) Any UGens not directly connected in a signal path to either the dac or the blackhole will not calculate audio, thus preserving precious CPU cycles. question about memory optimization

Hello all! I have a moderately-sized project that I'm working on right now...the basic gist is that it's several smaller ChucK programs containing infinite loops and OSC event "listeners" that trigger certain behaviors or events in the music all running concurrently (the main catcher/sender for the OSC values is being written in C++). All told, in its present state there are 26 shreds running in the VM. This program takes up a LOT of CPU resources, and I was wondering if anybody had any tips on optimization, or if this is just a fact of life with a ChucK program of this nature. I know that the OSC stuff has only recently been implemented. I feel like I've been reasonably efficient with my code, but I'm seeing upwards of 80% CPU usage. It stays pretty stable, but this seems like a lot. In its current state, it's unplayable on my dual-core laptop, but my quad-core desktop can handle it OK. Thanks for any insight! -chris wicks

a little debugging help for frozen VM!

Hey, all. I'm attempting to build something that shifts layers of ChucK files based on OSC events, and I hit a snag really early on. I'm a relatively new programmer, so hopefully this isn't too stupid of a question, but I've got an issue that freezes the virtual machine and doesn't play any sound or send any OSC events. Nothing happens..the VM shows that the shreds are added, and then it just freezes and I have to force quit...it won't take a --removeall or --kill command or anything. Individually, each file works as it should, aside from the file whose code I am including here. I think I may be missing a key concept as to the way Machine.add works and how it assigns the value of the shred to an int, but I'm just not sure. If anyone can give me some direction here as to what might be happening I'd appreciate it! I've tried advancing time in various places, setting my initial pedCount to various values, all to no avail. noob: change ADSR release/floor value

Hi, I am trying to make a simple FM patch. I want the modulation index to change by ADSR, but I'm not sure what the best way to set the ADSR's gain to a range besides 0-1. (I am new to ChucK, but not to computer music and not to computer programming.) The signal path I have right now looks like this: SinOsc m => ADSR modEnv => Gain g1 => SinOsc c => dac; m => Gain g2 => c; If I set g1's gain to maxIndex - minIndex, and g2's gain is set to minIndex, I achieve the desired result, but I just want to make sure I'm not making my life unnecessarily complicated by doing it this way. coordinating rhythmic timing with unpredictable OSC events

Hello all! I'm quite new to ChucK, and I have a question concerning rhythmic timing. I've got a program that I'm working on that accepts OSC events being sent from a C++ application. Now, the program chugs along, it's quite rhytmic, and I'd like to trigger melodic shreds based on values sent through OSC. No problem doing that. My problem comes from the fact that the C++ app isn't in sync with the ChucK VM, so the times at which it chooses to send data are pretty much never in sync with everything else that's going on, so the melodic shred is triggered but is not lined up rhythmically with everything else that's going on. Is there any way to hack it so that it waits to add the shred until it's lined up with everything else (quantized, so to speak). I'm not sure if I'm properly expressing the problem, so let me know if there's some way I can further clarify. Thanks very much! -crwicks

Two loops?

I'm wondering if, instead of weaving them together in the same "while true," I could separate them into different functions (but running at the same time), or something like that? Hi Matt, if you get some xruns only at start, the overall performance of your system seems to be ok. You would get many xruns otherwise. My guess: I think chuck needs some time to initialize and build your audio chain (in your script) etc. But you try recording beginning at the first sample. So chuck isn't ready early enough and jack misses some response from chuck. Something like 1000 ms => now at the start of the script may change that. I remember this fixed some xruns of this kind for me some time ago. But I have to admit, that I am not really convinced by my own description of the reasons above. Do you also get xruns if you only connect adc and dac and then advance the time? Harald

LiSa looping issue

Hello all, I'm writing a looper using LiSa. All is behaving just as expected except for this: When I overdub, I can't seem to get out of overdub mode. I'd like to default back to a non-overdubbing recording. The .loopRec function does not work. ChucK says that LiSa does not have that function. If I force 0 => *.loop, then my playback won't loop either. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Also, if I call *.clear, I get nothing. Hopefully I'm just slow :) Thanks. Problems with running ChucK in terminal (Windows 7 64-bit): no sound!

I misspoke, I wasn't running as admin, I was running as a user (but with full privileges). It is strange about the sound card, I agree.. I figured if anything it would be a much better solution than my on-board audio. Perhaps I'll try to figure it out over the Summer when I've got a little time to spare. :) I still get some strange output using ChucK -v --loop in Windows but it all seems to resolve itself and it works, considerably better than it did on my previous installation. I don't know why, but as I'm sure many of you know, sometimes the best route is to start from scratch with a fresh install. BTW, as far as Linux is concerned, ChucK utilizing JACK built from source is AWESOME. Works amazingly well, and the Linux environs just feel better when working in a terminal, although I don't use Mac so I can't compare the two. The state of Linux drivers has generally been improving in the past few years, I think largely thanks to standardised devices, but that's not much help if you want it on Windows :-). It's still odd that the one card wouldn't work. You mentioned running as Admin, is that because you like to or is that needed? If it is needed that should probably be in the docs. Personally I don't think that is a very good sollution, but at least it is a sollution. Congratulations, Kas.
