I'm not sure if my prior message got through as it was mixed up with rejoining the group, but in that message i posted that I was working on an iPod Touch based motion control system. I have since reconsidered and went for a WiiMote approach. This was due to the fact that a friend told me that Osculator had "grown up" into a full-fledged windowed application which is a lot easier for me to use than the unix command line solution it was before (been there, not my thing anymore). So now I have four brand new WiiMotes, a copy of Osculator, and a three year old Mac mini with ChucK miniAudicle on it. I have set up Osculator to send MIDI CC messages for two of the WiiMotes including raw accels and all buttons but not including the IR sensor (yet). Also I have written some programs, the main resulting effort of which is a flute/drum program with good sound and acceptable control setup. Next I will work on improving the control gestures of the flute/drum program and possibly replacing the drums with a saxophone. Also I need to work out some kind of physical arrangement for holding the ankle or foot mounted WiiMotes. I am also updating the video blog and text record of the progress and recording songs for an album. Your suggestions and comments are very welcome, thanks in advance for your time! Les

ChucK Latency on laptop

Hello all, I've recently begun looking into using ChucK a little for odds and ends. It's a very interesting language. In fact, I just wrote a guitar (audio) looper capable of simple looping and overdubbing (to replace a stompbox). While it appears that everything works just fine, I am encountering enough latency to cause noticeable problems in my musical timing. I've tried reducing the buffersize down to 64 and I've attempted to use the --level110 command, but --level always informs me that it isn't capable of changing the schedule for some reason. I'm running Windows 7 on a simple laptop with the default soundcard (yes, I know that's pretty rough). Regardless, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to lower the latency? And how could I adjust the priority of ChucK? Thanks,Matt

functions returning arrays

Hi Chuckists, A question about arrays in Chuck: the manual briefly mentions "functions that have arrays as arguments or return type" but I can't seem to find an actual example of a function with an array as a return type. Does anyone know if this works, or there is a way to make it work? [BUG] otf blocks at error

Fellow ChucKists, When I am running "chuck --loop" in one terminal, then run "chuck + foo.ck" in another, where foo.ck is a file that contains some syntax error (or is just a random file) the last command will block. By that I mean the error is printed correctly (even "chuck -v + foo.ck" prints correctly) but after that I don't get my prompt back until I give it a extra [enter] or Ctrl+c. At the moment of removing the block the terminal running "chuck --loop" will report a "0-length packet" yet it continues to run fine. This is a bug, clearly, but more can be said about it. First of all it need not be a person issuing the otf command, it could be a script, for example if we'd like to run ChucK from a editor that supports highlighting the location of the error -if any- that depends on the compilation of code to return. For such cases plain ChucK doesn't work because when all is well ChucK likely will return a stream of data instead of a single statement. Secondly; if this would indicate a error in the error reporting that might explain the amount of segfaulting VM's at incorrect code we have recently seen. I'd quite like that one to be addressed because the VM has been crashing so easily at incorrect files that livecoding becomes a bit of a risky proposition. Well, more risky :-) This is based on the version from the repository running alsa linux, btw. Yours, Kas.

The LSU Center for Computation & Technology is pleased to announce the 1st Symposium on Laptop Ensembles & Orchestras, April 15-17, 2012 on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. The workshop will feature peer-reviewed paper sessions, panel discussions and posters focused on the current state of laptop and mobile music ensembles. Topics will include core tools and technologies for laptops and mobile devices, theoretical and historical approaches, software and hardware management, and composer perspectives. Four workshops will start the symposium, with topics ranging from programming mobile devices, using the GRENDL system for software deployment, basic electronics & circuit bending, and vocal applications for laptop ensembles. Ge Wang, director of the Stanford Laptop Orchestra and founder of Smule will give the keynote address for SLEO. There will also be performances by the Mobile Performance Group (Stetson University), Sideband (Princeton), the European Bridges Ensemble, the Linux Laptop Orchestra (L2Ork), and the Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana (the LOLs). increase chuck memory usage

Hello ChucKers, I have a ChucK class that maps all the samples in a drum kit to SndBufs https://github.com/heuermh/lick/blob/deab64e5b1eb1783e9a68bb508a0317c0287bf… Altogether this creates 238 SndBufs, which appears to be more than ChucK can handle. Sample playback skips, repeats, or is otherwise corrupted. Removing some of the mappings improves playback. Is there a way to increase the memory allocated to ChucK at startup? Alternatively, is there a better way to handle loading and playback for hundreds of samples? Thanks, michael

Callendars may be a cultural phenomenon and as such not something that we ChucKists can depend on for universal time-keeping. mod tracker style ChucK ugen, anyone interested?

Hi, I extended the chuck source code with a new unit generator what can be used to play sound samples in a way what is somewhat similar to "tracker" software like renoise, fast tracker, buzz etc. There is a concept of "samples", "instruments" and "tracks". A "sample" is a sound sample, an "instrument" adds new parameters to samples like loop points and a base frequency. A "track" is a chuck unit generator which can play back the "instruments" mentioned before, and it can be thought of as a column of a pattern in a pattern sequencer software. The main feature is that the track ugen has support for volume and frequency modulation, slides and sample retrigger effects, and each of these is computed for every sample. (So the control rate is the sampling frequency of the dac.) The volume and frequency of a sound sample can be modulated by any other sample. Note that this all could be written in chuck itself, but I chose to write it as an ugen to have better efficiency, because I like to make sounds this way. I think the system provides more or less the same functionality as the LiSa ugen, but the track concept allows even more interesting possibilities. To make it clear: This is already written and (more or less) tested by myself! So if there is general interest in such a new ugen I am happy to share this work with the public. (In my opinion it is somewhat special, but some people might find it useful.) Note that for testing one has to compile ChucK from the source code with a patch.. Imre

Hi there. I hope this is the right place to post that ... Some time ago I announced that I was working on a rewrite of ChucK in Python. I started this project because I thought creating a new programming language from scratch was a bad design decision, and ChucK as an approach to audio programming would benefit greatly from piggy-backing on a well established language. After a first proof of concept version written entirely in python, I'm happy to announce that the thing is getting real. The new C++/python version does some actual real-time sound synthesis (audio I/O is based on RtAudio), you can manipulate the Ugen network on the fly from the python interpreter and you can write/execute shreds. Beware that it is pre-alpha - no packaging, almost no testing done, nasty bugs here and there, almost no ugens (only a few oscillators) You can grab the sources and follow the evolution of the project here : https://github.com/tgirod/pyck dependencies : - cmake - boost + boost::python - RtAudio - python 2.7.x - ipython (shreds are causing a segfault on the regular python interpreter but not on iPython, and I don't know why). ChucK Language Features

Hello all, I have started to build a compositional framework in ChucK and have come across a few language features that seem to be unsupported: - For the types of inheritance structures I am thinking about, it would be incredibly useful if I was able to call a parent class's method from within a child class using something like the `super` keyword. - It would also be really awesome if I could pass a "type" as a parameter. - Not crucial at all, but it would be convenient if subclassing a `UGen` allowed you to use the chuck operator on instances of your class just like other ugens, i.e. `MyPiano p => dac`. I am interested to know if there has been work on these features since the release I am running, and if so where I can go about acquiring a more recent build. If there has not been any development on these features, I would be interested in getting to know the problems a bit more and determining if I can contribute to their development. Are any of these issues inherently difficult due to an aspect of ChucK's implementation? Let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks! ---------- Colin Sullivan

Hi people, if anyone is interested, I have published a small program which reproduces chuck's strongly timed programming in python. it's only a proof of concept, you won't get a sound out of it, but it demonstrates how you can get shreds and message passing events in pure python. It means that hypothetically, one could leverage the power of python's expressiveness and massive libraries to do many things (e.g. code modularity, complete object framework, GUIs ...). BlitSaw.period missing

Fellow ChucKists, I just noticed that BlitSaw (and I assume the other BlitFoo's) doesn't have a .period() member for setting/getting the frequency/period based on cycle-length. I feel they should have this. This would be consistent with the other oscillators (and it's not something that is affected by their nature like -say- hard-sync is), it'd be useful and it would fit with the strongly-timed style of ChucK. Clipping with LiSa

Hey All, I'm trying to write a patch that will regularly take new samples from its input. I'm routing itunes to chuck (via soundflower) and manipulating the samples with LiSa. The patch is creating a lot of strange clipping noises— like the sounds of bad guitar cables, which is confusing since this is all internal. granular synthesis in chuck
