Hi everybody, because I noticed that the DelayA ugen is not interpolating very smoothly (I find its quality to be much worse than DelayL actually, for modulated delay times), I made a DelayC class that uses cubic interpolation (with some critical bug fixing help by Kassen !). It is not very efficient by any standard, but the quality of interpolation is really good, much better than DelayL. My aim is to turn it into a real uGen, if anybody can help with that, would be great ! extending UGens thoughts

Fellow ChucKists, A few days ago I was talking with my friend Casper Schipper about the exciting new thing that extending UGens now works. Here are some modest proposals for extending that; * Reserve a ".tick()" function name for automatically overwriting the base class's tick function. Rationale; while we can (as I demonstrated with a quick example on this list) spork a shred that will make a UGen like Step or Impulse output a signal that shred will not be at the right place in the overall execution order as shreds (by definition) can't run while the Ugen-graph updates. Another down-side to that strategy is that unchucking the UGen in that case won't freeze its behaviour nor save CPU. This is inconvenient, it can harm sound quality and generally makes our own work a sort of "second rate citizen". With custom UGens that behave like build-in ones libraries shared by the community wouldn't need much of a extra manual which will make code more consistent and sharing possibly more popular. This special function would be called instead of the normal tick and would -clearly- need to be of type float or a compilation error would be thrown. Overwriting .tick() would be entirely optional, for a class foo that extends LiSa we may just wish to set some behaviour in some default way that we happen to use a lot today and have LiSa herself deal with the processing. * Reserve a "pull" float for pulling any UGens after our Ugen in the graph. Rationale; to preserve correct execution order and to have maximum flexibility in our own creations we'd like our custom UGens to have inputs. Currently this would be very hard to accomplish, even when we disregard UGen-graph execution order. "pull" would be a float that would be computed from our UGen's inputs (depending on our .op), if it's used in the tick function, and replace all uses of that variable in this call of the function. By that I mean we don't tick all of the UGens behind us multiple times just because we need the value a few times. For that reason I think it's more clear to abstract this away as a float, instead of having it be a explicit function. "pull" in the context of a function named "tick" wouldn't need to be declared, I imagine. That's elegant (I think), it's also a exception to what we have so far in that it would be a highly context dependant special variable but UGens are a unusual type in general and even with regard to timing, our big focus, behave quite unusually. So, let's have a example of what this would look like. Let's say I'd like to have a new UGen that would add a small bit of noise to a signal (example intentionally kept simple). Particularly I can't see any big things here that would backfire if at some point we'd like to be able to pre-compile external UGens into some sort of module format. This should also -as far as I can see- play nicely with the existing UGen graph functionality, for example the detection of feedback loops. Note that Casper and me were brainstorming about our wishes, any glaring errors in this post are mine. Also note that this proposal could make .tick() a thing you could explicitly call manually, possibly for all UGens. I don't see a big problem with that, it might even be useful and/or fun. Scale & diatonic

I have made a program, scale.ck, that admits one to work with scales, including tuning stretch, céleste tremulant, retune them, and then save to a file, with a line of code that can be pasted back into the source, available at next program startup. Scale tunings can be put into tuning banks, and otherwise defined by your favorite method. Details in the file. I have also updated my program for diatonic tuning systems, diatonic.ck. Hi intrepid ChucK developers/users: I've got the Lion-ready beta of ChucK working on my Macbook Pro (late 2010), but it appears that the mouse HID interface isn't working quite right. Is this a known bug? I'm testing with the "mouse-fm.ck" file in MiniAudicle (http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/doc/examples/hid/mouse-fm.ck) and it appears that the code is never reaching any of the msg.isButtonUp()/msg.isButtonDown()/msg.isMouseMovement(); states. Has anyone else encountered this? Android apps normally run on java... However, you *can* build native apps, but then they will not run on all possible devices, but only on those having the same CPU (normally ARM based). Then you would need an interface to hardware devices (audio, midi, etc.). Does rtaudio support android?

Hi chuckers, I've just tried to reproduce something I've done some time ago with guitar pedals : a feedback loop. input -> mixer -> delay -[wet]-> various effects -> back to the mixer `--> dekay -[dry]-> output by controling the amount of feedback on the mixer and the parameters of the effects in the loop you can create funny things. Using d.last(), I see the samples computed get outside the range [-1;+1] (thus the clipping) and then divert from 0 exponentially. To avoid this, I would like to truncate the sample values so they stay in the interval [-1;+1] : if s > 1 then s = 1, if s < -1 s = -1 I tried to use Dyno as a limiter, but it seems to do something more clever than that. ChucK Runtime Error

Good Morning/Afternooon/Evening! I am writing this e-mail to see if any windows users have come across the same problem I have with miniAudicle at the moment. The problem is whenever I try to add a shred to the VM it just comes up with the "miniAudicle.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message. I've tried changing a few settings (increasing buffer size, putting the log level on "none") but nothing seems to work! Hope someone has come across this problem before and knows what to do, and if you want some more info on the matter feel free to ask, I'd be more than willing to provide if it means i can finally start programming! NetIn and NetOut

Hey all, What's the current state of NetIn and NetOut? Are they deprecated? I tried using NetOut on a recent build of ChucK and received an "undefined type 'netout'" message. I saw a mention of this problem in the mailing lists a while ago but I couldn't find any resolution on the matter. If these functions have been eliminated, have any been added in their place? I just wanted to play around with live streaming and figured "netout" was the way to go. Thanks, Matt

No devices found for compiled API's

Hi there, I am trying to run Chuck on Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit. When no input file is specified the standard "no input files" message appears. When trying to run an example I get the message :"[chuck]: (via rtaudio): no devices found for compiled audio APIs!". I've taken a look at the rtAudio.cpp file but can't make any useful deductions. I definitely do have a sound device and have successfully used portaudio on the same machine - Any help would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Raymond

Hi all, Over the years I have done this for SKINI (Synthesis ToolKit Network Interface), which is a form of slightly extended textified MIDI. A couple of simple examples can be found at: https://ccrma.stanford.edu/workshops/dsp2008/prc/Week1Labs/ChucKModal/ Running the GUIModal script evokes the Tcl/TK wish interpreter, giving you a GUI with sliders and buttons. It pipes the output of that, which is SKINI, into the stdin of chuck running Modal.ck. The StdIn Class is called Skot (deprecated, should be called ConsoleInput), and the substring parser is called PRC (now called StringTokenizer). skinihak.c can read SKINI files with time stamps and dole them out (flushing it's stdout) to be piped into a SKINI-reading chuck program. So skinihak spain.ski | chuck Modal.ck will play that scorefile. In the directory I pointed you to, skinihak is Linux, skinihakMac is PowerPC, you can build what you like 'cause the source is there. For IntelMac SnowLeopard, without Rosetta, you can build one that works using something like: gcc -m32 -o skinihakMacIntel skinihak.c Enjoy!!! PRC

I'm working on a project that requires low latency peak detection. But I'm struggling with the low-latency part. I'm not sure if there's just a problem with chuck, my code, or if my computer is slow. I'm on an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz processor. Here's two ways to demonstrate the problem (you'll need speakers and a mic): 1. With headphones in, adjust the threshold as low as possible without picking up room noise (under //ADJUST THIS) then run the code. Make a percussive sound into your mic that coincides with one of the impulses, then kill chuck and look at the output. On my machine, it detects the peak ~200ms after the metronome, even though I made the sound immediately when I heard the metronome. 2. With speakers on, adjust the threshold and your speaker volume so that the Impulses are detected as peaks, but no room noise is. Run the program for a few clicks and kill it, then look at the output. On my machine, again, I get a ~200ms delay. Do other people have this same problem? Why is this happening?

Hi ! I'm currently having some fun with ChucK and my keyboard, and thought it would be nice to share my little experiments. It's a polyphonic synthesizer class that can easily be overridden. Here is an example: Gain g => dac; // we create the synthesizer Synth synth; // connect all its voices to the gain synth.connect(g); // set the device number 0 => int device; // start the synth synth.start(device); // and that's all. while(true) day => now; There, you have a basic synthesizer with some SinOscs that you can control with your little MIDI keyboard (or a virtual keyboard connected with jack, that's your business). There is 20 voices by default, which means you can press 20 keys at the same time (if you want to use your toes, for example). Now, you want to add a vibrato and a tremolo, and you want to control them with a potentiometer or a cursor. No problem ! First, get the identifier of the controls on your MIDI controller (with the mididump.ck script, for instance). ive been interested to try out chuck as a programming language for my monome, but i seem to be having some difficulties with the installation. im on a macbook pro 10.6.8 btw. i downloaded the chuck executable as well as miniaudical. i opened up the chuck executable which opened up a chuck folder with a bunch of things in it, and i stored them both in my applications folder. in the chuck manual, theres a section i included in an attachment that talks about replacing the x's with the actual "directory name". what is a "directory name" and how do i find out what my directory name is? id really like to get this going, thanks in advance for any help! hopefully i ll be chucking soon.
