Hi everyone, I have a cool idea. Tonight I'm going to start on a ChucK Chat application. This will be a serverless application, so client only. Each program has a list of ip addresses of your pals in it. As you type, it sends out OSC messages that deliver the text to all of the pal clients. The program also displays everything received. The idea is to chat and also jam musically (add music later) - I just thought it would be cool to do a ChucK chat session program! :) Does anyone have any comments or suggestions regarding this concept? I'm coding it now, so please reply soon! Les

Today's ChucKchat NetLooping Session

For about two or three hours today, I did netlooping on radio.electro-music.com using ChucKchat. The results were quite positive. I announced it on facebook where many music friends hang out, and we got 10 listeners - half from electro-music chat regulars and half from facebook. That's just about how many we get for scheduled shows so it indicates at least some level of interest. I did vocals and music into the loop and explained lots of things about how it all works, plus joked around with the folks in chat. Then near the end, Blue_Hell installed his setup and remotely controlled my software from across the Atlantic ocean! He successfully did things like change tempo and gain and such, but quickly lost interest because, let's face it, a three-word command line interface is not very musically intuitive. So my next goal is to make it more fun by using the mouse and/or keyboard to control the music remotely. That should help a lot in terms of fun. Overall it was a big success for an impromptu event and we hope to have many more events like this. Yay \o/ Les

altering a sample while it reads

hey all, Is there a way to control aspects of a sample (rate, reverb, delay) while it is being read? I'm interested in, say, playing a minute-long speech sample and being able to change the effects as it is playing. I've done this with supercollider and pure data but can't seem to find the resources in chuck. Thanks! all best, Tim

Internet Jam Suggestion

I'd like to address the topic of delay and synchronization during internet jams. I feel that the very approach of trying to accomplish audio synch in the current medium of audio over the internet is somewhat inappropriate. In a way it's kind of like trying to get flute sounds out of a guitar. Maybe it's possible, but it's really not in the nature of the beast. To be sure there will come a day when the lag monster is largely defeated and we can jam with simultaneous artists, but that day is not today. I remember the frustration expressed by my fellow grad students whose simulators kept their workstations or even supercomputer accounts busy for long periods of time. I had no such problems as I had chosen to restrict my simulation constraints such that compute times were short. Looking back, this was appropriate as I was matching what I wanted to accomplish to what I had as a resource. In a similar way, perhaps we should not be attempting to defeat the lag monster, but rather to create novel musical jamming techniques that operate within the timing constraints of the web. Now, that's easy for me to say and do because via the power of ChucK and my amateur musician status I can do just about whatever I want, and others may not have that luxury for various reasons. So please accept my apologies if you are limited in this way creatively beyond your control, however I do maintain that we should be doing what we can do, not what we want to do. Back when I constrained my simulator complexity within the available compute constraints, I suffered the consequences of riling up anger and derision from those without that freedom or that choice. I hope that will not be the case with this message. Rather, I wonder if we can discuss ways to create music that fits the web rather than discuss programming that accomplishes synchronization over a web that denies it. I welcome your comments on this topic and I apologize in advance if I have offended anyone. Just my two cents, eh? Les

We tested ChucKchat last night and found some major improvements, a polite way of saying that the prototype was pretty crude so my apologies if you tried it and found it lacking. Anyway, all those bugs are fixed, especially with the use of line reading which forces us to use the command line version of ChucK only but that's OK. We did manage to test features like turning each other's music on and off from across the web and that worked just fine. Several details like text feedback of each feature, etc, were added. I also put the ip addresses in a "friends.txt" file external to the source code so I can distribute the code without revealing my friends' ip addresses to the world, nice feature lol. At radio.electro-music.com I have started some discussion about having a ChucKchat net-looping concert which should be fun, and in the mean time I am doing some individual net-looping of my own. Oh, and ChucKchat now has a properly working and debugged Karplus Strong algorithm driven by a thing of my own creation, a Boolean Sequencer. Just keeping you all updated. I wrote some code for the Novation Launchpad a while back, and I was taking a look at it recently and (of course) couldn't figure out how it worked, so I wanted to start over. I separated the interaction with the Novation Launchpad into a side project so that I could just grab it whenever. Here it is, for reference, if anyone wants to copy it. Rock Band Wireless Keyboard: is it any good?

Has any of you experimented with this device http://www.amazon.com/Rock-Band-Wireless-Keyboard-PlayStation-3/dp/B003RRTX… ? It looks interesting and packs a lot of punch for a $60 device. It has a midi interface, a lot of neat buttons and a touch sensitive bar! It would be especially cool if the computer could recognize it and all the keys as a joystick device so one could use it in a true wireless fashion without worrying about the midi adapter. I'm seriously thinking about buying one, but don't want to risk getting one just to find out that it won't work or has lot's of limitations... Thanks!

MIDI guitars

Though bit off topic, I remember a nifty guitar to MIDI system that Julius Smith and Phil Gosset developed in the back rooms of CCRMA. At the moment it detected a string pluck, it would make a rough guess of the pitch and immediately issue a NOTE_ON command. Then it would start issuing pitch bend commands to refine the guess as the waveform became more periodic. So it was responsive and didn't require a guitar with a wired neck. prevent samples from clipping

SndBuf allocating 2x memory?

Hey everybody, After noticing my test SndBuf programs were eating more memory than I expected I started looking around on the list and wiki but couldn't find any relevant discussions. SndBuf resource usage

Hi there, I found a thread or two in the past that talked a little about this. I'm hoping that in the time since those discussions there've been some internal improvements to ChucK that might help me have a bunch of samples ready to fire concurrently without eating my box alive. Here's how I repro the issue (running on a late-model 2.13GHz MacBook Air): SndBuf buf[512]; // gets more responsive as I reduce to <384 or so fun void connect(SndBuf b) { b => dac; } for (0 => int i; i < buf.cap(); i++) { spork ~ connect(buf[i]); } while (1::second => now) <<< now >>>; If there's nothing I can do about SndBuf's wasteful behavior is there a better/more ChucKian-approved way to prepare a bunch of independent audio buffers (hopefully >1024) for arbitrarily-timed concurrent playback? Really hoping that the answer isn't that I need more cpu cycles on that core and/or that I'll need to distribute ChucK and set up some kind of sync mechanism :-/. ChucKers: By popular request, I've just created two ChucK specific "git repositories" that you can view, download and (if you are versed with git) create branches and update. One is a rational number package, that efficiently converts between floating point numbers and rational approximations (in the form of a/b, where a and b are integers). The other is the extensive setup I have used for live performance. One of the funner bits are: * lib/semaphore.ck, which can wait for an event or for a time, whichever comes first. * a comprehensive dispatch/observer message passing mechanism for distributing events. Hello and the state of ChucK question

Hi everyone, I'm new to the list, so a word about me. I'm a software developer in Open Government field and musician focused on experimental and concrete music working from time to time with interactive technologies in dance and theatre. I'm heavily interested in ChucK future development. I come from Poland. Hello everyone ChucKing around!! My question is about the current state and future plans for ChucK. I'm interested especially in: 1. who is responsible for the ChucK website and is it possible to help him/her somehow to make it up to date (documentation, download and install information, some info about the current state, maybe some roadmap)? I'll be happy to spend some free time (not much of it, but a few hours a week for the beginning could be enough) to work on it. 2. is there any mechanism for implementing additional functionality (let say Perlin Noise) directly in ChucK to become a part of ChucK the way Quarks work in SuperCollider? Or the only way of sharing with others is just giving the code and then adding it to the chuck call like: $ chuck-alsa Perlin MyStuff1 MyStuff2 3. is there anyone to expand the developers guide a bit? I'm not a C++ guy and will not implement closures as a new feature in ChucK, but I could write some extensions in C (if not possible in ChucK as in point 2) and attach it to the language. The documentation though is really hard for not advanced programmer and C person (this C++ syntax scares me a lot ;)). 4. will ChucK be developed in future and is there any roadmap for it? hello, could anyone offer advice on controlling individual chuck patches with an external device? currently my mode of operation is to add several shreds and control their parameters with maudi sliders (buf.rate, reverb, delay, gain), but i'd prefer to use an external controller. i have an 8 channel alesis mixer with usb-- could this help to answer my question? please let me know if you have any controllers in mind, and also which section of the manual is best to read for making these connections. thank you! tim
