I have students who have encountered this general problem with mics, keyboard, and trackpads (with OSX 10.14/15 and OSX 11) Personally, I have never gotten miniAud to trigger the "wants to access" prompt yet. I use this work-around: Open the application Terminal and type the following: open /Applications/miniAudicle.app/Contents/MacOS/miniAudicle This opens miniAudicle via Terminal which allows it to inherit all of the access permissions of Terminal. The above link is assuming that your miniAudicle is located in the Applications folder on your drive. Otherwise you will need a different directory path. One of my Mojave machines at least launched the “MiniAudicle wants access to your microphone” dialog, and Mini now shows up in the Security pane of System Preferences. BUT, opening adc with system Mic selected just ylelds zeroes. Running the very same ChucK code: adc => Gain g => blackhole; // or dac while (1) { <<< now/second, g.last() >>>; second/10 => now; } in Terminal yields the usual non-zero mic output floats on the adc channel. Running it in Mini yields zeroes. I’ve tried it with multiple mic devices (headphone External Mic) and same result, zeroes on Mini. Hi, I suppose one solution could be to have a new dedicate class (ie SysexMsg) with a getSysex() method, and then tweak the various bits that deal with receiving MIDI so that if the incoming msg is a sysex we can use a SysexMsg object instead of a MidiMsg one. The end result could be something along this line: MidiIn min; MidiMsg msg; SysexMsg sysex; ... ... while (true) { min => now; while (min.recv(sysex)) do something while (min.recv(msg) do something else } cheers, Mario

MidiIn/MidiMsg expansion

Hi all, As you know I was trying to add sysex support to ChucK, and there are some progress there. I managed to let sysex msg through, and I can get the first 3 bytes using the data1, data2 and data3 member variables (MidiMsg). But of course sysex messages can have any length, so I was trying to find a way to return an array containing the received sysex. It's easy enough to internally store the sysex message received (ie tweaking the MIDI callback and MidiIn and increasing the array used to store incoming MIDI msg), but then when it's time to retrieve this array, well I'm a bit lost tbh. MidiMsg in midiio_rtmidi.cpp appears to be a union, and this makes things a bit trickier since I was thinking about having a member method that returns the sysex array (ie similar to SerialIO.getytes()). Does anyone have any idea about the best way to proceed here? Any help is really appreciated :) cheers, Mario

Does a Std.system call block concurrency?

Hi, Is the ChucK thread disrupted by the execution time of a Std.system script call? In the code below, sporking a fast script, e.g. Std.system("sleep 0"), there is no noticeable disruption, but sporking a time consuming version e.g. Std.system("sleep 3") there is a disruption in the other sporks. Fifo with Chuck?

This is a built-in feature in csound on linux, that you can send score lines to a fifo that csound -L will pick up and execute. With chuck, I can open a fifo as a file, read it, send it a line of numbers -- but as soon as chuck has read the last number, it reads the eof and stops working. Is there a way to halt just short of the eof? I suppose I could add a dummy value at the end... but is there something less clumsy available?

64-bit Chugins on Windows?

I'm seeking help getting Chuck 1.4.0.1 to recognize a chugin that I've compiled with CMake. I've compiled chuck.exe from source and confirmed that it's 64-bit with chuck --version. I've also compiled the chugin as 64-bit. When I do all those steps as 32-bit, the chugin works. However, for 64-bit, chuck can't load the chugin. I've tested with miniaudicle and from command line. I'm using CMake on Windows to make the chugin. Hopefully a missing compile flag etc isn't causing the issue. More details are here: https://github.com/ccrma/chugins/issues/45 Thank you!

miniAudicle ADC not working?

Hi! I’m taking my first foray into ChucK with a little background with RTcmix, and am excited to see how many times I can accidently blow out my eardrums! I’m hoping to start up a LORK, and am wondering if ChucK would work for our situation – or at least part of the project. ADC… It works great in the terminal (MacOS Catalina). I just have a little throughput signal: adc => dac; while (true) { 100::ms => now; } In the terminal, it works great. No problems. In miniAudicle, I get nothing. The dac works in miniAudicle, but nothing is coming in through my mic (Scarlett 2i2). I hooked up a blackhole (adc => Gain g => blackhole) to monitor the adc input, but it just reports 0.0. I’ve checked my prefs, and my Scarlett is chosen. I’ve closed and reopened miniAudicle, and shut down and restarted the Virtual Machine. No ADC input. When I try to probe my devices, I get: System error: (CoreAudio unknown error) getting sample rate info… Then nada. I’ve also “allowed mic access” in Security/Privacy. Any suggestions? Is this a “Catalina breaks lots of stuff” bug? THANKS! Eddie

Mouse under Mojave+

Hi all, Has anyone had trouble, or succeeded, with using the mouse since Mojave? I suspect that it’s a permissions thing, but nothing asks if it can use the mouse. I know that Processing users have had trouble with camera permissions, so I suspect this might be similar. Odd that ChucK will open the mouse and report that it’s ok, tho. miniAudicle crashing on Windows 10

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with MiniAudicle crashing on Windows 10 when trying to play an audio sample it seems to crash immediately. I am using the most recent version of miniAudicle. Below is the code I am using but it seems to close out when trying to play any audio file. SndBuf hihat => dac; me.dir() + "/audiosamples/drums/HiHats.wav" => string hd; 0 => hihat.pos; 1.0 => hihat.rate; 1.0 => hihat.gain; hd => hihat.read; 1::second => now; No errors get a chance to print out to the console. Chugins missing from Homebrew 1.4.0.1 install

Hello, After installing chuck 1.4.0.1 via Homebrew on a new OSX machine, I am not finding the default Chugins (i.e. from https://github.com/ccrma/chugins <https://github.com/ccrma/chugins>). Is this an oversight by the Homebrew formula authors? Cheers, michael

Determining the address of an OSC message

Hello, ChucKers! I am looking for a way to receive an arbitrary OSC message and determine its address. In my toy example, my receiver will receive messages at /sndadj/lgain and /sndadj/rgain and adjust the gain of the L or R channel accordingly. Here's a program that would probably work if there were an OscEvent.address() function: SinOsc sl => dac.left; SinOsc sr => dac.right; 0.5 => sl.gain; 0.5 => sr.gain; 225 => float lfreq; 150 => float rfreq; lfreq => sl.freq; rfreq => sr.freq; OscRecv recv; 6449 => recv.port; recv.listen(); OscEvent oe; recv.event("/sndadj/lgain, f" ) @=> oe; recv.event("/sndadj/rgain, f" ) @=> oe; while (true) { oe => now; while (oe.nextMsg() != 0) { // XXX - OscEvent.address() doesn't exist if (oe.address() == "/sndadj/lgain") { oe.getFloat() => sl.gain; } else { oe.getFloat() => sr.gain; } } } I do have a version working with a single /sndadj/gain address which sends two floats, but it makes my sender uglier and I feel like address discernment is something ChucK probably does anyway. Hi there! I stumbled upon Ge's ofxChuck page earlier today. I would be very interested in exploring this addon. My installation of OpenFrameworks is on a Raspberry Pi 4 however. The README.md is written with the XCode IDE in mind. I'm using Vim on my RPi, via ssh, though pixel desktop environment is also installed. Are there any reasons ofxChucK would not work as an addon to OF on a RPi 4? If anyone has done this and/or written a tutorial I'm all ears. Otherwise I'll endevour to write one myself if I get it going! micheal

Passing functions as arguments

Hi all, Chuck newbie here. Is it possible to pass a function as an argument? I'd like to be able to transform things in a functional programming manner. As a trivial example, if I had an array of midi notes and wanted to raise them all one interval. fun int increment(int note) { note + 1; } // use map to apply a function to all elements of an array map ( array_of_notes, increment); thanks in advance, John

hi there, Webchuck is such an excellent development - thanks for all the work that has gone into this by Jack (and others I'm sure). Hopefully I'll be able to contribute in some way in future, after getting up the learning curve a bit more! I have a question about using OSC with webchuck... I have a .ck script running on my local machine, using OSC to emit messages every X samples of a .wav file played by a SndBuf. These OSC messages are received by a webpage on my local machine. For this receiver I am running the page using node.js, and... * https://github.com/automata/osc-web * socket.io Locally, this works fine - as I play the .wav file via ChucK on MiniAudicle, the webpage at localhost:3000 displays the OSC messages as I'd expect. However when I try to run this same .ck file using Webchuck, I get the following error message: chucknode.js:189 [osc-eibhlin.ck]:line(38): undefined type 'OscOut'... Does Webchuck feature OSC messages yet? Thanks Micheal

What's the state of the art for imports/includes? If I have files lib0.ck and lib1.ck that declare public classes both used in control.ck, I understand these to be the two options for running them: chuck lib0.ck lib1.ck control.ck or, make another file control-main.ck: Machine.add("lib0.ck"); Machine.add("lib1.ck"); Machine.add("control.ck"); and run it as: chuck control-main.ck I thought it would work to use Machine.add("lib0.ck"); Machine.add("lib1.ck "); as the first line of control.ck and then just run chuck control.ck, but the included classes are not found. Are these the two options, or is there another way that can support transitive inclusion (not having to list each util file for every program that uses them)? Thanks, Curtis

So if I understand you correctly, this is solved fairly easily by a structure we propose in the "ChucK Book” 1) Create a file that loads (by Machine.add()) all the classes you think you’ll need. 2) As the last line of that, have it Machine.add() a different file, which then either does the work, or adds any file(s) that depend on those initial classes. I’ve sometimes even named these files include.ck and Main.ck but include also runs Main, so it’s not strictly an “include” or import. Hope this helps, PRC
