Writing wav results in empty file

Writing wav will result in file with correct length, but silence. BTW. how to make it so that if it is too slow to play it realtime, wav is still correct with no noises? Could you give exact command line for that? I'm using debian lenny with xfce and alsa+oss. Chuck is compiled for alsa support (I might want to change it already). Tambet

ChucK is too short.

The name "ChucK" needs some kind of prefix or suffix to give some method of good Google searches. "ChucK music" gives ChucK berry; just "ChucK" gives a movie; "ChucK videos" is useless. If Google did understand the last capital letter, it would be all fine. Google's own language is Go (or "Google Go"). They have another way to write it - "Go-lang". Go-lang gives all necessary things. "Go programming" does the same, but for general searches, this is not good - you might search for Go examples (and this sight might have no hint about programming) or Go users. You could search for Go libraries (not "Go programming libraries") or e-mail applications written in Go (no "e-mail applications written by programming in Go"). Just having some convention - for example that "ChucK" is abbreviation of "Chuck K..." and then having this "Chuck K..." in title or first occurrence of language's name in each good page talking about ChucK. Otherwise it's just too much work to search :) So ..ChucK name conquest? With this <http://www.dasher.org.uk/> powerful application I found a few days ago it took half of minute to find my own suggestion - "Chuck Kit". It could be also "Chuck sound Kit" or "Chuck soundKit" (to keep the case convention). I would be happy if it was *anything* - anything except some very common english name, which gives us all kinds of stars and TV programs when googled for. Tambet

As with much Google, just adding the right word(s) helps a lot. Fellow ChucKists, I was poking around in the source for "maybe" to try to figure out how hard Joe's idea would be to implement. So far it looked really quite easy to me, except that the chuck operator would have to be overloaded to deal with chucking floats to "likely" and "unlikely". This made me wonder what kind of error this would give; 1 => maybe; It turns out that doesn't give a error at all and instead seg-faults (latest miniAudicle, linux ALSA, canonical version except for the CNoise fix). So; regardless of whether or not we go with Joe's idea this area does need a look. I vote that we do take this idea as it would be very little work for something that would be that much fun. With a default of .75% for likely and 25% for unlikely it would have all of the advantages of the various proposed strategies and on top of that we'd get a easy "crossfade" for chance-based techniques that may span several shreds. Question re: installing ChucK on Mac

Hi, The installation instructions I downloaded say to reconfigure the terminal of a Mac but the Apple people I consulted advised me not to do that. They say reconfiguring the terminal is outside the warrantee and they see it as potentially destroying the computer! Is there another way to install ChucK without altering the terminal? As I just thought of it today and my thoughts are better than there - I think that a simple overload for multiplication operator would be just enough. Like this: if (maybe * 0.2) { // Runs with probability of 20% } Or, more coherent, but less nice: if (maybe(0.2)) { // Runs with probability of 20% } Then, when doing switches, how to handle those? It would be nice to have something like: switch { case maybe * 0.3: case maybe * 0.5: case maybe * 0.6: case true: } In case it would automatically fix all maybes - so that actual probabilities would add up to 100% and, thus, first one is fixed to about 0.2 and second one to slightly less than 0.5 ..this would allow really nice play with probabilities (and, of course, optimizations internally). Hello, Is it possible to determine the IP address of the client sending an incoming OSC message? There is no documentation on the API of the OscEvent class. I'm trying to find a way of dealing with multiple OSC clients that are sending the same OSC message. Initial download risk or just joking?

Can someone please advise if someone is being facetious or is there really a risk in the download? When you click the Download link the first paragraph reads: "ChucK-1.2.x.x is part of the Dracula release of ChucK - why Dracula? While the previous release (Frankenstein/1.1.x.x) offered the proof of concepts (timing, concurrency, on-the-fly programming) with a generous propensity to explode, the Dracula release is more refined and powerful with the addition of arrays, objects, events (and better explosions too). Additionally, the Dracula release is yet unoptimized and may suck all blood and life from your computer (anticipate spectacular crashes and other bloody disasters)... I think you should try changing the pop-up menu to the left of the frequency one to 8 channels. Or something. The system may make a choice for 2 channels for you which your unit also supports, and then ChucK can't do that choice. eChucK Update

Hi all, To clarify about the eChucK project, I am not running ChucK on the boards that I have created. What I do is run miniAudicle on my Mac mini and code up test programs that consist of ChucK code that is specifically written to mimic actual hardware analog and digital circuits. Then I play around with the ChucK model until I am happy with it, then convert the ChucK program into electronic circuit form. Hence eChucK for electronic ChucK. I cleared the name with Ge a long time ago, he seemed to think it was a cool idea. This first circuit board is a modular synthesizer board that implements a Karplus Strong algorithm using analog circuitry. KS has been implemented in many forms including ChucK, but as far as I know this is the first modular synthesizer board that does it. The next planned board will use a simplified version of the KS circuit and a Boolean Sequencer to create a little song generator with headphones out and five dials to alter the music. That one will be a stand-alone product that anyone can buy or build without having a modular synthesizer or anything. Well, that's the update, hope I cleared things up . Les

Hi Chuckists, I just wanted to mention that this eChucK project lives on, converting ChucK algorithms into circuit boards. I just got done preparing a batch of 22 boards for mailing out to customers around the world. This one is a modular synthesizer product only intended for people who make their own modular synthesizers. The next project will be a "Credit Card Synth", a little mini synth that makes great sounds in the form factor of a credit card (though thicker of course). Timing Issue

Hello, I have to preface this by saying that I may be missing an obvious answer, but what object will allow me to wait for an amount of time before a shred is active? Usually I set the gain to zero (on the otf 7 patch) for a few phrases and that works fine: after a minute, I can have a snare drum come in for a chorus. Though I'm afraid that there's a more logical way to do this... Thanks
