Hi, I started learning ChucK but then realized I wouldn't be able to make simple graphics to help me debug my program (is that actually the case?)... if so too bad... Also, AudioTwist is a pd external that does 3D sound well and has many features. My questions: 1. When is Tabula Rasa coming out? I'm assuming you will be able to draw things (kinda like processing) from inside ChucK. (unless, of course you can make simple graphics in ChucK already?) 2. Is anyone going to port AudioTwist (www.sat.qc.ca), or write similar 3D audio objects for ChucK? Can you do 3D audio in ChucK already?

Fellow ChucKists, At the start of the next month the city of Utrecht (NL, EU) will host this year's Linux Audio Conference. There I'll do a workshop on ChucK but there will also be a panel discussion on various programmable open systems for audio (SC, PD, CSound, Nyquist, maybe more). This should help clear up many of the things that are unclear (to many) about the differences between these systems. The results of this will be posted online where they will hopefully help prevent flame-wars or at least give more substance to any that do arise. Of course this will involve some quick demonstrations. This leads to the question of what ChucK is especially good for as compared to other systems. Time for this will be brief in this context so I'd like to show some good stuff. I have some ideas of my own but I'd like to consult the list too. What's especially useful/fun to you? What (positively) surprised you compared to other systems? Debate, anecdotes and code examples are all welcome. Do come shake hands if you end up going to the LAC; at 2m with a afro I'm quite hard to miss. Yours, Kas.

I have seen scattered postings related to wiimotes and ChucK, but nothing definitive. Is anyone out there using wii-remotes or nunchuks as controllers for ChucK? Are there any wikis or recipes for this kind of hack? Guile C++ wrap

I started to write a bit on a Guile C++ wrap*), and it strike me it may give some inputs on the discussion on giving ChucK functional language capabilities. First, Guile has a conservative GC (meaning that it just tries to collect some pointers, not necessarily all). It makes C++ implementation very simple: you don't have to write operator=() and copy constructors, because normally, when an object is mutated, it is being done using *this = f(*this) where f is a function of the functional language (so normal object referencing just needs to hand over the pointer). But the question is if such a GC can be made without causing timing problems. Then I use templates to do some Haskell style static typing, though C+ + is a bit too limited. But it is fully possible see what kind of syntax might be possible. For example, one can define an increment function using function1<integer, integer> inc = x >>= x + 1 (though I must use a more complicated syntax in the actual code due C+ + and Guile limitations). Here, ">>=" is the lambda, and in math it is the symbol ↦, in ASCII looking like |->. The Haskell-like define-function-by-cases syntax would be something like: function1<integer, integer> inc; inc(x) = x + 1; though it is hard to get it to instantiate properly using C++ templates. But if built into a ChucK parser, that should be no problem. But it seems that the current ChucK syntax might be enhanced with functional language features. Hans *) http://math.su.se/~haberg/guile/

Thanks all for your responses. Just to clarify, my hope is to make a standalone app that can randomly select among 20-30 sound files to play back 5-8 simultaneously as a single "track." The hope then is that users can move to different points in the playback of the "track" just as they would in an MP3 player like itunes. I like the command-line idea, but it seems like jumping to different parts of the audio files might not be possible. Is that true? Perry, I'll look into the chunks idea when I get home. I like it because it would allow me to keep everything in ChucK. My only concern is that pausing playback to periodically load new chunks into the buffer would result in stutters. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks! The command-line gui-free approach can be done in Windows also, using DSrender.exe, which "plays" almost any kind of media. hello chuckists! i have a quick question for all you audio programmers out there. so i'm looking for the quickest, cheapest way possible to play large quantities of audio (preferably wav or aif files). i have a project where i need to be able to have up to 20 five minute audio files loaded and ready to play at once (though only 5-8 of those will actually play at any one time). i looked into using the SndBuf object (perhaps naively) but quickly realized that the initial load time would be prohibitive. is there a way to incrementally load a file into SndBuf without causing unwanted stutters? or would WvIn be a better choice? also, i don't really need to load the file for editing or manipulation. all i am looking to do is to play the files simultaneously. if there's not a quick, cheap way to do this in ChucK, i'm open to using other languages. unfortunately, i'm not as experienced at accomplishing audio tasks in other languages as i am in chuck, so i'm not sure how this would be done. any help at all would be greatly appreciated. thanks! michael

eChucK Update

Hi again ChucKists, The current news on eChucK is that the first run of Karplus Strong boards is now assembled and tested working. I sold nine boards, three assembled, and kept one. To date two are working and demonstrated in various formats at electro-music.com, the host of the ChucK forum. The latest move forward is that I finally looked into the details of performing physical modeling of instruments in analog circuit form. It turns out that I can use the same translation methodology to convert instrument models coded in ChucK into physical analog circuits. I was doing it all along with Karplus Strong, it's just that now i've learned more and realized I can make a flute module or a trombone module or whatever. Although this has been done using modular synthesizers before, I have not yet heard of any commercially available modular synthesizer modules that do this. So that's the update, I'd be happy to hear any advice or warnings or news on the topic. At this time I am not familiar with the legalities of using potentially copyrighted models or patented ones, etc. I have a lot to learn but it should be worth it because I think there's a pretty good market for this stuff. I would guess this has already been written, but I got tired of writing and then commenting out trace / debugging comments in my ChucK code, so I put together this simple class modeled loosely after similar packages in Java other languages. It comprises all static functions, so you can call it from anywhere. Complete and utter Newbie

Hi I just came across ChucK after dabbling with SC, Common Music and Max/MSP. I basically know nothing about programming but ChucK looks very interesting and I'd like to know more. I've download the executable file (Mac OS 10.6.2) and I've dropped the folder "chuck-1.2.1.3-exe' into applications. I've followed the instructions and opened the terminal and now I'm stuck..... The instructions say go to bin/directory (replace chuck-x.x.x.x.-exe with the directory name). What and where is bin/directory? You'll have to forgive my complete stupidity, I'm an 'acoustic composer' trying to dabble with electronic based music and so far i cant even install ChucK. Messing around with my terminal seems scary, am I likely to blow my computer up?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks James

Hi I'm trying to manipulate a stream of midi clock messages with a chuck script, but fail. sndbuf glitch

Hey ChucKians, So, I've talked to some of you about this problem before, and have been given various solutions, including playing with chunking, but so far, nothing has been able to resolve this basic issue. It's really kept me from doing any significant work with sound buffers ChucK. Here's the issue: When you read a file into a sound buffer - doesn't matter how large the file is, the audio "clicks". Doesn't matter what else is currently "playing", whether it's an oscillator, another sndbuff, etc - it just invariably clicks. Case and point: ---- SndBuf s1 => dac; SndBuf s2 => dac; 0 => s2.gain; //turn down the gain of 2 so you can hear the click "file1.aif" => s1.read; 2::second => now; "file2.aif" => s2.read; 2::second => now; ---- So, this script starts playing the first file, then in 2 seconds when it loads "file2.aif" into the other SndBuf (who's gain is turned town) - CLICK! I know - this can be resolved by loading all needed soundbufs at the top of the code, but this is very restrictive. I want to be able to load in new audio on-the-fly - but currently, Chuck simply doesn't seem to support this basic feature. Hey guys I'm trying to do a simple chuckle, but something's going wrong when I try to set s.freq... SinOsc s=>dac;Phasor p=>blackhole;p.freq(2);while(1){Math.sqrt(1/p.last())*100=>s.freq;10::ms=>now;}; If I dump "Math.sqrt(1/p.last())*100" I get floating values as expected between 100 and 700, but when I chuck it to s.freq, no sound is output, and s.last() is always 0. Am I missing something or is this a bug?

Simple question about getting a basic frequency spectrum

Hi, I am a little confused with fourier-transforms, math not being my specialty. In essence all I am trying to do is take 1 second samples of an audio file and print out coordinates as follows: - amplitude at 80Hz, amplitude at 200Hz, amplitude at 1000Hz I have set up a file connecting: SndBuf buf => dac; buf => FFT fft => blackhole; And now I assume that I set the fft.size to 1024 samples (for a 44k 16bit audio file) and then upchuck that every 1024 samples.
