Hi I've written a sampler class that simplifies various things, that I found I have to re-invent over and over again: * Polyphony, with dynamic voice allocation (stealing of oldest note) * Optional envelope * Automatic handling of stereo samples * Supports multi-samples (zones) I tried to make it easy to use and flexible enough to work with simple one-shot drums and polyphonic, multi-sampled, enveloped samples (strings, piano, etc). I'm gonna add build-in midi support + support for more code like length based triggering. Have anyone done something similar? Michael, I was looking through your git repo today and I think I'm starting to understand what's going on here. Truth be told, I'm not much of a computer scientist. That being said, I think that this code is well organized, well thought out, etc. It looks to be an extension to Chuck not unlike the Java class library (or Smalltalk, if you prefer that example). I think that this is a really good place to start. The classes are small and simple, which I really like. Library-Like Code

Hey all, I just posted some very primitive (pun intended) Iterator classes for arrays of Ints and Floats. (http://wiki.cs.princeton.edu/index.php/Chuck/Lib) I find them useful in certain situations. (I think Michael Heuer has some superior ArrayList / Iterator code somewhere.) Now, I'm well aware that most of you have personal class libraries that you use to do your thing with Chuck (I do too). There are also collections of code out there focusing on specific domains (SMELT, etc). I wonder about all this code and whether or not there might be some willingness to curate (for lack of better word) a collection of library-like code that we might post somewhere--in some package that isn't code posted on a wiki. It's not really a class library... it's not really package... it's more like a distribution. But I think that it would be really helpful and fun. There's something about posting code to the wiki that really makes me cringe. Documentation of code is really what wiki's are good for. I think that a downloadable collection with wiki documentation would be ideal. I know that this couldn't be any sort of rigorously designed library, but we could all incrementally contribute to something like this, which I think would be really sweet. Is anyone into this idea? syncing computers with OSC

Hi, chuck newbie here. I am wondering what the best way to get sample accurate sync between two laptops. I have tried using http://music.princeton.edu/~dan/plork/autosocket_chuck.zip but the two computers receive the 16th beats at slightly off times. I also have tried sending an osc message every sample or 100 samples but that completely bogs down the machine. Is the solution to have one machine do all the audio and another just send program changes? Thanks, James

Parallel Shreds

Hi, I'm just curious as to how parallel chuck's processing actually is? I've read in the ICMC2003 paper that "ChucK is a concurrent language, which allows multiple independent paths of computation to be executed in parallel." That implies (to my ear anyway) that ChucK allows each shred to run on it's own processor core in a multi-core processor. Is this the case, or is it merely an 'illusion of parallelism' whereby the parallel processing is merely a higher-level construct of shreds advancing time on their own accord in the VM? Hi I'm trying to make my huge live-thingy run under 1.2.1.2. I've narrowed the first problem down to the following code, that runs fine in 1.2.1.1b but segfaults in 1.2.1.2. a bit about my chuck live system

Hi I posted this deep in the "this doesn't work" thread, thought it might be better to start a new topic. This is in response to those who expressed interest in discussing home-brewn chuck live systems, so here follows a short description of mine. First I must tell a little bit about the kind of music that I'm doing in this particular project. It's obviously electronic, but not very loop based. Although it's not pop it uses to some extend the pop forms like intro, verse, chorus. Also it has chord changes like a pop song, and those changes might be different for each song part. And finally it involves a double bass player and a singer (besides me and a vj). Maybe it's time for some music. These are the first two tracks of the first concert with chuck. They might be representative of what I do live, something algorithmic, something prepared, something weird (for the regular listener) and something poppy. Notes 1) The thing blowing up between tracks is my micron, 2) the muddy sound on the vocals should be better next time, 3) besides the vocal the bass and the blow-up in the transition everything is chuck. http://atte.dk/download/01_train.mp3 http://atte.dk/download/02_holde_pkt.mp3 One of my main motivations was to be able to make something that is flexible like a real band. I want to be able to jam with it, take the dynamics down, repeat a part, stay on a part, and play solo (either with synth, game pad or melodica) over it. With this small band I soon felt it would be a waste of my hands and mind to simply play any single part unless it would be possible to modulate the whole piece dramatically with that specific part. In stead my role is to modulate the whole "band", kind of like a director, deciding in real time which part comes next, taking certain instruments out and controlling the music in more general terms. Everything is controlled from a bcr2000, and I play a little on a keyboard and a game pad. So my system lets me program "patterns" like a synth part, or a drums part, each of which is a single .ck file. They have a degree of either randomness to them or are actual algorithms that spin out eternal variations. Each of them "listens" to the settings of various knobs like dynamic (how loud to play), height (chose notes in either lower or higher register), length (play short or long notes) and activity (play less or more). Each part goes into an eight channel mixer with delay (with controllable delay time and feedback) and a controllable filter. I make some abstractions on time (this was where my segfault occurred), like: Time.wait(4); which means "wait for the next quarter-note" or if(Time.sub(8)%2 == 1) which means "if we're now on one of one-and, two-and etc. Basically the system works very well, but it takes practice. Not only can it be tricky to actually press the right button at the right moment, but it demands alot to be able to shape an eight minute piece from beginning to end with a satisfying structure and a natural climax not only so that the piece itself comes out right but also so that it fits within the entire set, which lasted about 50 minutes (next gig will have more new songs, so we're doing two sets of about 35-40 minutes). I hope this gives you an idea of what I do and why. Of course this explanation leaves out a lot of details, and the systems does a bit more here and there, but that's basically it... -- Atte http://atte.dk http://modlys.dk

parent and children classes

Dear chucklist, I have a question regarding parent and children classes. I'm building a patch with operators that may have one or anoother user defined envelope (i.e. gaussian like, percussive like, etc.). I want to avoid to have to define each operator with 4 different envelopes and then connect-disconnect-reconnect. What I would like is to define a parent class EnvelopeClass from which the rest can inherit. I remember from the past that in chuck inheritance is not very "handy", so if children have different functions or members than its base class, these cannot be accessed. Does anybody have good recommendations to this problem? So the idea is: EnvelopeClass -> this is the base class GaussEnvelope -> children class that inherits from EnvelopeClass PercussiveEnvelope-> children class that inherits from EnvelopeClass now I'd like to have class Operator { SinOsc s; EnvelopeClass @ env; } and be able to assign different envelope types and be able to access their members. Maybe the example at the bottoom of the email is more explanatory. Operator op; GaussianEnvelope gaussEnv @=> op.env; Operator op2; PercussiveEnvelope percEnv @=> op2.env; and even later be able to change the type of the envelope for any operator: GaussianEnvelope gaussEnv2 @=> op2.env; From what I remember, the trick would be that parent and children classes have EXACTLY the same member vars and functions although the implementation contained in it may differ. Communicating with external processes

Hi all, What are the ways to communicate between ChucK and external programs? Specifically, my code has a lot of parameters to adjust in real time, and a GUI would be a nice way to do that. I could put the GUI together in PD or Cocoa, but how can I transmit the data to ChucK? The two ways I have found to receive external data are MIDI and OSC. MIDI control changes can be a little coarse in terms of resolution (even with 14-bit values), and for most programs it'll need some sort of loopback driver to handle the routing. OSC seems closer to a generic way of interchanging data, but it looks like I would have to spork a different thread for each parameter I want to receive (since they'd have different addresses), and that I can only receive one value per OSC event. If I wanted, say, to receive 3 floats as part of one message, is there a way to do that? Is there a way to read directly from a pipe to another process? I'm thinking of a setup where an event is signaled when new data is available at the input. Any other thoughts on how to approach this task? Thanks much, Andrew P.S. Get the value of an Envelope

I've got some flawed code here, and that's because I'm stuck. I want to dynamically change Gen17's coefficients using an Envelope to get a smooth sample-rate transition, but I can't figure out how to use the last value from an Envelope and put it into the array to assign to cheb.coefs. How would I do this? Would I need a sample rate for() control? Thanks. best way to read from HID device

Hi everyone, I'm running chuck under linux and I want to play sounds using a plastic drum pad USB HID device. Here is an article with the technical details I have assembled so far: http://www.organicdesign.co.nz/USB_human_interface_devices_with_Linux I can read data from the /dev device and this data seems to be giving correct drum hit information. The hardware appears as a HID device but i've been unable to get the chuck joystick functions to use it. I thought perhaps I could use file IO to read blocks from the device and trigger sounds from that, but I can't see how you might achieve this in chuck. I have found a small C program that reads the usb device and translates this into JACK MIDI signals but this does not seem to be a good match for chuck. Another idea was to modify this program to send OSC messages instead of JACK messages, and feed into chuck that way. Any suggestions, tricks or hacks most welcome. Rob

Sorry, list, no chemicals here. I just couldn't resist the title. Last night I was answering a question on the forum that involved the constant "e". To get e in chuck we go; Math.e => float value; However to get pi we go simply; pi => float another_value; This isn't exactly a major issue, compared to some of the other issues that we have but it does strike me as somewhat inconsistent. Is there a good reason for this? If not should we consider making this consistent, for example by stuffing pi in the Math library as well? Yours, Kas.

In particular, I'm responsible for the live coding workshop which will take place in the "espace ladda" right next to the artcenter. There will be 3 days of intense workshopping, collaboration, battles, but the format will be completely open. Space to seat about 10-13, 2 vid projectors, big mixing desk, enough audio cables to strangle a cabbage (I'm a cat lover), headphone splitters + headphones so people can listen in on you / spy / steal your best ideas in true open source sense. Hi, me again, Here is what my test user had to say about the keyboard: Again, the letters and numbers weren't working properly. (I do have a standard American Qwerty keyboard.) No letters work at all, neither does the space bar, and the numbers are 2 off of what they say to be. In other words, 1 and 2 have no response and hitting 3 brings up the minor pentatonic scale game, and so on and so fourth all the way up to 0 and -. Not sure why this would happen, but at least it worked. This is typical of what I get from users trying out Guitar Zero, but it's always different. Not sure what to do, try message.ascii()? Hi Kassen, Thanks for your comments! Actually, yes I do have such an example, specifically the number keys (the ones above the keyboard). On British and Belgian keyboards the number keys return completely different message.which() codes. The Belgian keyboard is particularly tricky as it's number keys are all replaced with special French characters. So when I made a numeric menu, my Belgian friend couldn't work the program. He eventually played around with it and found that some of the letter keys gave numeric codes, and gained access into the program that way. Also the British numbers didn't work, and I haven't had a German user yet but I expect a similar problem. So I made number / letter combinations for the menu like 1 or a, 2 or b, 3 or c, etc. and that helped a lot, but still there are problems. When we get cross-platform MAUI, I'll make the program graphical again and that will solve the keyboard issue, but I really do think it is something that is not quite kosher. I mean, after all we want our ChucK programs to work in the UK and Belgium, right? :) Maybe I should use message.ascii(), do you think that would solve it? Maybe that's *why* message.ascii() exists? Guitar Zero

Hello fellow ChucKists! I may have spoken about Guitar Zero on the list before. The program is an interactive ChucK program for practicing guitar. I have made major updates to it, so if you are interested you can get the source here: http://www.freedomodds.com/music/chuck/GuitarZeroText31.ck The way it works is that first you get a menu with a little bit of fun ASCII art on it, and you select an option that will determine what quiz game you get. Let's say you choose random notes. Guitar Zero will print a guitar fretboard with the notes labeled and one of those notes will be highlighted with a box of text. You play that note and Guitar Zero will actually recognize it using comb filters made with the magic of ChucK! If you play the right note Guitar Zero beeps and you get another note. The program keeps track of how fast you play, then at some point you type spacebar or "z" to exit and you get an exit screen with a performance summary. I should also mention that Guitar Zero accepts input from the line-in jack or from a soundcard. The microphone does not work all that well in testing. I am testing this program with some forum members of the www.justinguitar.com community. JustinGuitar is a site that offers free guitar lessons via youtube video, and really good ones too, all done by a guy named Justin in Australia. He accepts donations and that enables him to expand the site, offering 100 free videos and now he travels the world playing and teaching guitar. Enough about that. Anyway, the test users are international and the main problem they have with ChucK and Guitar Zero is the keyboard. It seems that international keyboards such as a British or Belgian or German keyboard are handled improperly by ChucK and they can't use the menu options properly. I am writing about that little problem so that maybe the DEV team will notice and perhaps look into it (hah, as if they were not busy already). Anyway, it's a minor issue because if I recall correctly from Ge's holiday email, ChucK will soon have... *** CROSS PLATFORM MAUI **** and also *** FILE I/O *** Wow! That is amazing news, as it is just the thing for Guitar Zero which is turning into it's own little application for guitarists. I just exchanged some forum messages with one of the forum admins and he has suggested creating some sort of abstraction layer in which chord construction can be done and also in which scales can be represented, among other guitarish things. I feel that file I/O will greatly enhance Guitar Zero, enabling input files that store such an abstraction layer without having to embed it in the code. Also Guitar Zero can play songs, or rather prompt the user to play songs, and these songs can be stored in text files. In addition it is desirable to store calibration data for each user's guitar so that proper signal recognition can occur. So here's three cheers to Ge and his code-wizard DEV team members for providing all of us with such a great upgrade to ChucK. OK, I'll close now, I've rambled on enough. I'm trying to code a little "live coding" app (python+gtk+glade), much like the miniAudicle, but interfacing with ChucK through shell commands (like chuck-mode for emacs). So I wondered whether it's possible to get information on the running chuck process. In the simplest form, I would like to get the output of the "chuck --status" command. That command now lets the VM write on its stdout; not on the stdout of the calling process. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Problem with reverb and multi-voices

I'm sure there's an easy way to do this, but I'm out of practice. Trying to warm myself back up before the Max5-compatible chuck~ is ready. I'll attach my code, but the basic problem is that if I hit the SMS twice, the smack spork will change the reverb and gain levels for everything, so that I can't layer voices with different settings. Is there a better way to organize this? Probably. The y-hit is supposed to change the g.gain, while the x-hit changes the rev.mix. Just an experiment with the SMS to impress my friends (they're easily impressed). Thanks all, Andrew ps: is it possible to switch subscription from digest to regular list-serve? Thanks.
