chuck ide plans / ideas

Hello List, i was using chuck very much in the last few month.. and - as you all know - you always want to have some extra features (that are sometimes very special), some stuff that fits exactly to your needs.. So i decided to start an own Project, an alternative chuck environment.. mainly to have the features of my dreams. anyway, as some other people might be interested, i would like to introduce and describe this project here, and would love to hear what others think about those ideas/plans. actually they are more than plans by now, as maybe 50-60% is already finished for a first basic usable version... the main components are of course basic stuff like a source editor with add/replace/remove shred functions or a lists of the sporked shreads. (Nothing you cant do with mini audicle so far..) There will be no direct connection between the programm and chuck. once chuck is started, all interaction will be done using osc messages - start/stop shreds, keeping the list of running shreds etc.. then there are these special features - very often I do pattern-oriented / loop based stuff when i use chuck. my intention is to create some helping features for that. for example i want to have something like code plugins - a feature that writes some code for you.. mainly they should assist you in tasks that are very basic and can be used in many situations, but need a lot of code writing or are bad to handle.. Its hard to explain in general, so look one example: I often create patterns or sequences using array data. so some typical chuck code looks like this: BlitSaw osc => LPF filt => dac; [ 44, 54, 44, 54, 54] @=> int note; [ 0.5, 0.5, 0,5, 0.25, 0.25] @=> float length; [8000, 12000, 8000, 12000, 12000] @=> float freq; int actual = 0; while(1) { playnote (note[actual], length[actual], freq[actual]); actuall ++; // if (actual > 5) 0 => actual; .. and so on... } this plays a simple little sequence.. Now what i like to do is create a 'Table' or 'Array' Plugin. It will have a user interface that provides a table (like for example in excel) where you can enter your data. The table (columns etc) can be defined by the user - in this case i would create a table with 3 columns, like this: ----------------------------------------- | note | length | freq | ----------------------------------------- | 44 | 0.5 | 8000 | ----------------------------------------- | 54 | 0.5 | 12000 | ----------------------------------------- | 44 | 0.5 | 8000 | ----------------------------------------- | 54 | 0.25 | 12000 | ----------------------------------------- | 54 | 0.25 | 12000 | ----------------------------------------- so you can enter your values in a more easy and comfortable way.. extra features like select multiple cells / copy and paste etc. would make life much easier.. when sporking that file, the plugin will write code that creates the arrays to your file.. the plugin could also write some additional code that creates for example an osc receiver with an array updating function.. so while the shred is running, and you change the value of a cell, the plugin sends an update osc message to the shred, which updates the changed array element immediately.. so you change sequences (or anything that uses data stored in arrays) without stopping or replacing the shred.. (all that done by the pugin, you just have to create a table, enter data, and user that data in your code). Also, you can do it the other direction: if you update array elements using a function that sends a osc message back to the program (provided the plugin ) the table will be updated.. One way to keep / store data generated from within chuck.. i know some people asked about sth like that.. Just one of many ideas.. besides those plugins there will be some other basic components like a file browser, with sample preview function (as i also often use samples) the preview function would do nothing more than create some code like: sndbuf buf => dac; "mysample.wav" => buf.read; buf.length => now; then the plugin would write that code to a temporary file and sporks it.. So many stuff could be done which are very easy to implement, by just generating some code and let chuck do the work :-) As the Program mainly consists of UI stuff and no realtime / time critical stuff is needed, it is written in .Net, i know some people will not like that but it is perfect for those tasks.. And if some other people using linux or osx are interested, let me know, then i would keep in mind to only use parts of the framework that are impelementes in mono too, which i didn't look after so far.. I really would love to hear some opinions about the ideas.. and i hope i can come up with a first version soon.. -- tazumi

Trouble with sequencer.ck

I've found a simple sequencer at chuck wiki (http://wiki.cs.princeton.edu/index.php/ChucK/sequencer.ck) but when i try execute it, the console show: sequencer.ck]:line(9): cannot declare static non-primitive objects (yet)... Hello list, my first posting, I am not so much a musician as rather interested in hoe our digital technology advances. ChucK caught my attention with its interesting mixture between programming and creativity. For now I came as far as downloading some .ck files. I liked the "In C" file from the soupkitchen forum (unfortunately offline atm so I cannot link). I would like to generate this piece on a soundcard-less server, preferably without my intervention (via cron). I found the '--silent' option to suppress audio output and a file rec-auto.ck to record into a wav file. But that way the recording-to-file doesn't stop, it keep growing bigger. I also could not find anything in the docs. So what is a good, reliable way to create music files? > I want my computer to create a file every other week and use it as an alarm clock in the morning. ;) Any pointers welcome. -- Chris

Bulk handling of multiple instances

Dear chuck-community, My name is kar,I am a freshly converted Chukee from Vienna, Austria, Europe. Let me first thank and praise the authors of this language, the community (I went thru the WIKI, the forum and the Archives of this list), and the relaxed as well as funny and intelligent integration of wisdom in the comments and the code…. My first question is: I want to create MANY instances of a UGEN, e.g. a Blit, and route all those (lets say 20) thru their own pan2. each should be instaneated, modulated and mixed independently to the total mix. So I tried many ways to automatically create 20 Blits via Arrays, or to access in a loop the frequency of all the Blits, but so far without success. I do not want to write endless lines of code, where I manipulate each instances separately, but I thought I can write a function with an increment to do this in a loop over all the instances. I would need something like a conceniation of strings, to have the "body" of a string the same, and add a variable to it to create the effective name of an instance or access the member of an instance: //gain g=>dac; //for (0=>int i; i<=20; i++) {Blit "b+i" => g;} Where i would be a running number, or a string from an array. But it seems there are no mechanisms for stitching together names… I tried many variants of notation to combine the letter b with a number out of a variable to create a valid name... I also tried the following variant via an array of strings with no success: //gain g=>dac; //["b1","b2","b3","b4","b5","b6", "b7","b8", "b9", "b10"] @=> string arr[]; //for (0=>int j; j<10; j++) {Blit arr[j] =>g;} //for (0=>int j; j<10; j++) {0.0001=>arr[j].freq;} //for (0=>int j; j<10; j++) {1=>arr[j].harmonics;} Is there a way to do this? zombie GUI server

hi As promised here it goes a widgets tookit that can be used with ChucK. We decided to call it Zombie GUI server, as it can be taken control from ChucK (and soon supercollider hopefully). You might want to use the source zombie.py but then you need the following dependencies: wxpython, simpleOSC There are two ways to use it, the first is to work with python extending the zombie.py class source, this is probably the easier way as the code is really minimal and there is no need to know python, check python_example.py for details. The second way to use it is from ChucK (using both the standalone or the source). This is a bit more complex but not much more really. We provide a set of classes that make life easier to communicate to the server from ChucK. Check the chuck_basic.ck example. Note that most of the file is the class provided that talks to the python server, there is only need to change the bottom part of the file. I am not sure if this is the best way to organise the code in ChucK. I tried to hide all the code into another file so that we end up a very simple file that contains only the stuff needed to edit and the rest is in another file, but there are few things in current ChucK that prevented me from doing this. On the one hand it is only possible to have one public class per file, on the other hand there is no import or include yet implemented. It would be great to have some system like supercollider has to put all the user defined classes on a folder like libraries. So if anyone finds a better way to organise the code on the chuck example we would be very happy to change them. Next step are to make it compatible with supercollider and to add more flexibility to the system. Please check the readme.txt file for more details on the API and more documentation like how to create standalone applications etc... Please let us know of any problems or experiences using this. We hope this helps developing GUIs for ChucK. enrike

Hi list, Contrary to what I thought ChucK's midi out can be used to send messages of lengths other then 3 bytes. ------------------ MidiOut mout; MidiMsg msg; mout.open(0); //refers to a program change on the first channel //add to it for following channels 192 => msg.data1; //refers to the program to be loaded 4 => msg.data2; mout.send(msg); ---------------- This should load the 5th program of the current bank on channel 1. " msg.data3" can be left blank or set to 0. Strictly speaking it could probably be loads of things because program change only has a single status byte but I imagine there would be issues if it would be set to -say- 144 so let's not push our luck. This was previously unclear to me and the documentation doesn't cover it so it might be usefull to others as well. Loading programs manually isn't the most expressive of musical gestures, after all... Yours, Kas.

Using Monome 40h with ChucK

I just got one of the monome 40h control units and have been fighting with it in Max/MSp to do even fairly simple things. Max gives you lots of free audio processing, but it's a real pig for logic. Anyway, I thought that since ChucK supports OSC, I might as well fire up a miniaudicle and put together a simple ChucK script that can do something interesting with the 40h. What I ended up writing was a following x-y pad emulator for the monome that moves the control position across the plate in response to pressing of buttons and then returns to the center if left alone. Adding MIDI or other sending support to this would be trvial. Do any ChucK users out there have a, or have access to a 40h? The code for my first crude hack is at http://www.rattus.net/~packrat/audio/ChucK/monome/files/follow-40h.ck And I'll no doubt be working with that more over the next few days. Compiling for Gumstix

Hello I am in the process of attempting a compilation of Chuck for the Gumstix platform (Linux). My question is this: If I am able to successfully cross-compile Chuck, will I also need to have any of Chuck's dependencies on the target platform (or are they just used in the compilation process)? hi i am getting this error when running some of the examples on my thinkpad x24, with the built in sound card. I am using Debian unstable with fluxbox. I compiled ChucK from source couple of weeks ago. [chuck]: (via rtaudio): no devices found for given stream parameters: ... RtApiAlsa: pcm device (hw:I82801CAICH3,0) won't open: Device or resource busy. ... RtApiAlsa: pcm device (hw:I82801CAICH3,1) won't open: No such file or directory. [chuck]: cannot initialize audio device (try using --silent/-s) any ideas? I am not running any other sound device as far as i can see but i dont know much on audio and linux. thanks enrike

Hi List, hello to everybody.. i am new to this list.. i have got a question about sending strings with the osc class.. ist this possible? The manual says that the osc object has 2 member functions (addInt / addFloat).. so is there a way to send (or revieve) other data types? another question is about System Information from within chuck.. are there functions that for example return information about all available midi ports - as a list, an array or something similar? (like the VM option --probe) Currently i am working on a kind of chuck user interface.. i want the UI and chuck to communicate over OSC - so a way to get Information about the current Environment (from within chuck and send them to the UI) would really be great... thanks -- tazumi

User Action Capturing

Hey Ge, Let's say I'm using a program like joy-noise.ck (under chuck/examples/hid), and I want to capture the input from the controller for later use, or looping, or whatever. Is there a way to do this in Chuck? If not, can Chuck write control data (midi note integers, joystick positions, etc.) to a .txt file, then read from the file later? I see the following functions in the Chuck manual, for SndBuf: .read - (string, WRITE only) - loads file for reading .chunks - (int, READ/WRITE) - size of chunk (# of frames) to read on-demand; 0 implies entire file, default; must be set before reading to take effect. .write - (string, WRITE only) - loads a file for writing (or not) .pos - (int, READ/WRITE) - set position (0 <p <.samples) .valueAt - (int, READ only) - returns the value at sample index .loop - (int, READ/WRITE) - toggle looping .interp - (int, READ/WRITE) - set interpolation (0=drop, 1=linear, 2=sinc) .rate - (float, READ/WRITE) - playback rate (relative to the file's natural speed) .play - (float, READ/WRITE) - play (same as rate) .freq - (float, READ/WRITE) - playback rate (file loops/second) .phase - (float, READ/WRITE) - set phase position (0-1) .channel - (int, READ/WRITE) - select channel (0 <x <.channels) .phaseOffset - (float, READ/WRITE) - set a phase offset .samples - (int, READ only) - fetch number of samples .length - (float, READ only) - fetch length in seconds .channels - (int, READ only) - fetch number of channels I am now trying to use the .valueAt function, but am getting errors. The program is something like.... SndBuf a ; ...etc I read a soundfile into sndbuf a and play it - that much works.... int samp_pos ; float samp_val ; for (0 => int j ; j < 10000 ; j++) { j => a.pos ; j => samp_pos ; a.valueAt() => samp_val ; // <<<a.pos() >>> ; // <<< samp_pos, samp_val >>> ; } Here's the error message: [trigplay2calc.ck]:line(151): arguments type(s) do not match: [trigplay2calc.ck]:line(151): ... for function 'SndBuf.valueAt(...)' ... [trigplay2calc.ck]:line(151): ...(please check the argument types) When I change the type of samp_val to int, I get the same message. When I leave out the parentheses, it complains that it's a function. Does the .valueAt function work? Thank you! -Laurie

figuring out what causes a crash

Hi While playing with my setup tonight chuck crashed (seg fault) on me a couple of times, and I'm very interested in finding out why. Instead of crawling through my 18000+ lines of chuck code I'd like chuck to be a little more outspoken when it crashes. Now it just gives me the line where I call chuck from a bash startup script. I tried the verbose setting, and although I haven't made it crash yet, I don't really need all the debugging info when running, so I suspect I'm looking for something slightly different. Is there anything I can do (a hack in the source, a switch I should try, any suggestions) to investigate a bit further?
