This is a shot-in-the-dark... At the last minute, the person who was responsible for doing the sound with a Kyma system, couldn't get it to trigger sounds with MIDI (for some reason or another) and I'm stepping up and doing the whole show with pre-recorded material in ChucK. (I know, I know -- I'm crazy.) It's 9:25am here on the East Coast of the U.S. We're onstage at 2pm and 8pm. I have a script that receives OSC messages from a Java program. The messages contain the string name of a file to play. It's a simple stereo file (I'm already working with a very kludgy way of playing stereo files--loading it twice into two buffers). But every time I spawn a new thread, the file loads from disk and there's an audible click, or drop in audio. Now, I know that one way around this is to pre-load all the files into SndBuf objects and then trigger them to play using Events. The only trouble is that there are 73 files for this piece and some of them are pretty large. I'm afraid of eating all my RAM / bringing everything to a grinding halt. I'm posting my entire script at the end of the email. If anyone has any thoughts, please send them along. Otherwise, we'll just deal with the way things are. Definitely look into doing the block load option, because ChucK won't execute the next line (or compute audio) until the whole file is loaded into the SndBuf. That being said, I've fixed this many a time by loading the files once and getting them into the cache. You can make a dummy .ck file that just loads all those files into SndBufs, then returns. Run that first and then run your program. Clicks might go away. But if they're too big, then this won't work because there will be cache misses and you'll be back to disk seeks. PRC

LiSa looplength difference [bug?]

Hi list, dear Dan, Stephan just asked a question on the forum here; http://electro-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=269941#269941 I investigated some more and it turns out that when LiSa's loopEnd is also the .duration() the resultant loop will be off by one sample for playback but not for recording. Correct behaviour can be had by setting the duration more generously and the loopEnd explicitly (give or take floating point rounding that doesn't seem to carry). I'm not sure this is correct behaviour; I'd expect playback and recording to work in the same way here. If you, Dan, would have a moment, could you see whether you can confirm this behaviour and see whether this is a issue? Yours, Kas.

ChucK highlight script for SciTE

Hello All, I have found "highlight scripts" (or whatever we call them) for VIM and for JEdit on the web page, but I'd like to stick to SciTE, which I like the most. However, it does not seem to know ChucK... Does anyone have a SciTE .properties file for ChucK or should I make one? BTW, selecting "Java" as the language highlights keywords quite well. Problem with miniAudicle/ubuntu 9.10/jack

Hi I just installed ubuntu 9.10 and having a bit of trouble with miniAudicle (chuck seems to work just fine) running under jack (alsa works). When I start miniAudicle I get a dialog saying: The Virtual Machine appears to be hanging. This is typically caused by a shred running in an infinite loop, or it may simply be a shred performing a finite amount of heavy processing. If you would like to abort the current shred and unhang the virtual machine, click "Yes." To leave the current shred running, click "No." If you choose to leave the current shred running, execution of on-the-fly programming commands may be delayed. Would you like to abort the current shred? More over the "running time" is shown as 4259175902:4294967288. Any idea what could be the problem? multiple voices in LiSa

Hello all, I've looked at the mailing list archives, and it seems that there's no way to send different LiSa voices to separate UGens. I'm wondering if this is still the case, and if so, if there are any work-arounds that are likely to work in real time. Thanks, Jon

I already have libasound2 v1.0.13-2 installed on my machine (although I don't know if it's really installed correctly and working). Do I need to install the 'dev' version of the library to use the ALSA version of Chuck? Or is the version I have too old? David.

When you say that sometimes they aren't so good about releasing ports, do you mean even after quitting mA, its ghost may still be blocking the port? Is there a way to flush the ports without shutting down the machine and rebooting? (Because sometimes that seems like the only thing that works.) Hi!
