Hello list! Just picked up a Roland Fantom XR, and I'm anxious to play around with it. Mentioned a few days/weeks/months ago on the list is Bruce Murphy's MIDI stuff for ChucK located here: http://www.rattus.net/~packrat/audio/ChucK/ (I think this was mentioned by Kassen...) How do I go about making this work? Can someone give me a basic tutorial as to how to integrate this into my ChucK environment? .set() in example adsr.ck

.set doesn't seem to be in the manual.pdf but thanks to the example adsr.ck i found it super useful when setting up things all at once and am wondering which parameter of ADSR it takes care of am using something like: sun_adsrs[n].set( 10::ms, 30::ms, .3, 5::ms); but before that was trying something like this (which didn't work ... i remember): sun_adsrs[n].attackTime(5::ms); sun_adsrs[n].attackRate(1.0); sun_adsrs[n].decayTime(30::ms); sun_adsrs[n].decayRate(.3); sun_adsrs[n].sustainLevel(.1); sun_adsrs[n].releaseTime(5::ms); sun_adsrs[n].releaseRate(0.0); there seems to be a lot of parameter over there in ADSR but don't see any comma in .set() to ignore(?) those tia -- 2g http://micro.ispretty.com

KBHit on a macbook and some general questions

Hi Chuckers i came across chuck and i am just checking it out. I was a PD-User for a while, and i have some questions. One is very practical and another is more general. I am on a Macbook using miniaudicle, for some reason KBHit does not produse any output. I am sure this was asked before, but i did not find it on the lists, any suggestions ?? How is chuck compared to Supercollider ? Would you say it has a Performance-advantage compared to Supercollider ? Thanks for now Bye Luigi

Chuck and Grad School

Hi folks, At the risk of being slightly off-topic, I wanted to write to the community to say that I'm taking a class right now on interactive sound at ITP (itp.nyu.edu) and I will be trying to do as many of the exercises as I can using Chuck. There is a strong Max/MSP contingent here and it seems not that many people had heard of or used Chuck much--this surprised me. I would really like to introduce this crowd to Chuck; one, because this group is a very pioneering in the field of interactive media and, two, because I'm very much a believer in Chuck and it's paradigm. Part of the class requirements is going to be keep an audio sketchbook and there will be an associated website for each of the students. Once it's set up, I will send out the link so that the community (especially newbies like me) can benefit from some vaguely structured example set. The agenda for the class is generally an introduction to electronic sound (historically and conceptually). I hope to lay some groundwork both for further adoption as a platform here at ITP as well as some resource building for the Chuck community. I hope it pans out. (As an after-thought, it occurs to me that I may have classmates out there on this list. Speak up!) Cheers, Michael

spork ~ { } => big crash.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not. Whether it supposed to work or not, I'm guessing that it shouldn't crash. Found in: miniaudicle 0.1.3.7. This works: spork ~ DelayedNoteOff(duration); This causes a crash. (In fact, anything with a { } following "spork ~" crashes.: fun void Play(float note, float velocity, Dur duration) { .... spork ~ { duration => now; instr.noteOff(0.6); } } Trying to execute any ensemble that includes this fragment causes miniaudicle to exit with a fatal error. If it's a bug, and if there's a bug tracking system, let me know, and I'll log full and exact details. The language spec is ambiguous about whether this is legal or not. But I could have sworn that this worked in previous builds (if for no other reason than that I liked the idea so much that I was tempted to swipe the idea for a language of my own). Feature Request/Clarification?

Hi, I am a little confused about the me.args() functions that are available. It appears that you can pass arguments to shreds during instantiation. What about types? Is the data implicitly passed? Is it only primitive types that we should be passing here? I am assuming passing arrays would cause a massive ChucK boom? What about passing arguments to a currently running shred? I am using * as an imaginary operator that tells ChucK to pass arguments to running shreds. chuck * 1:foo This feature would be endlessly useful. I would like to write something like this: SinOsc s => dac; 440. => s.freq; true => bool keeplooping; while (keeplooping = true){ if( me.argHasMessage(0) ){ keeplooping=me.arg(0); } } Then you could do something like this: chuck * 1:false A related feature would be to declare types and max numbers of arguments for the shred. That way if a passed value violated these declarations the compiler would throw an error and we could begin the search, lest we err. Any light that can be shed on the topic of command line arguments would be greatly appreciated. The only docs appear to be on the web and not in the manual. Hey Jochen, Std.rand() gives you a random int. Std.rand2(int min, int max) gives you an int between min and max. When I changed rand() to rand2() everything worked just fine for me. Eduard's solution is nice because he just sidestepped the casting. Also, notice that he disconnects the ugen with the unchuck operator. Nice form. (casting) in chuck?

Hi, I am total newbie to chucK. been trying to make time to play with it more ever since last year but somehow that time didnt arrive until now. So for today's silly question I was wondering if there is some kind of implicit casting of objects in chuck? For instance I want to fill an array with specific UGens and then randomly retrieve one like so: //array of UGens UGen items[2]; SinOsc sin @=> items[0]; SawOsc saw @=> items[1]; //later in my loop Std.rand(0,1) => int item; items[item] @=> UGen mysteryOscillator; mysteryOscillator => dac; Obviously this is not working right now and I am wondering if I am doing something wrong syntactically or whether I am trying to do something that ChucK can't do. thanks for the help ! best - j

Hmmmmmm, we seem to have another bug. The code pasted below (intended to be saved as "xfade.ck") is intended to set up a small patch, then reload itself (hopefully in edited form) in a crossfading manner every time the "end" key is pressed. As far as I can see it's syntactically correct ChucK and the parser agrees with me (both the latest and the last version will try to run this without complaints). However, uppon pressing any key the whole thing will get stuck and it will get stuck so badly that Windows only realises it's stuck as soon as I try to force it to quit. Moving the definition of the keyboard and it's message out of the class will crash the whole thing immediately for reasons unkown (namespace?). Moving the whole keyboard reader to it's own sporked shred outside of the class, then trying to use event signalling to set in the x-fade will also get the whole thing stuck. The issue isn't in the atempt to have some code Machine.add() itself as a condition either. I've been at this for a few hours now and I'd say this looks quite bad, kicking out everything that involves reading the keyboard (and making the condition time-dependant) fixes it so I suspect there is something inbetween classes and reading the keyboard profoundly wrong. For now I give up, Spencer? Ge? Kas.
