KBHit vs Hid

Hi I just discovered KBHit, and it seems to fit better with my needs than Hid. I played around with both, and think I get the difference somehow (KBHit reads through the os, Hid is raw from device, + KBHit only reads chars). sociative polydimenional arrays

Hi list, some more arrays for fun and (potential?) profit.... //this goes well; int foo[8]; 3 => foo[0]; 5 => foo["test"]; //let's make sure <<< foo[0] >>>; <<< foo["test"] >>>; //that was fun! //lets do it again in 2D! //fine int bar[3][8]; //fine 3 => bar[0][0]; //not so fine 5 => bar[0]["test"]; //we never get here <<< foo[0][0] >>>; <<< foo[0]["test"] >>>; Why is this? Is this a bug? Missing feature? Complete misunderstanding of how to combine polydimentional arrays and sociative-ness? ChucK claims foo goes out of bounds but I suspect it's either a bug or a syntax error because frankly I can't see how I could prevent 5 => bar[0]["test"]; from going out of bounds. Yours, Kas.

reseting sndbuf

hi here i am with my weekly question ;) Le t see if I explain this properly, I have few sndbuf playing. For this i am using a class that instantiates and controls a buffer and keeps the data for the buffer. It also sporks a shred that plays the sound. At some point and while the buffer is being played i need to change the start point and length of the loop played. At the moment, the buffer keeps playing until it is time to start again and it does not updates its values until the loop is executed again. I would need the buffer to acknowledge that the length has changed 'on the fly'. How could I do this? This is the method sporked by the player class to play the buffer fun void loop() { while(!paused){ //play loop again if not paused gain => buffer.gain; gpitch => buffer.rate; pos => buffer.pos; pan => p.pan; length::samp => now; } } If I understand well, this line length::samp => now; means that until the lenght time has passed the while wont loop again. So i would need some way to detect the current pos of the buffer then stop that sound and restart again the while with the new values at the pos where the sound was at the moment of the change. I am not sure about how to to this or if this is the right way to do it. any tips? thanks enrike

running chuck as a process with no terminal?

hi i am launching chuck from python (i have a python GUI and chuck works as sound engine). When I run chuck from python it opens a terminal, I would like to hide this. I use python os.spawnv command for this. In PD there is a startup flag -nogui that launches pd as a process with no console whatsoever, only visible via top or process list. Anything like that in ChucK? i have checked the documentation for the virtual machine but i could not see anything in this direction. Another important issue i am having is that as soon as the chuck terminal loses the focus the sound stops. So when I select the python window the sound stops. Is there any way to avoid this? I am working on xp at the moment, so i havent tested if this happens as well on linux or osx. I have very limited access to internet for a few days so i cannot search on the mailing list archive or the forum about this issue. Sorry. thanks enrike

eval and concatenating strings

hi again here i am with couple of questions again. is there a way to concatenate strings? I am trying different ways with no much luck and i have checked the docs but i could not find a way to it. another issue is: is there a way to eval a string as code like in python or actionscript? The questions come from some commands i am forced to type over and over despite of being almost identical recv.event("/0/mute, i") @=> OscEvent mute0_osc; the only difference of the number (0 in this case) for each of the sample players i have constructed Would it be possible to create variables on the fly from concatenated strings? I mean something like (in wish code) for (0 => int n; n < 8; n++){ "/" + Std.itoa(n) + "/mute, i" @=> string address; //concatenate string recv.event(address) @=> OscEvent Std.eval("mute"+ Std.itoa(n) + "_osc"); //concatenate and eval string } thanks enrike

how do you maipulate an array with rand2()?

hi i already posted this on the forums, but it doesnt seem as active as i imagine the mailing list might be(no offense of course). so here's my post hi i'm trying to access an array with rand2() but i get syntax errors: while( true ) { //1 bar at 180bpm cut into 8ths float push[ 0, 166.625, 333.25, 499.875, 666.5, 833.125, 999.75, 1166.375 ] push[Math.rand2(0,7)] => buf.pos; 1333::ms => now; } i made a second post with a minor update i noticed my syntax errors in comparison to otf_06.ck on page 49 in the manual and re-wrote it. // time loop while( true ) { //1 bar at 180bpm cut into 8ths [ 0, 166.625, 333.25, 499.875, 666.5, 833.125, 999.75, 1166.375 ]@=> float push[]; push[Math.rand2(0,7)] => buf.pos; 1333::ms => now; } but i still get this error: [SndBufTest1.ck]:line(19): array init [...] contains incompatible types... float and float[]

Hi, list, I find ChucK's reaction to the following lines rather surprising. //this works, obviously 1.0 => float foo; //this is fine with chuck as well 1 => float bar; //this works as well, also obviously [1.0] @=> float fooray[]; //then why does this cause a error? [1] @=> float barray[]; Is this intentional and if so could we considder a more readable error? Right now this last line gives a error that looks (to me) like the dimentions of a multi-dimentional array don't add up which is a bit confusing Yours, Kas.

--bufsize on Win (is fine?!!)

Hi, list. I just noticed that these days we can actually set the --bufsize on Windows without (unwanted) noises or complaints. That wouldn't be reason for a post but I can't remember any anouncement about this fix. Is this perhaps a side effect of the resent clean-up spree and if so does that mean we are now closer to getting DAC channels above two working? Just curious, three cheers for unexpected low latency! hi here i am again with a couple of questions : A : is it possible to quit Chuck from Chuck? I need to quit chuck when a certain osc message arrives, and i was wondering if there is a command to do this. B: can i store references to functions in variables? similar to the python: def myfunc(): dowhatever myvar = myfunc myvar() thanks! enrike
