Dear list, I need to set up eight OSC receivers for passing file paths. If it's possible, I don't want to repeat eight times the same structure. So the idea is to do something like this: " path " => string F1; recv.event( "file1, s" ) @=> OscEvent @ sam1; fun void receiveString(int i) { while( true ) { sam+i => now; while( sam+i.nextMsg()) { sam+i.getString() => F+i; } } } for (0 => int i; i < 8; i++) { spork ~ receiveString(i); } This will not work, but maybe someone has an solution for this? Music perception

Here is an interesting paper on music perception, with focus on parallel movements. It can be applied, for example, nominally synchronous movements can be made to stand out more clearly if introducing small delays, 10 - 60 ms, among them. I want to have chuck read a stereo input file. The only way I've been able to process stereo is to first separate each stereo file into two mono files, then manipulate these separately with two SndBuf instances. 1. Is there another way to do this? I've tried: SndBuf s; s.chan(1) => dac.right; s.chan(0) => dac.left; This compiles fine, but crashes with null pointer exception when it is run. 2. VIrtual Audio Cable for windows? THis is software that allows you to route output of any program to input of others. WHen I install it, winamp can find and apparently use one of these virtual cables as output, however how might one get chuck to use the input side of this cable? 3. I've heard of some sort of new file io class; would that help? Thanx much... -- Rich

annoyances

Fellow ChucKists, I'm rather displeased right now, which is a bit of a euphemism for "I feel like breaking stuff". I have a issue in my sequencer that I'm sure relates to floating-point denormalisation (involving a feedback loop on a LiSa) as I have CPU spikes that occur after a while and stay present after re-starting ChucK. These are quite hard to pinpoint as they take a while to surface. Even if I would find the culprit I'd then have to see whether it still exists in the current version of ChucK because I'm running into this on the latest ASIO version that we have around, which is downright out of date. All of this is very, very frustrating, frustrating to the tune of looking for what's wrong for three days on end. It's probably fixable but it's frustrating that there is no canonical ASIO version of ChucK and that there hasn't been more attention to floating-point denormalisation. One of the main advantages over SC is that we can do sample-accurate feedback in CK, yet we throw much of that away if we risk this. There is also no Windows version out of the box that can use multi-channel audio and have acceptable latency. Both seem quite serious to me. Could something be done about this? I've been thinking about how hard it would be to port my setup to a hardware PIC or even SC. None of this should be necessary at all; a out-of-the-box ASIO version is quite reasonable and I believe that from the time denormalisation has been a issue there have been instructions to simply round to 0. Intraspection?

I want to find some way of controlling various parameters via the keyboard. The problem I'm having is that in order to write some sort of generic class that can change arbitrary UGen parameters (or really anything), one needs to know what types your dealing with. Is there a way of asking chuck what things are? For instance, I can maintain some sort of list of UGens I want to control via an array of UGens, but then when I attempt to access a parameter on one of the objects in that array, it tells me there is no such member in class UGen. THe idea is that the array would contain references to various UGens I want to manipulate, and they may be of any UGen subtype. However, in order to access any members, the compiler needs to know exactly which type each object is. Any ideas? -- Rich

LiSa "delay" in terminal ChucK vs. miniAudicle

Hi, I've written a short test script (mostly taken from LiSa examples) using LiSa to create a simple delay. Can anyone explain to me why this works just fine when I run it through miniAudicle (version 0.2.0, ChucK v: 1.2.1.3), but when I run it from the terminal, I get basically the adc fed directly to the dac, with no delay. My chuck version is 1.2.1.4-dev-1. I'm assuming that something has changed in between those revisions that modified, but I can't seem to find a document online like this one<http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/release/VERSIONS> that goes up through 1.2.1.4-dev-1. Any suggestions / recommendations for how I could get that working in the terminal? Conversion from ASCII number to string letter

Hey list, Is there a way to convert from a number to a string letter? Here's what I want: 97 => int number; <<< Std.SOMETHING(number) >>>; // console reads: "a" I know that I could create some function in chuck that just returns the ascii string value for all 128 possible numbers...but I don't especially want to. As some background, I'm hacking chuck to get the string.ch(int) method to work, in order to read in some form of notation that's not hard-wired into the code. Let me know if there's an easy way to make this work. Thanks. -Andrew

Frequency analysis using ChucK

I am an engineering (Computer Science) student and want to develop a *guitar tuning software*. The basic idea is to play a guitar string, read the sound through a microphone, *determine the frequency of the note that was played* and accordingly prompt the user to tune the string up or down. I wanted to know what capabilities ChucK provides to *analyse frequency* of the analog sound input and how it could be used in implementing the guitar tuning application. Also, are there any alternate approaches to obtain the frequency using ChucK? Regards, Sindhuri KN

Thanks, but this doesn't work: ChucK parses this OK but then fails to find the file. Machine.add("/Users/rebecca/tmp.ck") works fine. Machine.add("C\\:/Users/rebecca/tmp.ck") produces [tmp.ck] no such file or directory (And re: previous posts, thanks, but Windows does handle forward-slash-style path names fine, without any need for escape characters. Hence the forward slashes in my strings. Escaped "\\" produces same results. Should've mentioned that before.) Has anyone actually gotten this to work in practice? The source code in chuck-1.2.1.3 that processes the argument to Machine.add is expecting to parse a filename and optional arguments using colons to separate the filename and arguments, but it also looks like it's trying to allow \: to escape a colon. Have any ChucK windows users figured out how to accomplish Machine.add with a fully-qualified path name that includes the drive letter? Machine.add("C:/Users/rebecca/tmp.ck") results in error "[C]: no such file or directory" and Machine.add("C\:/Users/rebecca/tmp.ck") results in error [tmp2.ck]:line(2): unrecognized escape sequence '\:' I know you can leave off the C: entirely and it will work, but my concern is the situation where different files to be added live on different drives. Hello, some newbie questions

Hello everyone, I've been playing with chuck for a couple weeks and am having a lot of fun with it. Really cool environment and I was impressed how easy it was to set up the MIDI stuff. After reading over a lot of material though, I still couldn't answer a few questions, so I thought I'd try the list. - Is there any way to have a script load it's own dependencies? I tried Machine.add which is listed on http://github.com/heuermh/lick/wiki, but it doesn't seem to work. Here's the code I'm trying: http://gist.github.com/611486 - Similar to the last question, when I do load both of the above files into chuck at once, it seems like only the class ends up in the global space. Is there any way share raw functions or variables between files? The reason I want to do this is mostly to avoid having to do timing code like this http://gist.github.com/611515, or note definitions (cs, Cs) in every file. Something like a pre-processor include would probably do the trick. - Is there a way to pass functions as arguments to another function or return a function? Also, are fun's proper closures or am I just getting lucky? I was thinking maybe I could use functional style programming to build things like arpeggiations. If this is totally overkill let me know :) - The SinOsc seems to click whenever I stop or disconnect it. I've tried moving the gain to 0.1, then 0, but it still seems to click. Is there some technique for avoiding this? Thanks in advance for your help. Looking forward to spending more time with ChucK in the future. -Mat

hello there I would like to run chuck with more than two outputs in jack (linux). broken inheritance ?

hi. I'm facing a weird issue with inheritance. here is a bit of code : http://pastebin.com/rGFx6pus I have a Handler class that defines a listen() method, and several classes inheriting from Handler. Then, when I try to call bpm.listen(orec) on line 10, it says "class BpmHandler has no member listen" - even though it should access the one from the Handler class. Any clue ? And by the way, I was wondering: Handler @ h; new BpmHandler @=> h; this won't work, even though it is legit from a OOP inheritance point of view. is it deliberate, or something on the todo list of the dev team ? cheers tom

How to get better-sounding instruments?

Got such question: there is a set of instruments included from STK, also there are some reverbs etc., but I cant make them together do very natural sounds; I also don't want to use wav as I can't cange it's params. I do not have natural instruments to play in nor will to do so. Questions are: - Are there some good ways to connect ChucK with additional synthesizers in such way that I could get sample-by-sample output and slow down the generation of wav (with -s flag). - Are there more synthesizers built-in to ChucK. - Are there add-on modules with more instruments. - Are there examples about how to build natural sounds with those built-in oscillators and effects. As I try to get something, what would not sound too electronic or too flat. Tambet
