hello again, chuckists - I'd like to alter signal flow in response to input from HID devices. In this small example, i want mouse down to result in reverb, and mouse up to result in dry signal. Hm, happy diwali greetings from India chuckers! So. Lets say I'm shaping a curve, which is the frequency graph of a sound wave, using pygame, or some kind of GUI. So what I possibly have are two things: 1. a string of coordinates that forms the curve. 2. a parametric equation that represents the curve. What is the easiest way in ChucK, by which I can play/generate this sound in case 1) and 2). See? multichannel audio

hi all, haven't yet found an answer in the archive, but apologies in advance for the newbie question: I have a motu traveler on mac 10.4.10 and would like to use the multichannel capability. When I run the 'n.ck' example script it returns that the device has only 2 channels, and I get a NullPointerException when I try to force the issue by writing to dac.chan(2). Is there a way to help Chuck see the additional channels on my device? thanks!

hi, i wrote a small program that allows file input/output from within chuck via OSC. You find it here: http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-21276.html this software can read files only as a whole. so you have to read the whole file before the while loop and store the read values in an array whose element you use inside the while loop. its meant as a workaround until the file input/output UGens arrive in chuck. i compiled it for the mswindows (tested on WinXP/WIN2000) platform but recently it was ported to linux also. adding a chuck class from an external file

changing a value with a function

Hi I'm trying to change a value of something (in this case BPF.freq with a function. I'd like to write a function that can be sporked on just aout any value, but I can't figure out how. Below changer() works, but only works on filters freq parameter. changer2() obviously doesn't work. Can something like this be done? Could the parameter for a ugen be passed by reference? zipper noise

Hi, Sometimes I've noticed zipper noise when using Chuck. Specifically if I'm doing some sort of modulation in a loop, I'll get artifacts because I'm instantaneously setting a parameter once every 10ms or so. Ideally changing the time-length of the loop shouldn't really change the sound much (except to make longer latency), but I find that there are drastic differences between using 1::samp, 5::samp, 1::ms, 10::ms, mostly due (I think) to the frequency of these artifacts. Has anyone noticed this? What measures do you take to fix it? I'm wondering if it would be useful to be able to specify ramp times (or some global ramp time) for when you set a parameter. (Of course that would be a bit tricky to implement...) Perhaps each parameter could have a per-sample lowpass on it, but I guess that would greatly increase processing needs. How is this currently handled in Chuck? cheers, Steve

Hi I think something is not working correct in HidMsg. Running the following code and pressing "5" prints "34" but pressing "s" also prints "34" (this is with a danish keyboard, things might look different with other keyboards, I know). This may be a silly question but is it possible to read data into a chuck program from a file? Hi, List, Hi Dan! Some notes; When the length of the loop accidentally becomes 0 I got a extreme CPU load, one different from a loop that doesn't advance time, it seems, in that quiting ChucK wasn't easily done (it started "cleaning up", then got stuck) and required a kill through the task manager. I think I would suggest ignoring the command that creates this situation (either .loopStart(), or .loopEnd(), I suppose .loop() itself could also be the final straw ) and printing a warning about the situation as this situation results in a de-facto end of the VM. When using the .rampDown() command, but then starting .play() again on the same voice before the rampDown has finished the rampDown will cut the new "note" off. This may be intended behavior? Giving a .rampUp(0::ms) when starting the new note avoids this situation so it's no real issue, just unexpected to me. I'm not sure whether this is on "the list" already but I'd also appreciate "get" method for the .rate(), that way we could get the rate, multiply it by some fraction and set it again, like we can with all other pitched Ugens. (of course this can already be done by defining a extra float that keeps track of it but this isn't so elegant). Yours, Kas.

Hi, Some examples on papers 2004, like this one, http://soundlab.cs.princeton.edu/publications/on-the-fly_nime2004.pdf use things like: 100::ms +=> now; I don't understand exactly the meaning of that, but I think it should be the same as: 100::ms => now; Is that notation depreciated? Because that line is crashing ChucK, this simple program: //---------------------- <<< "now" >>>; 1::second +=> now; //---------------------- Gives a segmentation fault message (on Linux at least). Installing on 64bit Ubuntu?

Hi, I recently tried to get chuck working on my new UbuntuStudio 64bit install and I can't get it to work properly. miniaudicle - DAC

Hello, I normally use VIM and command line and not miniaudicle, so I am probably missing something. Anyway, today I downloaded the last version of miniaudicle available from the web and found that one cannot connect to DAC. SinOsc s => dac results in the following error message: ugen's of type 'DAC' have no input - cannot => from another ugen... However SinOsc => adc yields no errors. So there's no way we can get sound from miniaudicle? strange... Eduard

linux: 4 channel output

Hi I'd like to have four outputs with linux chuck. However I only have one onboard (2 channels) and an usb soundcard (2 channels). So the question is: can I use these two soundcards as a four channels device in chuck? Actually I only need dac and something like dac2 (the second soundcard). demonstrating the sampling theorem in Chuck

Hi, As a first step into the wonderful and time consuming world of DSP<=>Chuck I want to make audible the effect of disregarding the sampling theorem. So all I'm trying to do at the moment is creating a simple down-sampler without any proper filtering. As it is said in the sampling theorem this should not create any distortion as long as my new sampling rate is at least twice as high as the highest sine wave in my input signal. However, when I'm sampling down a sine wave of for example 440 Hz in Chuck, I get a lot of funny noises long before going down to a SR of 880 Hz. For example: SinOsc inputSignal; Step stepSeq; inputSignal => blackhole; stepSeq=> dac; 440 => inputSignal.freq; 0.5 => inputSignal.gain; //takin every nTh sample of the inputSignal 10 => int n; <<<"real sample rate: " + 1::second/1::samp>>>; <<<"new sample rate: " + 1::second/(1::samp*n)>>>; //duration of the output signal 1::second => dur durationOfTest; now + durationOfTest => time timeToFinish; //don't-care-about-Nyquist-downsampling while (now < timeToFinish) { inputSignal.last() => stepSeq.next; n::samp => now; } By using a common sample-rate like e.g. 44100 Hz in Chuck this should satisfy the sampling theorem. I guess the reason, why I doesn't get a nice 440-sine wave here is because I have to reconstruct the sine wave after the down sampling with the remaining samples, as the output cannot know that they are part of a proper sine wave. Is this right? If yes, could someone give me a hint how to realize something like this? Of not, what is the real problem? My target is a downsampler which for example would produce an undistorted sine wave of 440 Hz after downsampling to 880 Hz (i.e. a working demonstration of the sampling theorem) A second and a bit stupid question: As far as I understand it, it is not possible to downsample a signal with a given SR to any new SR, but only to a new SR which is = (Old SR)/N, whereas N is a simple positive number (of course after converting the new SR to integer). If anyone could give me some pointers here, I'll be grateful: I KNOW: Python (decent), Pygame (medium), ChucK (n00bie), OSC (null) ZERO KNOWLEDGE: OSC ( I have NO idea what it is, except that it may be useful for interfacing two platforms on the same computer. I know there is a Python wrapper available, but I have no idea how to use it) I WANT: chucK to speak/listen to a python script in realtime. WHAT: The GUI is a game/visualisation in Pygame. It responds visually to messages coming in from a Chuck audio set ( is one of them a "server" type thingie?) and sends back new messages which manipulate the sound. Okay, I beg your pardon in advance again...... 1. Are the MAUI modules available only for miniAudicle, and not Audicle? That would mean that one can only do this on Mac. I'm a dodo using XP. 2. Can two ChucK shreds throw data at each other in the same VM, like two Python sockets? So I could read Microphone data in RMS off one shred and throw it towards a Python GUI using another shred which is using OSC? Can two shreds talk? Dear Chuck3rz, Over the short period that I have been learning ChucK, I have been very appreciative of the support from this list, especially the open and sharing attitude of Kassen the Benevolent. I believe I will continue needing your help, but in the meantime I would be even happier if I could reciprocate these huge favors. Knowledge shared is knowledge gained, huh? I have been coding only for a short while (7 months) but I have a fairly broad range of interests - algorithms, generative startegies, AI, and mythology to name a few. I am constantly expanding my skills, though. While learning ChucK, I am keeping a private diary that might serve as a handy tutorial for future users. However, technically speaking, I can only say that I am well acquainted with the programming of Nokia S60 smartphones using Python. Just to give you an indication of the power these tiny instruments wield, the Nokia 5500 Sport has an accelerometer embedded, which can be hacked to be used as a musical interface, in a similar way I see you treating the Wiimote. The other hackable sensory organs include the cameras (two in the N70, back and front), GPS (N95), audio channels, SMS, cell tower IDs, Bluetooth, GPRS internet, and dialing programs. It is fairly simple ( I have the code) to convert your N70 into a Bluetooth remote for DJing, live composition etc. It is not too difficult to use the 5500 as a motion detecting joystick for live performance. The possibilities are many: Phone Motion>Bluetooth>ChucK + GUI In fact, I have motion detection happening on the phone via the camera(s), but the CPU is far too slow for any real application. You can play Pong with a couple of chopsticks, though. The platform is slowly opening up with deeper access to Symbian. classes / bpm?

I have two questions for the ChucK group - 1) regarding the midisender.ck file located at: http://www.rattus.net/~packrat/audio/ChucK/files/midisender.ck how do I use this in ChucK? I'm assuming that I need to drop it somewhere so it can be called by ChucK. I use ChucK on both Windows and Linux. 2) I need to be able to figure out how to handle time-based stuff using bpm. for example, if I have a song that is 80 bpm, how do I send quarter notes at that tempo? I've done some research on the 'net, and it seems that figuring this out is harder than I think it should be. considering I'm a math idiot, can someone give me some simple(r) way to do this? -- Josh Lawrence http://www.hardbop200.com
