building an instrument library

Hi I'm just beginning to explore chuck. I set out to find a way to seperate instrument definitions from note-playing-code. I wrapped up my result so far and put them here: http://www.atte.dk/download/modular_instrument_defs.tgz The README.txt explains what to do with it, but let me re-state the problems I have: 1. Removing a shread (by "chuck - SOME_ID") stops the shred in the middle of the current note, resulting in a click. 2. Since a new shread is sporked on each note, the shread ID's quickly grow to inconveniently large proportions. The reason for sporking each note is an attempt to rid the pattern of any knowledge of the time it actually takes to play the note. 3. Sometimes adding the hh.ck pattern (not the instrument) is playing the first note very loud. Of course this is heavily inspired by the otf_* files and reveals my so far very limited understanding of chuck. But eventually I think some way of seperating out instrument design (and other stuff as well; keys, scales, tempo and meter comes to mind) would benefit my productivity in the long run... I'm not at all sure that this is the way to go, so I'd appreciate any feedback. Basically: 1) I'd like to define a library of instruments for reuse. Seems like this *could* be achieved by defining one class per .ck file and adding these files (possibly by a script) to a running chuck before use. Has the disadvantage that the first zillion shreds will be taken up by instrument-def files, not too handy if a replace/remove a schred. Is there a best/better way to do this? I found no include, did I overlook something? 2) Supposed I want to do a slightly complex pitch envelope. How is that best achieved? 1.2.0.3 compilation problem

Hello all, First of all, I am glad to see that since 1.2.0.1 the linux version of chuck behaves so much nicer! A polymorphic OSC function?

Hello Chuckers. Is it possible to receive any OSC event with a single event and function? In my code I create several events like this: recv.event( "/setStep,i,i,i" ) @=> OscEvent oe; recv.event( "/setBpm,f" ) @=> OscEvent obpm; recv.event( "/openWave,i,s" ) @=> OscEvent owave; Then I spork listener threads for each one: fun void bpmListener() { while ( true ) { obpm => now; while ( obpm.nextMsg() != 0 ) { ... spork ~ bpmListener(); fun void openListener() { while ( true ) { owave => now; while ( owave.nextMsg() != 0 ) { ... spork ~ openListener(); etc. So I create an event, function and thread for every OSC message I want to receive. Is there a way to make a polymorphic function that can recieve any OSC event with some if / else statements to switch based on what the message is? Any sample code would be much appreciated. Minimal example not working.

Hi all, I'm just trying to get a minimal example going. I've currently got this: sinosc s => dac; 440. => s.freq; while(true){ 1::second => now; } When I run it I get: [chuck]: RtApi: no devices found for given stream parameters. [chuck]: cannot initialize audio device (try using --silent/-s) I compiled chuck to run using linux-alsa and I'm running it on an Apple iBook running Debian Linux. ALSA is know to work correctly on this machine. Any help appreciated. Greetings and an Object oriented question

Hail, MusicTech Ones of the Chuck persuasion. I appreciate the elegance and difficulty of the design and implementation of Chuck (being a sysProg type). Chuck is damn easy to get going and make great speed into shooting the foot manytimes. It's kind of like building airplanes out of balsa wood when I was a kid: nicks, cut fingers, noxious fumes, Glue stains on mom's kitchen table. But when your done, it FLIES! So, we know we like chuck. A good buddy. great set of OK default parameters to get you going asap. Low CPU load. Good language structure. Real-time modification to any parameter. all the good stuff. Even Objects and classes. So that's where my question comes from: (Yes it's probably in the documentation somewhere, maybe in the past or future, but I haven't found it) For example, suppose I want a class of say, two filters: Echo A and Echo B. I want to have these echo filters internal to the objects, and be able to chuck into and out of the objects. Is this possible and how does the class look? Class echoChamber { Echo a => Echo b; public fun void scrambleSomeInterestingStuff ( <some useful parameters> ) { //inside here we do some magic and then set parameters on a or b } public fun void initializeMe ( ) { //because we don't do constructors this week } //maybe something goes here } //Now we might want a structure like: Mandolin m => echoChamber smallroom => dac; So, my question is: This seems like a reasonable thing for a chuck Object to do, Can It? Envelope.time (repost)

Greetings, The docs don't say what Envelope.time (from STK) is measured in -- they just says that it's a float. From the code below, I determined that when .target is 0.5, it measures 500::ms (in other words, "2.0 => e.time" takes 1 second to reach the target); when the target is 0.25, it measures 250::ms. Is this proper behavior? I was expecting the time to be... well, more absolute. :) ie 1.0 would mean 1.0 seconds or 1.0 ms. If this _is_ prope behavior, could it be documented? BTW, the example file "sixty.ck" is missing from the 1.2 and 1.2.0.1 source tarballs. std.abs always does floats

Could std.abs detect if the variables are ints, and return an int if so? 3 => int intfoo; 2 => int intbar; std.abs(intfoo-intbar) => int foobar; result: [foo.ck]:line(3): cannot resolve operator '=>' on types 'float' and 'int'... It's not a big deal to add the $int, but it surprised me when I first encountered it. Cheers, - Graham

Since you guys are implementing neat little features so quickly, here's another -- the ability to include directories to search for patches. ie $ chuck -I ~/chucklibs/ foo.ck rec.ck This searches the current dir for foo.ck and rec.ck; if it doesn't find it, then it searches in ~/chucklibs/ This is much easier than doing $ chuck foo.ck ~/src/chuck-1.2.0.2/examples/basic/rec.ck It would also be great if chuck could get configuration details from ~/.chuckrc (such as sample rate and included directories :) Cheers, - Graham

Hi! I wanted to use ChucK to play some wave files in sequence, so I wrote a small script to read a XML file and generate the ChucK code for me. I called it "ChucKML". Here's a sample ChucKML file: <chuckml> <wave src="wav/snd1.wav" repeat_every="3::second"/> <wave src="wav/snd2.wav" start_after="12::second" repeat_every="6::second"/> <wave src="wav/snd3.wav" start_after="36::second" repeat_every="12::second"/> </chuckml> Sample usage: $ chuckml sample.xml > sample.ck $ chuck sample.ck (The first command generates a .ck file, and the second command plays it.) It would be great if ChucK could include other .ck files. I know you can do machine.add("foo.ck"), but it would be great if we could do it with non-shreds as well. For example, I could have a bunch of functions which I could then include in other projects. You can't machine.add a fun float changevalue ( float foo ) { ... return bar; } Technically speaking, whatever.include("foo.ck"); would simply insert the contents of foo.ck into the original file at the place where whatever.include() was called. Heartbeat

I was wondering if it would be possible to use ChucK to script wave files, and I found the answer in one of the "towers of annoy" example -- yes, it's possible. Here's my first ChucK program, which I called "hello_wav.ck": // the sound samples sndbuf my_sample; // load files "wav/Heartbeat Bass.wav" => my_sample.read; // set gain .5 => my_sample.gain; // play my_sample => dac; 3::second => now; It worked just fine. Now, I'd like to play the heartbeat sound "ad infinitum"... I tried this, but it doesn't work: while (1) { my_sample => dac; 3::second => now; } Any ideas?

Help with arrays?

Nobody really uses jankyteeth/soup anymore. SO i figured I'd ask here: I can still not quite figure out how to do random choice wihtout replacement... I seem to have gotten one of the ways of doing it, but need help to make it not crash the spork. Here is the actual code. After all the effects it tries to randomly select pieces out of a sound file and then plays them at random speeds, etc. so you get a very weird reconstructed sound... feed it any sound file that the soundbuf class understands. The main part I'm having trouble with is the main while(true) loop. Could someone help me out to make this thing work without crashing chuck? click here: http://urbanplexus.net/reconstructor.ck

system calls

Greetings, ChucK is awesome! I only discovered it slightly a week ago, and I'm a total convert now. I can write programs much more elegantly in chuck than I ever could in pd, and it is _such_ a pleasure to do everything in text. Dev team: you guys rock! I'm working on a chuck->lilypond[1] translator (well, a chuck program that generates lilypond code, gets lilypond to compile it, and then displays the sheet music). I was talking about this with Adam Tindale[2], and he said that ChucK could do system calls. In the source code for chuck, I saw a reference to "std.ck", which is supposed to demonstrate this, but evidently this example file was removed before 1.2 came out. Could anybody shed more light on this? [1] GNU/LilyPond is a notation program that generates beautiful music from (text) input files; I'm their Documentation Editor. http://lilypond.org [2] I'm a music undergraduate student at UVic; Adam is the TA for one of my courses. Ideally I'd like to be able to output strings to a file and run shell commands (ie "lilypond foo.ly" and "open foo.pdf" -- maybe also "ls foo.pdf" to check if lilypond has finished). I could do this in pd via the textedit and "shell" external object, but I'd much much rather use chuck. :) Cheers, - Graham Percival

No stereo WvOut?

ChucKas, I'm running 1.2.0.2-pre and trying to write to stereo WAV file like this: dac => WvOut w => blackhole; "foo.wav" => w.wavFilename; However, foo.wav gets written as a mono file. What to do? Thanks, Tyler Gillies

compiling chuck for Linux

ChucKers, I seem to be having a problem trying to compile ChucK for Linux (DeMuDi). I'm fairly certain I installed GCC and G++ correctly since the required Libsndfile library seemed to compile without any obvious complaints. However, when I type "make linux-jack" I get a reply that the command "bison" is not found. I'm not sure what to do about this or where to find "bison". I'm sure this is very stupid question but I'm a bit of Linux n00b. I tried looking in the Faq and so on but no help there. Any pointers would be greatly apreceated. Yours, Kas.

Starting a blank ChucK program - How???

Hi, I´m trying to follow the ChucK Tutorial but there´s something I miss and it is related to starting a blank ChucK program. How is it made? Should I try vi (the text editor)? I´ve tried all the examples and they run ok, but how can .ck files be created? Thank you, Paco Salas
