Hello ChucK linux users, We are excited to have a beta version of chuck that features PulseAudio support! While PulseAudio is not always ideal for professional audio usage, we absolutely recognize that its a popular choice for general-purpose Linux installations. [MiniAudicle] Minor bug with editor

Hi, I recently acquired a late 2013 Mac Book Pro running Mavericks. While working on MiniAudicle on this computer, I noticed a few problems, all bypassable, but annoying nonetheless. First of, while using non ascii characters, like ‘é’ in strings. I made a program that looks up samples, and their name is hardcoded in the script, e.g. « réso1.wav ». When I save the file for later use, and load it up again, the ‘é’ are gone, the editor displays « reso1.wav ». My files are therefore not accessed. I don’t think that is normal, as on my Windows PC, non ascii characters are accepted. Secondly, when I paste from the terminal (like a folder path), the editor uses whatever colors my terminal background is set in. I use black, so when I paste, the background of the pasted line becomes black. Lastly, here’s an error message I get from the console window. 2013-11-11 18:14:31.318 miniAudicle[662:707] *** WARNING: -[NSImage dissolveToPoint:fraction:] is deprecated in MacOSX 10.8 and later. I am a new chuck user and have just installed linux-alsa from source. All works well as long as there is no other audio source active. If there is another active audio source active I get this message when, for example, I type in chuck --loop: [chuck]: RtApiAlsa::getDeviceInfo: snd_pcm_open error for device (hw:0,0), Device or resource busy. This seems to be a chuck issue as I can run multiple audio sources as long as one of them is not chuck. My concern is that I started a coursera course on chuck and would like to use chuck concurrently with the course. My operating system is Kubuntu Linux 12.04. Does anyone have any ideas? Trouble with Machine.add() and paths on Windows; listing loaded shreds

Hi, everybody: I'm new here. I'm really intrigued with ChucK and I'm looking forward to working with it. I am having one problem. I've taken a look at the list archives, and the forum, but the fixes I've seen there haven't worked for me. If there's something there that I overlooked, I apologize. Please feel free to point me in the right direction. Basically, I'm having some trouble including the LiCK library, but my questions are more about Machine's add() method. Here's an example of what's not working: Machine.add("c:\\Program Files (x86)\\ChucK\\libs\\lib-master\\BinaryFunction.ck"); And the errors: [chuck]: unrecognized escape sequence: \P [chuck]: malformed filename with argument list... My questions: When Machine.add's argument is a relative path like this: Machine.add("BinaryFunction.ck"); or this: Machine.add("libs/BinaryFunction.ck"); what's the path relative to? What's the correct way to use absolute paths in Windows? What's the correct delimiter for paths in Windows? Is it possible to get Machine to list loaded shreds? I'm running: Windows 7 miniAudicle 1.3.0 ChucK 1.3.2.0 Thanks! Greg

miniAudicle issue

Hi there, I am trying to get miniAudicle/chuck running on my reasonably fresh install of Linux mint KDE. I have a MB with onboard Audio which is what I have plugged up to my speakers and is set as the default audio device in my system settings.. My audio works smoothly for other things such as mp3, flac and orb playback, MIDI (suck as linux MM Studio). I do not have jack installed. I went through the process of installing all of the dependancies, compiling and making the installs, though i dont know if there was an order i was meant to do it in. I have been trying to trouble shoot... I have run from the terminal ~ > lspci | grep audio 0a:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 04) ~ > chuck --version chuck version: 1.3.2.0 (chimera) linux (alsa) : 32-bit http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/ http://chuck.stanford.edu/ On initializing miniAudicle the console reads - [chuck]:(2:SYSTEM): setting log level to: 10 (ALL!!)... [chuck]: RtApiAlsa::getDeviceInfo: snd_pcm_open error for device (hw:2,2), No such device. then when i click start virtual machine the program hangs up (whether or not I have a shred in the Audicle window.) Sometimes it will give me an error message about an infinite loop, even without any shreds? I am pretty stumped right now... i have been googling but cant find anyone have the same issue. Morgan

getting started questions

I'm new to ChucK but am very excited. I have grand plans. I will likely have lots of questions (some unfortunately stupid, apologies in advance) although I have been pouring through manuals, examples, the wiki, git source code and forum archives. Hopefully my questions won't be too annoying. I'm always happy to receive answers in the form of pointers to documentation I should be reading before wasting the groups time. Here's my first pass. 1) I can't find any thing that documents the scope of variables and objects. Can I create variables that can be accessed in other files, other threads. 2) My first project will be fairly large hopefully split between many files. Where can I look to see how ChucK code should be broken down and organized. What is a good paradigm for a shared library. 3) Speaking of libraries I would like to bring a lot of existing C++ code into my project. Does dynamic linking actually work. I see vague (old) references to it being made to work again as if it was broken and other references to it just needing documentation which will come "soon." Lacking documentation is there an example library that does it. I can get a long ways with a working example. Working code may be confusing and slow to understand but it is its own most accurate documentation. I've looked at chuck_dll and I think I need to see the interface from the other side to really understand. I'm happy to be a reviewer for "preliminary" draft documentation. 4) The Mac install seems to have installed a single bundled app. How do I use the command line interface? Minor bug when saving an example with "save as."

Hi. I'm new to ChucK and love it so far but I would like to report what I think is a minor bug. I'm on a Mac running OSX 10.8.5. miniAudicle "about" reports: version 1.3.0 (gidora) Copyright (c) Spencer Salazar ChucK: version 1.3.2.0 (chimera) 64-bit Copyright (c) Ge Wang and Perry Cook http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/ Bug report: Note: this is low priority and minor, more in the category of an annoyance. I opened an example then saved it with "save as." Then I edited it then tried to save the changes. A dialog reported the file was read only. I checked the file with info and the file has Read & Write permission. I can overwrite it with "Save As" but Save refuses to save. I suspect that the example was read only and it kept that attribute in some file state variable. If true this is wrong in two ways, first it should have updated the local state to match what it wrote and second it should not depend on historical information. Even if the file was read-only when opened that may have changed. This is a multitasking system and some other task (me in finder for example) might have changed the permissions since the file was opened. I believe the correct behavior would have been to attempt to write the file and check the error status of the write. Best regards and thanks for a wonderful tool. -Steve Morris aka zencuke > >

is 'string' a primitive type?

Hi When I click 'add shred' with the following code: public class A { static string a; } it throws following message: [*unnamed1]:line(3): cannot declare static non-primitive objects (yet)... [*unnamed1]:line(3): ...(hint: declare as ref (@) & initialize outside for now) as if string is non-primitive. And when I follow the suggestion and use a ref public class A { static string @ a; } it throws the following message: [*unnamed1]:line(3): cannot declare references (@) of primitive type 'string'... [*unnamed1]:line(3): ...(primitive types: 'int', 'float', 'time', 'dur') as if string is a primitive type. Is it a code limitation or am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance! Kiran
