feedback loop

Hi chuckers, I've just tried to reproduce something I've done some time ago with guitar pedals : a feedback loop. input -> mixer -> delay -[wet]-> various effects -> back to the mixer `--> dekay -[dry]-> output by controling the amount of feedback on the mixer and the parameters of the effects in the loop you can create funny things. Now, for the ChucK part (not exactly the same, but quite similar) : ---- class MyDelay extends Delay { 1::second => max; } // feedback loop MyDelay d => JCRev r => Gain g => d; d => dac; fun void note() { SawOsc osc => Envelope e => d; 250 => osc.freq; 1 => e.value; e.keyOff(); 200::ms => e.duration => now; } 0.8 => g.gain; 0.2 => r.mix; 200::ms => d.delay; note(); 10::second => now; ---- with these parameters I get a positive feedback: sound is getting louder and louder, clipping and then silence. Using d.last(), I see the samples computed get outside the range [-1;+1] (thus the clipping) and then divert from 0 exponentially. To avoid this, I would like to truncate the sample values so they stay in the interval [-1;+1] : if s > 1 then s = 1, if s < -1 s = -1 I tried to use Dyno as a limiter, but it seems to do something more clever than that. ChucK Runtime Error

Good Morning/Afternooon/Evening! I am writing this e-mail to see if any windows users have come across the same problem I have with miniAudicle at the moment. The problem is whenever I try to add a shred to the VM it just comes up with the "miniAudicle.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message. I've tried changing a few settings (increasing buffer size, putting the log level on "none") but nothing seems to work! Hope someone has come across this problem before and knows what to do, and if you want some more info on the matter feel free to ask, I'd be more than willing to provide if it means i can finally start programming! NetIn and NetOut

Hey all, What's the current state of NetIn and NetOut? Are they deprecated? I tried using NetOut on a recent build of ChucK and received an "undefined type 'netout'" message. I saw a mention of this problem in the mailing lists a while ago but I couldn't find any resolution on the matter. If these functions have been eliminated, have any been added in their place? I just wanted to play around with live streaming and figured "netout" was the way to go. Thanks, Matt

more fun with random old school computer noise

No devices found for compiled API's

Hi there, I am trying to run Chuck on Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit. When no input file is specified the standard "no input files" message appears. When trying to run an example I get the message :"[chuck]: (via rtaudio): no devices found for compiled audio APIs!". I've taken a look at the rtAudio.cpp file but can't make any useful deductions. I definitely do have a sound device and have successfully used portaudio on the same machine - Any help would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Raymond

Hi all, Over the years I have done this for SKINI (Synthesis ToolKit Network Interface), which is a form of slightly extended textified MIDI. A couple of simple examples can be found at: https://ccrma.stanford.edu/workshops/dsp2008/prc/Week1Labs/ChucKModal/ Running the GUIModal script evokes the Tcl/TK wish interpreter, giving you a GUI with sliders and buttons. It pipes the output of that, which is SKINI, into the stdin of chuck running Modal.ck. The StdIn Class is called Skot (deprecated, should be called ConsoleInput), and the substring parser is called PRC (now called StringTokenizer). skinihak.c can read SKINI files with time stamps and dole them out (flushing it's stdout) to be piped into a SKINI-reading chuck program. So skinihak spain.ski | chuck Modal.ck will play that scorefile. In the directory I pointed you to, skinihak is Linux, skinihakMac is PowerPC, you can build what you like 'cause the source is there. For IntelMac SnowLeopard, without Rosetta, you can build one that works using something like: gcc -m32 -o skinihakMacIntel skinihak.c Enjoy!!! PRC

Chuck Latency

I'm working on a project that requires low latency peak detection. But I'm struggling with the low-latency part. I'm not sure if there's just a problem with chuck, my code, or if my computer is slow. I'm on an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz processor. The following code illustrates the problem: time chrono; Impulse i => dac; adc => Gain g => OnePole p => blackhole; adc => g; 3 => g.op; .9999 => p.pole; now => time start; 10::samp => dur peakPollRate; //ADJUST THIS .001 => float threshold; spork ~makeImpulses(); while (1) { if (p.last() > threshold) { <<< "peak at", (now - chrono) /ms >>>; .2::second => now; } peakPollRate => now; } fun void makeImpulses() { while (true) { 1 => i.next; .8::second => now; <<< "Impulse at ", (now - start) / ms >>>; } } This code uses an impulse as a metronome and listens to the adc through a OnePole filter for peaks above a threshold. Here's two ways to demonstrate the problem (you'll need speakers and a mic): 1. With headphones in, adjust the threshold as low as possible without picking up room noise (under //ADJUST THIS) then run the code. Make a percussive sound into your mic that coincides with one of the impulses, then kill chuck and look at the output. On my machine, it detects the peak ~200ms after the metronome, even though I made the sound immediately when I heard the metronome. 2. With speakers on, adjust the threshold and your speaker volume so that the Impulses are detected as peaks, but no room noise is. Run the program for a few clicks and kill it, then look at the output. On my machine, again, I get a ~200ms delay. Do other people have this same problem? Why is this happening?

MIDI Synthesizer

Hi ! I'm currently having some fun with ChucK and my keyboard, and thought it would be nice to share my little experiments. It's a polyphonic synthesizer class that can easily be overridden. Here is an example: Gain g => dac; // we create the synthesizer Synth synth; // connect all its voices to the gain synth.connect(g); // set the device number 0 => int device; // start the synth synth.start(device); // and that's all. while(true) day => now; There, you have a basic synthesizer with some SinOscs that you can control with your little MIDI keyboard (or a virtual keyboard connected with jack, that's your business). There is 20 voices by default, which means you can press 20 keys at the same time (if you want to use your toes, for example). Now, you want to add a vibrato and a tremolo, and you want to control them with a potentiometer or a cursor. No problem ! First, get the identifier of the controls on your MIDI controller (with the mididump.ck script, for instance). Gain g => dac; Synth synth; // The default synth contains 3 lfos (low frequency oscillators), but you // can do what you want with it.
