Fellow ChucKists, Yesterday I wanted to wish Dan a happy birthday on FaceBook, hoping for many more years of fun with strings and code but thought it'd be nicer to write this in ChucK. Then stuff happened and I was too late. Belated but no less sincere; emulating strings in LiSa... because we can, and because LiSa can (LiSa can actually do anything, she's just modest). We start out with a very literal implementation of Karplus-Strong at concert A4 tuning. Then we start mucking with various parameters in ways that are less traditionally Karplus-Strong for some more interesting tembral effects. Yours, Kas. /* Do copy, do share. Latency measurement for ChucK

Hello All, I am new to ChucK but I've found it is very interesting and intuitive tool! I am interested in Latency issues of audio host. I've measured latencies on various hosts on standard Mac hardware (with on-board Intel HDA standard soundcard) with WindowsXP/MacOSx/Linux etc. So far linux has lowest overhead processing latency and also consistent as good as Mac or even better. I've tested ChucK on Mac OSX. The code I used is standard ADC one (http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/doc/examples/basic/adc.ck) Buffer setting -> measured latency 16 samples -> 5ms 256 samples -> 20ms 512 samples -> 37ms In the console log messages, it always says: number of buffers 8. At sampling frequency of 44100Hz, so in theory: latency = (1/fs)*buffersize*8 16 samples -> 2.9 ms 256 samples -> 46.4 ms 512 samples -> 92.9 ms These two group of data doesn't seem consistent. I guess the buffer structure in ChucK is quite different with other audio hosts (normally they have both input buffer and output buffer). I am not quite understand the maths, can anyone give me some clue? How are the 8 buffers in ChucK arranged? I guess some buffers are in parallel otherwise the theoretical values wont be greater then measured values? I will try to test it on Linux/Jack soon that may be more consistent in terms of latency. Hi there. I'm currently working on a chuck project that is progressively increasing in size. Some parts of this project are already quite generic, and I will probably use them in other projects later (namely, an interface to communicate with the novation's monome ripoff). So I start to wonder: how can I organize my code for easy reuse ? What are the options / good practices to write less monolithic chuck code ? Hi fellow chuckers. this is my first contribution to the community - Hopefully some of you will find it useful / fun. http://github.com/jiyunatori/chuck launchpad.ck defines a class to interact with the Novation Launchpad controller. Right now it is far from complete, but the most important stuff is working: listening to press/release events, and controlling the LEDs. mluck.ck is a very basic clone of the excellent mlr app for the monome (http://docs.monome.org/doku.php?id=app:mlr), adapted to the launchpad. What it is doing: - play 8 pre-recorded loops in parallel (one per line) - jump around each loop with the main grid buttons - play/stop each loop with the scene buttons Feedbacks are welcomed ! enjoy Tom

good ev'ning everyone, some time ago I showed ChucK to my girlfriend and she has been quite enthusiastic about it since then. So thanks for providing this interpreter! Well, right now she's coding a automatic composition tool(in python), which generates some (midi) numbers and prints them on the screen. Since this will be an any-time algorithm, the (actually quite simple) task for the audible back-end - which (she insists) should be written in ChucK - is to read the numbers from standard input and generate matching sounds. So the use-case would look like this: > ./compose | chuck play_composition.ck RTFM and RTFS got me to ConsoleInput and FileIO with the second not being able to connect to stdin. At the moment the only - quite hacked - way (AFAICS) to read /anything/ from stdin looks like this: <<< ConsoleInput in; while(true){ in.prompt(); line= in.getLine(); ... } >>> This doesn't realize EOFs, but keeps waiting, does it? And since FileIO provides a readInt() function, it would be nice to use it in this case... Is there a way, to read from stdin through some IO-Interface of ChucK or anything else 'official' - aka not stating in the source that it's just something hacked? If not, are there any ideas on implementing this in Version 1.2.1.4 ? Well, that's for now, regards, v4hn

Filters blowing up: any news?

At the end of November last year I posted to the list about a problem experiencing where chucks filters (lp, bpf etc) 'blow up' under certain conditions. Here's the archived post: https://lists.cs.princeton.edu/pipermail/chuck-users/2009-November/005045.h… I wondered if anyone has made any progress with finding a solution and/or figuring out exactly what was causing this. In a couple of months I'll be performing with a synthesis environment that I was part way through creating in ChucK before I ran into the filter bug. I'm hoping that I don't have to switch back to max/msp to go further (i much prefer the chuck environment), so I thought i'd give this one more bump on the list to see if there may be a fix in SCM, or otherwise in the pipeline somehow. If anyone is able to fix this I'd be extremely grateful!

bug in miniAudicle?

Hi, I ran into a strange issue with miniAudicle on Mac during the ChucK workshop given by Kassen at the LAC. It turns out that the block comment is not working in the way it works on Linux. The bug seems to be that a block comment signs /* and */ need semicolons behind them to actually work. Leave them out and the Virtual Machine returns a syntax error. Emptying two arrays with the same object causes "failed assertion `m_ref_count > 0'"

Flush ChucK IO

Hi All, I am trying to make a visualization program for ChucK programs. For the communication between ChucK and the C++ code I'm writing, I use a pipe. I'd rather use a socket but I cannot see how this works in ChucK (?). When I write to chout I need to flush the buffer, just to read in the output using my own program. When I try to do this (i.e. my_IO_object.flush()) I get the following message: "(IO): internal error! inside an abstract function! help! note: please hunt down someone (e.g., Ge) to fix this..." The command I use is: chuck-1.2.1.3-exe\bin\chuck.exe chuckVis\chuckFiles\random1.ck, on Windows Vista 32-bits. Without the .flush() the script works fine, but I need the flush functionality. Has anybody got a clue how to fix this? Or maybe how to use ChucK to send messages through a socket? Greetings, Tom Aizenberg

PItShift and SndBuff .rate = Scrubbing?

Hi, Sorry I didn't see the obvious... But I still wanted to know if I'm on the right track: I would use: # .rate - ( float , READ/WRITE ) - set/get playback rate ( relative to file's natural speed ) To "get" the playback rate (I'm guessing it some kind of ratio???) I would then use that info to pitch shift the sound file using PitShift. Am I on the right track? B.

Audio Scrubbing???

Hi, I don't think "audio scrubbing" is the correct technical term for what I want to do... Maybe someone can suggest a better term? Here's what I want to do: I want to be able to move through a sound file along the time (or sample) "axis" while maintaining the pitch of the original. Here's how I think I would do it: The rate at which I am "scrubbing" through the sound file (using a wacom tablet for example) would be mySampleRate. I would then pitch shift by a factor of: originalSampleRate/mySampleRate Of course the devil is in the details... If anyone has a link to math or code that could help me that would be great... Or better yet, maybe Chuck has some UGens that can make this easier... B

Great responses, all very encouraging and exciting! So I installed chuck on my Windows desktop in the form of MiniAudicle and have been running the examples. All seems good apart from one issue which I had a feeling would crop up, latency. The lowest I can set the buffer size to with it still working is 64. I have a Saffire LE sound card which should be pretty good but the latency in Chuck is too great for it to be useful in a live context. So I have a few more questions: - Should I be using Linux? Is the latency better in Linux then in Windows? If so what flavour of Linux would people recommend. - Should I be trying to build chuck for ASIO, I have seen some builds for this in the forums, but not for the latest version. - Are there any other tips or tricks for reducing the latency? Hey Chuck Users, I'm a computer programmer, guitarist and singer who lives in London. Recently I have moved away from pure acoustic performances and have been using boss loop pedal and effects in gigs which has been fantastic but I'm already finding limitations. Then I had the idea that I might be able merge my programming skills with my music and program my own loop pedal rig using ChuCK software and a midi foot controller. It would be able to loop my guitar and voice multiple times live (like traditional loop pedals), turn loops on and off, and also apply real time manipulation, ping pong delays, pitch shifting, algorithmic harmonizations and who knows what else. I would control this all with a midi foot controller and a laptop while I play and sing. I was wondering if anyone has tried doing this type of thing before? A lot of what I have read seams to be more about virtual synthesis rather than real time audio manipulation/looping in a live performance? Is this something ChuCK could do well? What about performance, stability, or latency? I'm going to download ChuCK and play around to try and find these answers myself soon but any useful pointers and suggestions would be most appreciated. Hello Love the idea of ChucK and computer aided composition (call it what you will) is intriguing. I am new to this area and I'd love to hear/see anything that's being produced by ChucK users. I don't mean a page of code that produces one noise but full pieces of music/sound design etc.... A group of people produced a CD using Supercollider which worked well and was inspiring. Is there anything out there like this? I've looked through the tutorials/examples and there are a few things in there but would like to hear things produced by users? Cheers James

osx vs. chuck vs. jackrouter

Hi chuckers (chuckists?)... anyone out there with experience in the combination outlined in the subject line? ChucK is not really happy running on top of jack - under osx using jackrouter, see link below. The best we could do with Michael this afternoon (cc'ed) is to get chuck running with 2 output channels and that took some parameter tweaking. Selecting more channels would make chuck die with an error message (this is from the command line, sorry, I don't have the messages, Michael: could you post them and the command line arguments we used?) In case somebody wants to test: http://www.jackosx.com/ (we used version 0.86 which has support for netjack netone which is what we would be most interested in using). Is ChucK still developped ?

Hi there. I'm currently making a small app using ChucK, and I find this language marvelous - truly, I find it much easier to get things done with ChucK than with SuperCollider. But at the same time, it's pretty obvious that the language still have a few caveats, stuff that is not implemented yet. Looking at the dev list, I can see there isn't much activity around this project anymore. So, is the project dying ? T
