ugens of type 'DAC' have no input

The following error keeps popping up (seemingly randomly) when launching shreds in mini-Audicle (0.2.0 gidora) "ugens of type 'DAC' have no input" This seems absurd that the DAC can't accept input. It is happening on multiple MacBooks (2.13 GHz intel Core 2 Duo. OS X 10.5.8) with different shreds. I can launch the programs from Terminal, but some of them don't function correctly in that environment (particularly things dealing with the tilt-sensor). GenX subclasses not assigning properly (using @=>)

I've got this public class that goes like this: Phasor p => GenX g => env; with the assumption that I can just do a Gen9 gen @=> myObject.g; and have it all work out. However, this doesn't seem to be working. I do this: Gen9 gen; [1.0, 0.6, 0.3, 1.75, 0.1, 0.1] => gen.coefs; gen @=> s[i].g; and it gives me no sound, but if I change the GenX in the public class to Gen9 then it works. I've seen this work before with other things, so what am I doing wrong here? I'm not getting any compiler errors or warnings, either. I'm wondering if maybe it's calling some kind of earlier method, and not a more specific one. I've tried doing .lookup(int) on the Gen9 and it totally works, and when I do <<< s[i].g.toString() >>> it gives me "Gen9:1777af20" : (string). Sound just doesn't work though. Anyway, any help is appreciated here--I'm totally stuck on this one. Andrew

FileIO.read( int ) -- why not implement?

Hey list, it's been a while. I've got this quick little script for reading in Scala files, and there's a particularly important part of it that goes like this: if (scale.more() && scale.read(1) == "/") { if (scale.more()) { scale.readInt(1) => den; } } Basically, I'm just reading in from the file (FileIO scale) to see if the next character is a slash. If so, it's a ratio and I assume that the next number is the denominator. However, I had to go in and un-comment the whole FileIO.read(int) section in the source code. I haven't had any problems with it and can't figure out why it was commented out. It seems so useful to just read a particular number of characters, but this workaround means that I can't share my code with anyone else very easily. Also, we had that wish list going and no one ever said (at least not that I saw) "regular expressions." But, seriously, that would be so helpful for parsing outside information. And I think you all know how much fun it is to pump random outside data through algorithms. I don't exactly see how the FileIO thing is particularly useful unless there's some way of parsing the data. What have you all come up with? Is anyone using FileIO? What about a Floss addition? Please note that this technique is squarely in the "powertools can maim" category; it's very powerful, getting around some of ChucK's limitations but it runs right next to the edge of where the VM will crash because of the casting. pulse width modulation

I'm trying to model the following in ChucK "OSC1, OSC2, and an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) Modulation: OSC1 produces a simple square wave tone, the pulsewidth of which is modulated with OSC2, and then amplitude modulated with the LFO oscillator." I think I understand the LFO amplitude modulation part, but I don't understand what pulse width modulation with osc2 means. Difference between .freq and .sfreq

Probably a noob question, but I'm not sure of the difference between these two parameters. I see from the documentation that one is "phase-matched" and the other is not, but after messing around a bit I've been unable to come up with a scenario in which behaviour differs when using one or the other. If you predict that it gets a compiler error when it encounters the typo, well, you'd be wrong there as well. What happens instead is that it compiles without any error messages, and the result is: "I am legacy." : (string) "I am generic." : (string) It took me a LONG time to find this one (and an even longer time to boil it down to a succinct example). accessing static methods through an instance?

[Coincidentally, Stefan's message about identically named (instance) methods arrived as I was composing this note. It's possible this is the same thing, but with a different twist...] One might expect that an instance reference calls an instance method and a class reference calls a static method even if they have the same name, but it ain't so. And the compiler doesn't issue any warning. Consider the following: ==== file: fn.ck public class F { fun static void method() { <<< "static method()" >>>; } fun void method() { <<< "instance method()" >>>; } } F.method(); // call method via class (new F).method(); // call method via instance ==== produces: "static method()" : (string) "static method()" : (string) ==== I can convince myself that this isn't really a bug, if "static" really means "make this variable or method shared by all instances", but it would be nice if the compiler warned you about identically named methods. (Note that the compiler DOES issue an error for identically named variables.) - Rob

Identical functions

You can declare identical functions, with the first one apparently taking charge: fun void g(int i) { <<< "fddf" >>>; } fun void g(int i) { <<< "fdfd" >>>; } g(3); I have a feeling this is old news, but I can't recall this specific issue being mentioned. It doesn't feel right. It's the same if the functions are inside classes. Could it have something to do with enabling cross-shred referencing? Happy New Year!!! I couldn't resist making my own wish-list: 1) Garbage collection or something like a .destroy() method for UGens so we can create UGens in a loop without worrying about memory. 2) A way to write our own UGens without building them in C++ and compiling the source. 3) Namespaces and an import mechanism beyond Machine.add(). 4) Revival of some of the old ChucK shell plans and more shell development, the shell is one of the coolest things about ChucK IMHO. (BTW- shell crashes the Mini for me, I can only use it on the command line) 5) This has been discussed in depth before but I still think some kind of syntax like: SinOsc m => blackhole; SinOsc c => dac; m => Gain g => c.freq; //this line!!! 440.0 => g.gain; ...might be cool, although it is not very "ChucKian". Right now we can use UGen.op to choose if we want AM or FM but I dont think there is a way to have both without explicitly chucking a value within a time loop :( Correct me if I am wrong about this. 5 b.) A Dc UGen to add offset gain would be nice with the above "syntax" for setting center frequency. 6) I could see some kind of anonymous function thing being pretty powerful. Hello ChucKers, Good idea on having the documentation sprint -- it has sparked my interest in ChucK again. Given the time of year I thought I'd throw out my wish list for new ChucK features/enhancements: 1. Import/include mechanism with namespaces The import.ck mechanism in LiCK works ok, but is hard to maintain. All dependencies between classes have to be calculated manually so that all the Machine.adds are in the right order. Having 136 or however many it is classes in LiCK all in the same namespace (no namespace, or the "default package", that is) is a mess. 2. Java-style interface abstract classes, or multiple class inheritance I need either class Foo {} interface Bar {} interface Baz {} class Qux extends Foo implements Bar, Baz or class Foo {} class Bar {} class Baz {} class Qux extends Foo, Bar, Baz 3. Tool for generating ChucK class documentation from its source code (similar to doxygen or javadoc) 4. A way to soft-kill a shred when in an on-the-fly programming session By soft-kill, I mean kill the shread when it is no longer producing non-zero samples, not just kill it immediately. Using e.g. $ chuck - 1 is not pleasant when that shred is still producing sound. 5. Class/type introspection 6. Closures or function pointers 7. Constructors michael

FLOSS (user editable) manual for ChucK

Hi all. I noticed that there doesn't seem to currently be a user editable version of the ChucK manual online (http://wiki.cs.princeton.edu/index.php/ChucK/Manual this page is the nearest thing i found). While learning things there have been a few cases where I thought small changes to the manual wording would make things clearer (for instance my recent question about how Envelope works). I wondered about moving a copy of the ChucK manual to FLOSS Manuals, where it can be edited by users. http://en.flossmanuals.net/flossmanuals. I used this site in a recent Ardour booksprint I took part in. It's not perfect (sometimes navigation is a little unintuitive), but works well. It uses version history (different versions can be compared too). A user is appointed as a maintainers of a particular manual. Chapters can be edited by anyone with a FLOSS account, but maintainers get to decide when new versions of chapters are 'published' (made visible in the canonical version of the FLOSS manual, the one that guest visitors to the FLOSS manuals site will see) http://en.flossmanuals.net/FLOSSManuals/Maintainers . A few preliminary questions about the idea: @Ge: would you be okay with the current manual being copied to another site, and edited? (i couldn't find license details on the current manual). What do people think of this idea in general? Would people use it? Would it greatly confuse matters to have one more url for ChucK documentation? (any other issues?)

what is the process for suggesting improvements for the manual?

I haven't found anything that "officially" describes how to suggest changes to the manual. I've spotted a few things that I think should be fixed, or at least discussed. At least one of them is an actual error, while others are suggestions for how certain sections might be improved. Having said that, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the manual. It looks very useful, and seems to be off to a great start. andy

How can I cast a duration into a string (e.g. for passing as a string argument)?
