Hello all- I have been doing some granular synthesis in ChucK and I am trying to create overlapping grains without having resort to arrays of Ugens or similar methods to create polyphony. Although I have seen this technique used often, the following seems to eat up memory rather quickly (due to continuously sporking the SndBuf no doubt). //BEGIN CODE --> //use your own file here... The ability release unreferenced Ugens would facilitate the easy polyphony one gets when using Csound and really make ChucK awesomer (fingers crossed). Thanks ahead of time for any input. Kurt

Hello all-First of all, I love ChucK shell!!! But I wondered if there are any plans for ChucK shell improvements in the works? It would be nice to have some normal shell type stuff... Tab-completion, command line history (it would be sweet to 'up-arrow', then 'enter key' to keep adding the same shred), the ability to change directories (or at least the ../../ syntax would be nice, cause, as it stands, one has to use absolute path names for files not in the working directory), and to move the cursor with the arrow keys to edit commands. Also it might be cool if when querying active shreds (the '^' command) it would be cool if the child shreds were indented a level from the parent shreds. It would be nice if you could add and remove shreds by name (eg. all shreds named "foo.ck" could be removed by some command like '-! foo", i dunno?). I feel kinda lame asking about this stuff, but I figured if some awesome ChucK dev out there was thinking about spiffying up the shell for the next ChucK release they might be stoked to know someone out there was exited about potential improvements. thanks. Static data problem (arrays, floats)

Hey list, Basically, I want a static function that holds a tuning map in it (sort of an alternative to mtof). This (issue 1): float tuning_map[128]; Gives me: [Rational_io.ck]:line(45): non-static member 'tuning_map' used from static function... [Rational_io.ck]: ...in function 'read' and this (issue 2): static float tuning_map[128]; gives me: [Rational_io.ck]:line(16): cannot declare static non-primitive objects (yet)... [Rational_io.ck]:line(16): ...(hint: declare as ref (@) & initialize outside for now) and this (issue 3): static float @ tuning_map[128]; gives me: [Rational_io.ck]:line(16): cannot declare references (@) of primitive type 'float'... [Rational_io.ck]:line(16): ...(primitive types: 'int', 'float', 'time', 'dur') So, I'm just at an impasse. I can't figure out how to do this, because it won't let me declare things. To get around issue 2 in an earlier segment, I did: static FileIO @ tuning; new FileIO @=> tuning; which worked perfectly (tests well, too). But I can't do it with my float array because of issue 3. Any solutions? Andrew

Kill Yr Tunings (Rational + Tonality classes)

Hey, I've got a prototype here for a couple of classes to make something similar to SC's Tuning / Scale classes. I've attached the two class files (Rational_io.ck and Tonality_io.ck, which extends Rational) and one test file (iotest.ck). The key is that you have to have the new CVS installed and running properly (FileIO and Arrays--standard miniAudicle build won't work), and you have to drop the files partch.rational and otonal1.tonality in the same directory that you ChucK from. Rational is a static class, so that it can be changed or shifted by an external shred OTF if needed, but Tonality is not static. The idea behind this is so that I could have different channels playing different tonalities, so that there could be shifts in the tonality structure within a particular tuning. I'm using Partch's for now, but I'd like to develop my own 80-something ratio tuning to select from. For now, otonal1.tonality contains a nice mixture of 7s and 5s and 3s with one 11 in there. It has no relation to Partch's first Otonality, because I wanted to keep it wrapping at the keyboard "octave." Also, in case you're confused "Diaspon" is the Greek notation for the 2/1 interval, and seems to be more accurate than the loaded "octave," while still managing to convey the ratio in words. I'm completely open to more suggestions. This has been a long-term thought and a very short-term development period, so there's got to be more stuff to implement. Particularly, I envision experimental keyboards controlling ChucK over OSC in 8-channel surround sound with electric guitars and a full chorus and brass band (Plork want in on this?). Netlabel Releases ChucK Program

We got like 200 downloads on the Boolean Sequencing album that I created using an automatic song generator created with ChucK, so we decided to release the software on the EDP netlabel. In just a few days there have been 12 downloads (not much I know), so there might be close to 12 new ChucK users running the code. ChucK compilation error (still, again?) -- similar to the Ubuntu GCC 4.3 problem

Hey all, So, I just upgraded to Snow Leopard (anyone else? I feel like the list's guinea pig here) and now I'm getting awful compilation errors. "gcc" gives me 4.2.1, as does g++, so it's not the exact same as the 4.3 problem from the forum. Fellow ChucKists, I made a start adding the open bugs here http://wiki.cs.princeton.edu/index.php/ChucK/Bugs/Release I added these from memory and by searching the list archives, there are likely more. I'm sure the DEV's also have their own list but I feel a open list, accessible to both the developers and to bug hunters will help clear up what are known issues to users as well as help create a "to do list".
