Dear list, Right now I'm having lots of fun with the Moog UGen, but when we mistakenly give it parameters out of range then the resulting error message is incorrect and potentially confusing; consider; Moog bob; 1.1 => bob.filterQ; this will give us; [chuck](via STK): Moog: Control value greater than 128.0! Are array types really classes ?

Hi list, I am currently learning Chuck, so I this may sound like a silly question. The language specification states that arrays are objects, but I can't find the proper syntax to declare a class that extends an array type. Since, as far as I understood, float[] is a reference to an array of floats, I was not really surprised that Chuck does not accept "class foo extends float[]", but what would the proper syntax be, if that is possible at all ? chuck and jack

Hello, I'm using chuck under linux with jack audio server. Although it is working generally fine, sometimes I get unexpected clicks with error messages in the jack window and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong. I suspect that it is a problem with how linux handles interrupts in real time. The reason I'm posting here is that I think that the cause might be that I'm often printing on the terminal with <<< >>>; and that, I think demands an interrupt. Because the request comes from chuck which is granted real time priority by jack, it might interrupt the audio and at some points I get these clicks. Does this make sense? Has anyone encountered a similar problem with chuck and jack? In this case, has anyone used any alternative way of getting feedback from chuck? Maybe, instead of formatting a string and printing on a terminal, send a string through osc to some other interface which would update a constantly displayed message or variable which might be less demanding and not real time priority? Any ideas of what this could be? That is similar to another problem I have encountered so far, many times I would like to keep an eye to various parameters, both current values and how they change over time, but printing the value on the terminal only when it changes is not enough. Full path with drive letters?

Hello, I'm using chuck in windows (7 RC) and I'm seeing something quite odd... When I execute something like: E:\tools\chuck-1.2.1.2-exe\bin>chuck.exe "e:\tools\OSCSurface\ osc_surface_example.ck" I get this as a result: [e]: no such file or directory So, either Chuck doesn't know drive letters, or Windows 7 is doing something odd. Can anyone confirm? Note that this: E:\tools\chuck-1.2.1.2-exe\bin>chuck.exe "\tools\OSCSurface\ osc_surface_example.ck" Works fine, but I'm giving OSCSurface a try and that's not the way it likes to work... Kassen, I didn't tune the chime, ran out of time. Maybe I can work on it this week. We has SO MUCH FUN on the game show last week that now I've decided to do another game show next week. In addition to the main theme of "name that tune" and the secondary theme of "the gong show", I think I'll add a choice of "door number one, door number two, and door number three". Should be a great time as everyone enjoyed it last week. There will of course be plenty of ChucK from various artists on the game show. Les

Using UGen as a function arg

Hey everyone, I just found out that you could use more specific classes as function arguments (I know, a little slow). So, I've got: fun void modulator (UGen a, DelayL b) ... while(1) { a.last()::ms => b.delay; 1::samp => now; } and it totally works! Here's the catch: is there a way to make something like this that will work for more general classes? I mean, why don't DelayL and DelayA and Delay all inherit from some more general class that uses a dummy "delay" and "max" argument, so that we can build some awesome functions that have universal applications? There could be an oscillator class to encompass everything with a freq, phase, and sync attribute, and so many others that would make modulating so much easier. I expect there to be a totally reasonable answer, because I don't really know much about programming at all, but this seems like it would make sense. Or, is there a way to do what I want to do (build more general modulation functions) within the existing framework? I'd ideally like something that can spork a shred to modulate a random parameter, then fade out at the end, so that it's like the signal is receiving random interference that makes it ring mod or something. I can probably figure out how to do it with millions of lines of code, but the more work it is the less likely it is that I'll finish it. Thanks everyone. Andrew

NYC-Based ChucKists: "Cloud Seeding" Sept. 1st @ The Stone, 8pm

Hello, If any of you are in or will be in the New York City area this coming Tuesday, I'm playing an hour-long set at a place called The Stone that will be all about Granular Synthesis / Resynthesis in a performance setting. If you'll be in the area, it will be a cool show to see--everything is written in ChucK. I'm planning on doing a quasi-participatory didactic thing with the audience to teach them about granular synthesis as I demonstrate the instruments I've built, so it's a little non-traditional as far as concert flow. Even if you won't be in the area, you might want to take a look through my (spaghetti) code. As Kassen can tell you, my attempts at doing granular synthesis in ChucK border on obsession and have spent a long time trying to squeeze out as much performance while keeping it as easy to program as possible. For this show, I've built instruments that take their spectral profiles from small audio files that I've run through the Spear program for analysis (http://www.klingbeil.com/spear/). Spear does "Sinusoidal Partial Editing Analysis and Resynthesis" and does a really good job at FFT analysis with transient sharpening and all kinds of other goodies. Spear outputs its information as a text file and I'm using the file IO routines that are currently only in the bleeding-edge CVS version of ChucK to parse these files into reasonably useful datasets. Then I'm using standard HID stuff and a modified gamepad for interaction. It's far from perfect, but it's a playable prototype. I'll have this stuff organized and posted on my website and github by the show date (hopefully). I'd really love to get some feedback on the code for the future. Plus, if anyone is interested in getting a head start parsing Spear files with ChucK, this might be helpful. analysis examples

Dear Ge & Rebecca, The previous version of ChucK had a /examples/analysis/tracking directory with a great example called "tracking.ck" in it. In the latest download that's gone. It's not so clear to me why that example should be gone because that happened to be the one that makes it clear how the numbers in the array that FFT yields relate to frequencies in the most clear way. On top of that it's fun and practical. As interesting as the examples with the current release might be they don't really make it clear what they are trying to accomplish and how. They run... they computate some numbers and print them but it's not explained what those numbers represent or why we would be interested in them. Because of a recent question on the forum about pitch tracking/detection I dug up the old example to post as a explanation and had to wonder about the how and why of the current range of examples. Much of it is quite baffeling to me; I'd be hard pressed to explain what goes on in the fft examples and the feedback they use. The code of the tracking one may be far longer and more involved but it's purpose is clear, it invites "poking around" and so I think it makes for a practically educational example to include.
