Hi Øyvind Hvamstad, There is a file called cksum32.uc that comes with the IXP Workbench(Microcode\examples\cksum32.uc). It contains code for verifying IP checksum but you can easily modify it according to your need. Altering a packet in memory

Hi, I have some doubts on how to alter a packet in memory. What I basically want to do is UDP forwarding. I have to change the destination ip and port. I will also have to change the mac addresses and calculate some checksums. I have been reading the L3Fwd code and also the microcode programmers reference guide, but I still have some, potentially stupid, questions: Say I want to alter the IP address and do something like this: sdram[write, $$hdr0, ip_hdr_base, dst_ip_offset, 1] Will this write 64 bits from $$hdr0 to ip_hdr_base + dst_ip_offset in sdram? Then, must I ensure that the 32 first bits of $$hdr0 is the new IP and that the 32 next bits are the same as the original? I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. Thanks. He Ricardo, from what I read your problem really isn't IXP specific. To get modules loaded in the first place I suggest you remove the EXTRAVERSION tag. Linux fails to load modules built for other systems, but in most cases 2.4.18 modules can be easily swapped. This is especially true of the pciDg drivers, as they're fairly simple. Simply rebuild them for 2.4.18 (or switch your kernel back to 2.4.17) Second, when the modules have been loaded succesfully try to look at your kernel message log with dmesg for statements regarding failure of network device detection. If nothing comes up you might want to do an ifconfig -a to see if a new device exists. I hope this helps. Hi Øyvind I am unaware of any magic instructions. My main suggestion is to consider alternative buffer representations. If it is common for your application to perform this type of "multicast", a buffer representation that had reference counting capabilities (so you can copy by only increasing the reference count) and non-contiguous data layout (for example, like mbufs so that the multiple owners of packets and modify, say, the packet headers independently while sharing the packet payload) will probably provide the best performance. The downside is integrating a new buffer scheme with the existing SDK, which will require touching several of the SDK components (rx, tx, resource manager). If you don't want to write a new buffer data structure, my only other thought would be to dedicate a microengine to buffer copying. This ME could receive packet (handles) on one queue and return the duplicated handle on another queue. The implementation of the buffer copy could obviously use multiple threads in the ME, but could also include a single thread working on copying multiple packets at once if you need to hide even more memory latency. erik ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Erik J. Hi Willem. Currently I'm trying to set-up five Linux (RedHat 7.2 and 7.3) workstations with ENP-2505 boards, but failed to accomplish the task. (Using the IXA EDU Setup guide 1.01 from Intel).I think the problem is on the pciDg.o and pciDgNet.o modules. Because the only problem I have is regarging loading these modules, as a result I cannot ping between Linux host and board. Linux and W2K can ping between each other. The main problem I have with Linux 7.2 (besides having a hard time to configure the video card, not finished yet either) is that although it seems pciDg.o and pciDgNet.o load correctly, eth1 is not created, I got this message: "SIOCSIFADDR: No such device eth1: unknown interface: no such device." With Linux 7.3 I have tried to recompile the modules following a guide from Laboratory of Advanced Systems Research at UCLA (I think)(http://webdiee.cem.itesm.mx/web2/comunicaciones/proyectos/otraguia.doc) but still I got a message telling me the modules "pciDg.o was compilled for version 2.4.18-4 while this kernel version is 2.4.18-3smp." So, I decided to follow my own re-compilation procedure. This is what I did: cd /usr/src/linux edit the Makefile and change the EXTRAVERSION=-4 make mrproper make oldconfig cd /mnt/cdrom/ENP-2505_Driver rpm -recompile boot_drv-2.0-1.src.rpm cd /usr/src/linux make clean make zImage To big, so I change to make bzImage make modules make modules_install cp /arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-4 I modified the grub.conf file to add the new kernel reboot uname -r and I got 2.4.18-4 cd /opt/ixasdk/enp-2505/bin insmod pciDg.o pciDg.o was compiled for kernel ersion 2.4.17 while this kernel is version 2.4.18-4 Hope you or somebody can help me. [WORKING] booting over PCI (ENP boards) from a 2.6 kernel installation

Hi, this is just a short message for people running Linux on an IXP board that connects to the host over PCI. As you probably know, most support applications are currently restricted to linux 2.4 kernels. For one of our projects I'm in the process of writing an alternate PciDg driver that will also work with newer (2.6) kernels. At the moment we are able to (1) map both ENP and EB memory over PCI to kernel- and userspace on the host. (2) boot the ENP boards over PCI using Radisys' or Intel's bvloadapp utility while relying on our own GPLed mmapping module instead of PciDg. Note that pseudo-ethernet is not working yet. However, if you simply want to get the board up and running that's not an issue. Please let me know if you're interested in an updated pseudo-ethernet driver, I may consider investing time in it then. Besdides the IXA EDU workstation manual, I used two documents more to set up the workstation, the one that help me to fix the problem I refer to, can be downloaded at: http://webdiee.cem.itesm.mx/web2/comunicaciones/proyectos/otraguia.doc This guide includes a patch for the Linux host that solved the problem.
