Hi, Based on the example of Fast Port usage of the book programming IXP1200 (intel press), I made the following observation. (If familiar please respond). The example uses sop_seq field from rcv_ctl register in order to put the MPKTs of a PACKET in the correct order. However, in general, using the sop_seq allows for only 16 different MPKTS. That is, the number rolls over after 0xF. A 1500bytes PACKET results in 24 MPKTS. If more than one thread handle these MPKTS in parallel, there is a possibility for two threads to receive the same sop_seq. Another relative issue is the next one : In the book it is written that the sop_seq field of rcv_cntl register, follows the values of the sop_seq register. This is wrong. The sop_seq register changes only when an SOP-MPKT is received, while the sop_seq field in rcv_cntl register behaves as described in the book. (Always increases, and get the sop_seq value when a SOP-MPKT is received). To support this behavior there are two counters (documented in hardware reference manual) Now the question is this : If a thread, after the ctx_wait(start_receive) executes two back-to-back csr_reads : csr_read(sop_seq, sync_none); csr_read(rcv_cntl, ctx_wait); will end up having two sop_seq: The value of the register and the field of rcv_cntl. Will the value of the register be the sop-seq number that was assigned to the PACKET that this thread is working for ? I think the answer is "no necessarily"! I saw another variant of this problem (reported by Francis Chang for the the example in Chapter 5 of the IXP book). The compiler seems to want to use GPR a0 to store both a pointer into scratch memory, as well as function return address. The problem is not in the compiler, the problem is that an absolute register is not allowed with either a shift specifier (alu_shf) or an immediate operand. So the real problem is with the 1. Optimization

Hi Francis, I have had the same problem as you..when optimized for size or speed there are no errors but when the program is made to run without any optimization it gives some error. Is there any way to remove these errors? Please let me know. Thanks, vaish.

Booting ENP-2505 IXP1200 Board

All, I am trying to boot the IXP1200 board but I simply can not do it, since the 'bootixp' script calls minicom program and then it gets stuck. Wrong results in Workbench

Hi all, have problem running the l3fwdr app in workbench mode. The board kept dumping packats to all 4 of its ports and cause the host linux box to crash soon after. This could be because the PATH environment variable is not set properly. The uccl.exe is in the C:\IXP1200\bin directory (or in the bin directory of the IXP1200 install). You would need to make sure that the PATH environment variable (found in My Computer - Properties - Advanced - Environment Variables) includes this value. If there is a PATH in both the System and User variables, make sure both have this directory. I got the same error message that you are seeing and doing this fixed it. rcv_rdy_lo with workbench vs without

Hello all, I've been having trouble using the workbench to run the ingress interface aces (of the SDK) while debugging. I can successfully run the various tutorials and the L3 forwarding ace without debugging them by using the ixstart scripts with mode = 0. When I use mode = 1 and use the workbench to debug, the microaces run as if no packets were being received. Inspection of the code (and some added debugging routines) show that when the workbench is not running, incoming data on ports 0-3 are reflected in bits 0-3 of the rcv_rdy_lo CSR. However, if I use the workbench to upload the code and run it, bits 8-11 of rcv_rdy_lo reflect the activity on ports 0-3. This of course prevents packets from being received [the code looks at ((rcv_rdy_lo >> port_num) & 1) for activity]. I'm pretty sure all the variables/symbols are being patched correctly. Does anybody have any ideas what could cause this discrepancy? I'm using an ENP-2505 board with 4 100Mb ports. Thanks for any help. -Michael Burns UCLA LASR

It uses a mini-kernel that acts as a bridge between an external processor such as a Pentium and the micoengines, similar to something described in section 2.7.1 in Intel Hardware Reference Manual, Dec 2001, Page 31. There is a need to erase the Intel firmware first before using Vera. StrongARM and Microengine codes are compiled into Motorola Hex Format files on Pentium and are then downloaded via the PCI bus onto IXP1200. Princeton also provide the necessary toolchains to compile StrongARM and microengine codes so there is no need to use the Developer Workbench to download the microengine codes as Micro Object files onto IXP1200. regards, cheewei

L3Fwd16 question

Hi, I am not very good in reading the microcode, and would appreciate very much if someone could help me out here! I have been trying to get the peth driver to run on the monta vista 2.4.18 kernel. So far, I think I have ported and run the control-plane apps and libraies without any problem. (octmac.o, giga_drv.o, ue.o, rs_udebug, rtmapp, and peth.o). However, I am not sure what to do with the microcode on the data plane side. It appears that the main difference between 2.3.99 and 2.4.18 kernel is that they occupy different SDRAM location. So I made the modification to the MV kernel by: 1. Reserve 0xC600000 - 0xC8000000 for data-plane use 2. Map 0xC6000000 - 0xC8000000 to the IO mem 0xD8000000 - 0xDA000000 I thought if I redefine the following: #define SDRAM_NONCACHE_QWD_START 0xC00100 // 96MB #define SDRAM_NONCACHE_QWD_END 0x400000 // 32MB in the mem_map.h file of L3Fwd16, then the microcode should work fine. Apparently, it seems that the RTM works, and the peth poller thread receives packets from the microcode, but the packet content is not correct. So the xmit and recv are not working... Is there something else I should change in the mircocode too?? The reason for my last question is that I want to run and test some microcode on the ixp1200 without the rest of the ACE environment. I would also like to have the option of not using ACEs when our code is ready to be put on the IXP1200. To do so I need to get a .uof running on the microengine. Ideally, I'll write and debug in the workbench, then when it comes time to deploy I take the .uof's I got from the workbench and start them with the code I'm trying to write now. Is this direct/ACEless approach possible? Najati

Hi, I'm a new comer of ixp1200. I'm trying to run microengine examples on ixp1200 ethernet evaluation board. I have made linux running on the board with the image from: http://server2024.virtualave.net/soothsayer/ramdisk_img.gz, but when I mounted up the nfs directory from the linux pc, and ran the command: ./ixstart ixsys_count_8_1.config, I got the error message: /lib/modules/ixasl.o: unresolved symbol get_virtual_mem_map ... I can not even manually insmod the module ixasl.o due to the same reason. Can anyone give me some suggestion on this? Do I need to download better "ixasl.o"? OK, thanks! The kernel that you have does not support SDK 2.0. The ethernet evaluation system is not supported by SDK 2.0. The ethernet eval system is supported by SDK 1.3. I'm trying to run microengine examples on ixp1200 ethernet evaluation board. I have made linux running on the board with the image from: http://server2024.virtualave.net/soothsayer/ramdisk_img.gz, but when I mounted up the nfs directory from the linux pc, and ran the command: ./ixstart ixsys_count_8_1.config, I got the error message: /lib/modules/ixasl.o: unresolved symbol get_virtual_mem_map ... I can not even manually insmod the module ixasl.o due to the same reason. Can anyone give me some suggestion on this? Do I need to download better "ixasl.o"? OK, thanks!
